2019 Markham Merlot

Napa Valley more

The 2019 Markham merlot has a pleasant, soft nose that fills the room as soon as the cork is removed. The smell is reminiscent of a sweet blackberry vanilla jam but also has notes of sour cherry and mocha.

Unfortunately, as inviting as the aroma is, the taste is somewhat disappointing. It is not bad, but is not what the nose promised. There is a harsh tartness to the wine that drowns out hints of blackberry, cherry, chocolate, licorice, and espresso. The finish is long, which would be a good thing apart from the sourness. The tannins are slightly overpowering.

There is plenty of complexity to the wine, so I don't want to count it out yet. I suspect the harshness will decrease with age.

Reds 2-3 hours of air in a decanter. Very nice wine—has all of the primary characteristics of petite Verdot. Drinking nicely now, can easily go another 23 or four years, maybe longer.

Opens to black cherries, red plums, pastry dough, and fresh herbs. Displays good structure, balance, and weight, and it's still showing firm but that works itself out with air.

Rich, savory, this shows classic Napa Valley aromas and flavors black cherries, currants, oak, and eucalyptus. This is restrained but it is generous for its impeccable structure and Old School Napa character. It is just now coming into its own and shows tremendous length on the espresso finish. Lovely.

Slo-oxed for 15 minutes which unleashed dark red fruits on the nose. The medium bodied palate showed some blackberry along with black and red cherry, and some spice. The acidity was nicely balancing and any tannins were integrated. A very flavorful Merlot with a great QPR at $18. Could continue to hold for a few years.

Found this while visiting family, it was not properly stored but the cork was in good condition with a hint of sediment just above the shoulders only, and no bricking.

Aromas were still going strong, black plum, perfume, leather, prune, and blackberry. Medium plus flavors of red plum, black cherry, vanilla, cedar, pepper, and minerals. Medium finish, acidity, and tannins.

Jan 2024 at its peak, just starting to feel like some dust. Mild tannins and smooth, without sweetness and with solid structure. Good ripe fruit that matched a garlic covered filet. If you have any, take them now, at peak.

1978 Markham Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville Vineyard

WOW. What an incredible wine! Probably one of the best wines tasted in 2023.

Purchased at Dry Creek Liquors, Littleton, CO., in the early 1980s for $11.79 - before the employee discount. Stored in a cool cellar ever since.

Ullage was approximately ½ inch. Cork was tight and required use of a Durand, as expected. The base of the cork was discolored for the first ½ inch, yet the cork was effective.

Utterly amazing for a 45-year old bottle of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with the “Yountville Vineyard” designation. Going out on a limb, but I would surmise that these CS grapes came from an old vineyard given the density of flavors and how well the wine performed this evening.

Decanted with a small amount of sediment. Color was a shockingly strong, red, hue with no signs of brown tawnyness. Nose and palate, were for the first 10 minutes, a bit astringent, but that soon subsided to reveal a common thread of fully integrated elements. Smells like old second growth Bordeaux w/o the cellar funk. Think sour cherries, leather, tar, red/black licorice, plum, dry red apple, and watermelon rind, to name just a few. There were also some very discrete savory spice notes on the marjoram / thyme spectrum, but noting objectionable. In addition, there was a bit of beefy bullion that shows up after about 30 minutes in the glass. This wine was quite well balance with acids, flavors, and tannins all in harmony. No eucalyptus, thankfully, and no oak interference. The wine seemed to reach its zenith at about two hours; no complaints whatsoever.

I believe 1978 was richer rounder year, similar to 1980. And as I recall, I liked the 1978s and 1980s, better than the 1977s, 1979s, and 1981s, which for their own reasons, did not produce those broad-shouldered profiles. Alcohol 13.5 percent.

How long will this wine age? I honestly, don’t know – maybe another five to ten years or so. I suspect the wine will outlive the cork, if that helps.

(Served with grilled lamb, black-eyed peas, Brussels sprouts, and roasted sweet potatoes.) Merry Christmas.
