Compared to the other notes on CT this wine really underperformed and felt a bit tired. Very surprised since it was from Tour D'Argent where the provenance should have been perfect. Very good but not exceptional.

Superb stuff. Opened nicely with time in the decanter. Dark in color. Nice floral nose. Well structured on the palate. Long, long on the finish.

Dinner at Absinthe with my wife. This bottle appears to be slightly advanced. Browning throughout upon pouring, but a lovely matured leather, soui bois, earthy nose, with lots of sour cherries, raspberries and dried roses, and there was a savoury feel to this, with lots of soil and dirt. The palate showed lovely secondary characteristics, with cherries, plums, smoked meat, minerals, soil, truffles and earth. There was lots of intensity, power and richness, with a lovely mineral, saline, sea salt, meaty end to the finish with extended time in the glass. As mentioned at the beginning, this somewhat lacked the freshness and purity of a Rousseau, but I'm not complaining as I think this wine (or bottle) is in an absolutely perfect drinking window. What a lovely CSJ!

Tasted blind, this wine was one of the many highlights a Murray's Bday dinner. It had a light red center and auburn rims. The high- intensity nose showed sour cherries, brown spices, smoked game, and some anise.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great balance and length. It was light bodied but imparted tons of flavor. It was a privilege to experience this rare and truly great wine.

While I would argue this wine was probably a little past its peak, it would still blow most competitors right off the table. Drink up and enjoy!

Still young with a strong core of sour cherry. Great power and endless finish. Has the trademark Rousseau focus and precision. To me not quite ready, but drinkable. Recommend air before drinking. Tried the second and third day it was much more open but still relatively tightly wound.

"1er" Dinner at the American Club to determine which plots belong to a "Grand Cru" status. The sommelier served this as the very first red (out of a total of 8), and what a standard this set. Dark red, with a touch of brown at the rim. The nose was stunning, chambolle like in its floral perfume, red roses and violets. There were lots of wild strawberries, raspberries, jam, with good acidity, a touch of rusticity and soil, with almost perfect balance. The Gevrey profile took some time to emerge, but when it did, it completed the brilliance of this wine. Would any of the remaining 7 wines be able to stand up to this opener? Verdict on Grand Cru worthiness - Definitely, for this amazing plot.

Same bottle as Chablis28. I never wrote a note on this, but after a great 2001 Rousseau Chambertin earlier this week, I thought I should at least document the '99s greatness. This bottle was pure pleasure, and showing much better than my previous tasting in 2009. Soaring nose, lithe and elegant on the palate and packed with flavor. I thought this was every bit as good as the '99 La Tache which is one of my favorites of all time. I suspect I'll never get to try this again, but well stored bottles should drink well for many, many years.

My second go at this beauty (the first was over five years ago). As great as it was then, it is even greater now. The color is a pure red. The nose delivers thrilling aromas of red fruit and spice. Equally great on the palate, with beautiful red fruit and spice and a flawless texture -- the epitome of elegance in a wine. Flavors burst across the palate from the initial attack through the long, lingering (and very satisfying) finish. This is drinking really well now, but should go from strength to strength for many more years now. Thanks so much to Siggy for sharing this beautiful wine!

Ripe and very sweet on the nose. Black fruit, almost prune like. Pure and finessed on the palate, but again, just a bit too sweet. Seemed more aged in appearance than I would have thought.

Morel Dinner with Big Red & White Burgs and Champagne (L'Etoille du Nord, Bayport, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2hr plus. Another OMG moment, incredible nose; perfumed to the hilt, red fruits, sweet fruit, beautifully floral, sandalwood. The palate offers an array of red fruits, pure and longer than long, so persistent, wow, sour fruits, minerals that drive the finish, tangy - amazing acidity. The tannins are fine and ready. Fantastic!!! 95+ to 96pts.

Still quite primary in nature, exhibited an attractive mix of dark fruit, sap, sweet spices, earth, and hints of wood. While balanced it is all a bit too intense and in your face. But I suspect this will age well given the diversity and intensity of flavor. Needs at least 5 years in my opinion

Started out a little slow but picked up speed after one hour. Nice dark fruit on the nose and palate. Dry earth and slightly games notes on the nose translate to a pleasant contrast between light and dark on the palate.

