11/17/2022 - Delund Likes this wine: 92 pointsCork in good condition. Opened for an hour, but no decanter initially. Served at about 60 F. Took another half-hour of air in the decanter, and a slight increase in temperature to really show itself. Medium garnet color, slightest bit of bricking. In addition to the expected sediment, there was also a very fine secondary sediment which ended up coating the sides of my glass. Subdued nose with mint and vanilla notes. Rich dried black fruits, notes of burned menthol tobacco and sour cherry with velvety tannins on the palate. Still has a bit of acidity, medium length finish. A fairly big wine, but had I not known that it was a Napa cab, I would have guessed a pauillac, or maybe a margaux from a year like 2009. Still going strong, but I would drink soon. |

3/22/2019 - vpoms wrote: 88 pointsLightly hazy, deep garnet color. Clean nose of medium plus intensity with aromas of toast, chocolate, resin, cooked blackberries, earth, meat. Wine is fully developed. On the palate it is dry with medium plus acidity, medium tannins, high alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus flavor intensity of leather, earth, tar, prunes, chocolate. Finish is medium. Good wine drink now, not suitable for further aging, past it’s prime |

Savory, and with enough grip to last; good mouthfeel, and there are more positives than negatives by a long shot. But in a Cali Cab, I would prefer a little more mid palate fruit. All in all, I would choose this over a fruitier wine that was less savory if that was the choice; and I would choose a wine that was this savory and had more fruit presence if that were an option. |

9/11/2014 - King Cab wrote: 91 pointsNose of bright dark fruits with blackcherry and black raspberry right up there. Hints of warm leather add interest. Palate shows a wonderfully evolving pure and precise Napa Cabernet. Black fruit driven with some mid-weight dryness that I am not used to but certainly exact for this wine. I would say this one leans more toward the traditional style Cab that so many out there are screaming for. Balance is very admirable and tannins are a bit chewy still. Finish goes long. This is a conveyor belt of pure black goodness. If you like wines like Corison and older Mayacamas, this one is for you. A Tom Farella wine. |

3/1/2014 - CWilliam wrote: 92 pointsMy last bottle of this and it has improved from my prior tasting. Decanted for 1 hours and enjoyed with grilled skirt steak. Very right bank Bordeaux in style - black currants / cassis / tobacco / earthy. Showing no signs of oxidation and great with the steaks and long finish with medium+ body. 92+ This is just in it's drinking window in my opinion. Would buy again. |

12/7/2013 - King Cab wrote: 91 points100% estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Pretty dark color. Nose of black currants, sarsaparilla and a touch of herbaceousness. A swirl and a sip shows a very refined and pure cab as that herbaceousness goes more towards eucalyptus on the palate. Black fruits of currant, blackberry and black plum. The redder fruits emerge as it sits in the glass. Tannins are delicate and acidity spot-on. The real strength on this is its balance and delivery across the spectrum of your taste-buds finishing strong and clean. What a nice surprise my Saturday has delivered to me. |

7/27/2012 - bhouk wrote: NRThis bottle was comparatively closed versus my last bottle of this a year and a half ago. Still plenty of fruit and length. My strong sense is that this wine should be better a little further down the road. The finish is long and rich so I am satisfied that patience is the ticket. |

3/10/2012 - kevinpatrick wrote: 88 pointsPopped, decanted and poured. The nose on the first pour was subtle with fragrant and balanced dark fruits. First taste was balanced and consistent with the dark fruit nose. Thus far a nice wine fir for any daily drinker and a solid QPR. An hour into the decant we see the nose gain complexity with a chalky layer mixing with the solid fruit base. Not overly fragrant but very pleasant. An interesting mouthfeel is developing with a minerality mixing with the sharpening currants and blackberry fruits. Interestingly the alcohol didn’t reveal itself until now and at 14.5% the fruit-forward reveal makes more sense. This is a wine that should be served with food as the flavors greatly balance the medium-rare petite filet I am eating with it. The food also helps balance the alcohol of which I am growing less and less a fan of. Overall, a fine wine, excellent dinner companion and fantastic QPR. |

9/14/2011 - King Cab wrote: 92 pointsAlways the dark horse/left fielder and always a winner. This Farella made wine just brings it; it might not be loud and it might not stop the show, but deliver it does. Reddish black fruits with purity and poise. Somewhat in between the classic/new Napa style. Some great hints of leather saddle, graphite and espresso. A long finish completes this nicely. My #3 on the night. |

1/14/2011 - CWilliam wrote: 91 pointsBlackish red in the glass. Very complex nose - blackberry. black raspberry / leather / black currants / earthy. Velvetly mouthfeel - has structure but feels silky. Flavors consistent with nose with red fruits more evident on the palate and a touch of mineality - great acids, great balance, but as prior taster noted tannins are not noticeable. Long finish. Excellent with grilled flat iron steak - Great Cab for a Bordeaux fan - very enjoyable and good value whereit is priced. Would buy again. 91-92. Should garner a higher rating with time [Decanted for 2 hours before dinner]. |
