2006 Domaine Georges Mugneret/Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Open 30-45 minutes before tasting, then enjoyed over the next 2+ hours. Ripe red, black and blue berries on nose and palate, with the structure to be vibrant. Persistent and completely harmonious. A great Clos Vougeot, and a great performance for 2006. A clear step-up from the Echezeaux in the next glass.

One final glass remained for the next day and was refrigerated overnight. It was almost identical to the day before, perhaps slightly longer.

Open 30-45 minutes before tasting. very different vs other recent bottles. This was far more open, even mature and advanced with plenty of forest floor aromas. Good red fruit flavors, also nicely mature. While this kept evolving in glass over the evening, it was certainly enjoyable, but never as exciting as I expected.

Just over one final glass remained for the next day and was refrigerated overnight. This continued to seem fairly mature for its age, but without being flabby or very tired.

Overall not quite at the level of previous bottles.

A very interesting wine. The nose was stinky and full of barnyard funk. This blew off a little bit and it got sweeter with Rose petals and spices over time. However, the forest floor notes were very strong. The palate was bright and lively with roses and spice along with other red and dark fruit. Medium depth and finish

developing nose though still more primary than one would think with hints of dark cherry, raspberry, blood orange mixed with rhubarb, mineral and cinnamon spice. Juicy with an almost citrus-like impression to the fruit with lifting acidity. More aromas of dried rose petal, tomato leaf and bloody game come through with time in the glass. Very fine for its level with good fruit still in reserve.

Gorgeous nose that wafts warm cinnamon and nutmeg on top of baked dark cherry, ripe strawberry and a pine forest element. Outer edges of the palate show a touch of light citrus peel, with more focused tertiary and dark fruited flavors in the middle. With air the forest floor component takes on an almost minty / menthol note while a slight sassafras note can be found beneath the fruit. This flows like silk on the palate and has a cool, lengthy finish. Absolutely perfect at the moment. 93+

This was caught at a perfect moment. It changed so many times over the few hours I gave it that I lost track. It started with the impression of warm cinnamon, an incredibly comforting aromatic. Over a few hours it went through aromas of pine, forest floor, mint flowers and earth in various combinations - it never sat still. Later on I though about it, and I had never focused on fruit. It had fruit, but it was never the dominant player. There was always so much else going on that I never go to the red fruit/black fruit thing. I just kept inhaling this gorgeous perfume. What a wine.

From Les Lutenières, a vineyard on the other side of the RN74, in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, but outside the AOC. Very light colour, strawberry red; the nose is transparent, light and clean, cool and pure, flowers and red earth, lean but subtly sweet fruit, just a hint of Asian spice; the palate is pithy and elegant, light but with energetic minerality, bright and lively, very youthful for its eight years of age, cranberry fruit, hint of cream, smooth texture, engaging skin phenolics; good aromatic persistence on the finish, good length. Drinking well with no end in sight.

GRAND CRU BORGOGNA (LUPO CATTIVO LODI): Vegetale, linfatico, scuro e ombroso. Terziarizzazione pirazinica autunnale: foglie umide, humus.

Cellar raiding at Jeff's: Very pretty aromatics with lots of bright red fruit, earth, and higher toned floral, herbal, and spicy notes, though this feels just a touch thin on the palate. There's some sweet red fruit and more savoury earth there, but it finishes a touch short and doesn't quite show the depth that the nose suggests.

Pale ruby. Sexy nose, dominated by sous bois accompanied by red fruit and floral notes. There's intense energy on the palate, with tons of minerality, but the 2002 Clos Vougeot is so lightweight you wonder what body carries all this incredible acidity and flavor. Tannins are soft and seductive. This is just gorgeous. Drink now through 2025.

Casual Burg Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Red fruit throughout with background spice, this is clearly a wine requiring more cellar time and patience. This kept evolving in glass, but I never felt it was really totally forthcoming, and instead was the rare backward 2006.

Thursday Cellar Visits in Burgundy - Prieure-Roch, Mugneret-Gibourg and David Duband (Cote d'Or (Mostly)): Barrel tasting at the domaine, also from a new oak barrel. Black and red cherry with superb savory spice. Very concentrated, with a roast meat power and character I really liked. Very long, expressive finish. An excellent wine in the making.

Clearly lots of juicy red fruit, somewhat soft and rounded to start, dense and concentrated middle to finish. Very elegant once again, a top performance for this wine. VG+ for its level.

Rich and ripe with an opulent and almost jammy aromatic start. Same fun fruit continues onto the palate, but with more restraint and balance. Not yet fully integrated (no hurry), this has wonderful raw materials that are just starting to come together.

Thursday Cellar Visits in Burgundy - Prieure-Roch, Mugneret-Gibourg and David Duband (Cote d'Or (Mostly)): Tasting at the domaine. Bottled one month ago, like most of the cuvees. Black and red cherry aromas and flavors. Moderate savory spice. 50% new oak (vs typical 40% because of shortage of 2012 barrels to reuse). Starts forward and fun, finishes with more firmness and density. VG for its level.

Drunk over two nights. Perhaps a little closed initially, which exacerbated the acidity, but the elements integrated nicely over the first hour to reveal a very balanced and well proportioned wine. Lots of pure, vibrant red fruit backed by cherry pit, spices, minerality, marzipan and the faintest lick of oak. Quite light and focused across the palate, but with good intensity for the vintage and level. Slightly sappy. Tannins resolving, but still adding some grip to the finish. Classy juice.

Zachys BYO Lunch in Burgundy (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Small glass, brief note. Magnum directly from the domaine. Another wine that would have benefited from less tropical outdoor dining conditions in Beaune. Ripe red cherry and berry with very good density. Aromatically forward and engaging, then more firm and slightly backward on palate. Very good now, better after 2020.
