Fusion V is way more better than Z, yet Z is not bad. Could even be that I have been stored the bottle unfairly.
Dark red, nice heavy body with nice acid. Worked well with a medium rare steak.

2022 De Toren The Black Lion

Stellenbosch Shiraz, Syrah more

4/3/2024 - Millennial Drinkers wrote: 94 points

Last wine at De Toren and in the Icon Tasting. Made up entirely of Shiraz. Aged in 200% new French oak barrels for 24 months, 12 months and then again for 12 months. Tasting was via coravin.

Deep purplish red. Still a baby, quite savory on the nose with dried meats and wood chips, almost like raw oak. Medium plus tannins (7/10) with a medium plus to full body. This will definitely beef up with time. Tons of blackberries on the palate with a bit of bacon fat, mocha and caramel. Long and lingering finish. Drink from 2028 till 2048. (94+)

Fifth wine at De Toren and in the Icon Tasting. Made up entirely of Malbec. The label is inspired by Kemba, a white rhino De Toren sponsors in Switzerland. Aged in 200% new French oak barrels for 24 months, 12 months and then again for 12 months. Tasting was via coravin.

Deep purplish red. Brown sugar on the attack of the nose followed up by black cherries, violets and maybe lavender. Medium plus tannins (7.5/10) with a medium plus body. Seems that it will beef up with some age. Dark bramble berries on the palate with light blue fruits and purple flowers. Quite dry on the palate with a long finish. Drink from 2028 till 2048. (94+)

Fourth wine at De Toren and now onto the Icon Tasting. Made up of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Aged twice in 100% new French oak barrels for 12 months a piece. Tasting was via coravin.

Deep purplish ruby red. Very tight on the nose with some violets and black currants. After being open for around 20+ min baking spices started to show. Heavy tannins (8.5/10) with a full body. A bit earthy on the attack of the palate followed up by black currants, dark red cherries (even a little sour) and some graphite. Long and lingering finish. Drink from 2030 to 2055. (95+)

Third wine at De Toren. Made up of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec, 14% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot.

Deep ruby red with purplish hues. Black currants on the nose with cherries, baking spices and a hint of cedar. Medium plus tannins (7.5/10) with a medium plus to full body. Well rounded on the palate with black currants, leather and a hint of blueberries in the long finish. Drink till 2040.

Second wine at De Toren. Made up of 54% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot. Aged in a mix of French oak for 12 months with the Malbec being aged in American oak.

Deep ruby red in appearance with garnet starting to show on the edges. Can definitely see this is Merlot dominant with aromas of tomato, plums and some mulled berries. Medium and grippy tannins (6.5/10) with balanced acidity and a medium plus body. Definitely tastes a bit older than a 2018 with a damp forest floor on the palate with a black cherry finish. Long finish. Drink till 2034.

First red wine at De Toren, served slightly chilled. A Bordeaux style blend lead by Malbec. Medium ruby red. Bright red and even a hint of blue fruits on the nose, as it warms up a bit of baking spices shows. Medium tannins (5/10) with a medium minus body. Black cherries and a little earthiness on the palate. Very quaffable with a medium length finish. Drink over the next couple years.

Ruby color. Primary flavors are smoke, tobacco, wet tree bark on a rainy day in the forest, some black fruit. Incredibly complex. Silky tannins, medium + acidity, long finish. I would say not for everyone, but this is an awesome wine for wine lovers.

That was a great bottle (Magnum) and probably my best one until now. The wine needs air (decanted for 1 hr). Dark cherry, cassis, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, dark chocolate and cedar. Tannins left but well integrated. The wine will keep this level for another 5+ years.

Consumed at the winery near Stellenbosch. Decanted from Magnum. This is delicious juice!
Dark, dark purple color; wonderful nose of black fruit.
Layered black and red fruit, with delicious savory notes of leather and cedar pencil in a very bordeaux-style wine. It’s delicious. I’ll buy more when I get home..

This was very surprising to me. It was like a well matured, older Bordeaux with red fruits, leather and some cedar wood. Very smooth and integrated tannins. Perhaps a bit short on the finish. The wine is in its top drinking spot now. The younger Fusion V vintages are pretty much dark fruit driven. Drink it over the next 3 years.

Testing this young ‘female’ Toren Z, a Merlot dominated SA Stellenbosch with Saint-Emillion ambition, Of course too young, but apart from that is does not convince me fully. A.bit too much aroma of warm cooked cherrie fruit prevents me of being enthusiastic.

👀Ruby red and violet rims
👃🏻Ripe cherries, blueberries, brambles, bell pepper, cloves
👅Warm red cherries, prunes, vanilla, dark peppery spices. Silky and smooth, long finish

The Toren V is a rock of comfort to me. This Stellenbosch icon shows a warm Bordeaux style blend that outclasses most (or maybe all) Bordeaux reds with a comparable price-tag.

👃🏻👅Black cherries, blackcurrants, blackberries, earthy and woody. Spices includes eucalyptus, cacao, tobacco, cedarwood, pepper/cloves and graphite. Smooth, rich and warm. The finish is nice and long.
