12/9/2023 - Glenn Gilbert Likes this wine: 91 points13.5% alcohol; imported by Vinamericas Inc, Miami, Florida; the winery is located near Laguardia in the Basque Country, northern Spain, about 80 km south of Bilbao on the Basque coast, and not much further to the French border; composite cork, 1 mm or less wine seepage into the cork, cork aroma of sourness; heavy-weight foil; medium legs, dark purple; weak nose of sourness, stone fruit; opened, oxygenation hastened via Vinturi, tasted 15 minutes later at 12 degrees C in a wine glass designed by Riedel for Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot; the taste of this full-bodied wine is a real treat after evaluating five or six less outstanding Rioja's in the past two weeks for CellarTracker; good balance of components like fruitiness, sweetness, sourness and bitterness; nothing seems out of place or 'adjusted'/'added'; some oak and vanilla with a mineral/forest floor background; long finish emphasizes the pithiness and mellowness of the fruit; would pair well with umami foods, both hard core like filet mignon and periphery like salmon or chicken; an outstanding Rioja with a high PQR, well worth Costco's price, which is sometimes marked down even further |

Aged in FR oak for 18 months, bottled unfiltered. Deep ruby colour. Intense aroma of blackberries, cocoa, coconut, leather, plums, chocolate, toasted oak. Full body, concentrated, powerful and deep with great structure, plummy flavours, toasted oak and chocolate hints, medium+ acidity, high grippy but fine chewy tannins. |

There is no fruit to talk about, just a high amount of bitterness and some faded tannins. I poured the remaining part down the drain 2 hours after opening, as it kept tasting worse. |