The 2009 Rousseau Clos de la Roche is a very fragrant, pretty wine, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of griotte cherry, strawberry, mustard seed, coco and herb tones. On the palate the wine is sappy and open for inspection, with juicy fruit and just a touch of back-end austerity (hail?) on the lightly tannic, mineral finish. It's hard to prognosticate how this might age, but its heady bouquet is already very alluring.

The colour is showing some maturity: garnet with a touch of brown. On the palate, it is very elegant, smooth and quite full, with attractive raspberry and cherry fruit, some secondary, slightly vegetal, notes and good length. A stylish wine, which is at its peak now.

2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): We were transported to Burg heaven with this last bottle. We had already gone through a fantastic line-up by this point int the evening, so it is really saying something that this was unanimously voted the wine of the night. The Rousseau Chambertin that came may have been amazing, but there was just something a little extra about the Clos de Beze. It had a prettier nose than Chambertin, more feminine, with pure aromas of red cherries and dried flowers and a gentle flush of spice, all traced with a little whiff of toasty oak. Absolutely gorgeous stuff. In the mouth, it was soft and seductive, with velvety tannins and absolutely melting acidity draped over a delicious core of sweet cherries and berries. Perfectly integrated and complete and impeccably balanced, I could have sipped this all night. However, it was the ethereal clarity of the wine that really got to me – this was purity personified, almost crystalline in its clarity and breathaking transparency. Great finish too – long and absolutely effortless, full of seductive feminine wiles, with perfumed notes of flowers and spice and a tiny little touch of earthiness pulling away with just a little grip right at the end. Wow, wow and wow! This was everything you would want a Clos Beze to be. A lithe beauty, lighter than the Chambertin, but clearer, cleaner and purer; a wonderful, wonderful wine. Great now, it may be even better in a couple of years time.

2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): Wow. As good as the wines in the previous flights were, there was an immediate step-up in class once we reached the Rousseau Chambertin and Beze pair. What a wonderful nose this had, with dried earth and spice, deep draws of red cherries and flowers, and then a hint of fresh herb and a bit of menthol. An entrancing bouquet, but it was really on the palate where the wine took-off. This was just wonderful, sinewy and graceful at the same time as a great Chambertin should be, it married juicy acidity and a strong structure of fine tannins strong to beautifully pure flavours of red cherries and berries, orange peel and a little bit of earth, all perfectly packed into a beautifully integrated whole. The finish was long and graceful, filling the mouth in a seemingly neverending flow of Gevrey goodness. This was a tremendous wine – deep and powerful, yet effortlessly elegant, showing a wonderful clarity throughout. It is almost there I think, just needing that little bit of time to gain some complexity and to push it into greatness. I would love to drink this again in say 3-4 years. 95+

2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): Very enjoyable. This played the pretty teenage girl to the Clos St Jacques’ rather adult, more masculine reserve and strength. It had such an attractive nose, pure Gevrey, with a little touch of wet earth and then lots of pretty notes of red-fruit flecked by a nice dash of spice and just a little twist of herb. Rather lighter scents than on the rich nose of the CSJ, but this was really quite gorgeous. The palate had a lovely deliciousness to it. It was soft and silky, with wonderfully pure flavours of red fruit and spice and a tiny touch of earth wrapped together with fresh acidity and the very finest tannins in a wonderfully integrated package. While showing a nice sappiness on the attack, the wine did lighten up quite a bit past the midpalate, where I thought it lacked a bit of Grand Cru punch. However, it certainly made up for that with its lovely openness and clarity, which made it such a fun and delicious wine to drink. I have had this three times now. The first bottle in 2008 was tight and grumpy, the second in 2012 really lovely – I am glad to say that this bottle shared more in common with the later than the former. For all its forwardness here, there was just a little chew of tannins at the back-palate, which suggested that the wine can go on for sometime yet. I would not delay if you have a few bottles of this though – it is showing well and drinking ridiculously yummily.
