2013 Ridge Three Valleys

Sonoma County Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

Not decanted. Medium dark purple core and ruby rim in the glass. Youthful aromas of loganberry, tar, green pepper and smoked game. The palate brings tart blackberry, black cherry and sweet licorice. Acidity is high, and tannins are medium. Finishes at medium length with a touch of residual sugar. Overall, I felt this was unbalanced and too clinical in character for my taste. Pretty much unchanged on day two.

We drank the 2002 and the 2003 side by side - both tremendous wines. The 2003 was a little more austere than the 02. We waffled back and forth as to which one was better, in the end we decided there were both great but different. Less fruit forward, more bordeaux like. A little more mineral, slightly more spice, but well balanced and drank well over 5 hours.

We drank the 2002 and the 2003 side by side. Both fantastic. The 2002 was beautiful, the fruit was pronounced, blackberry, currants, tremendous balance, great acidity. This wine was very much alive after 14 years, must have been the petite syrah in the blend I suppose. Likely would have held up for 3-5 more years but was tremendous last night.

Royal Opera House and Decanter Magazine Wine Gala Dinner (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London): This was lovely, big and rich but very well-balanced. Compelling. With saddle of venison, winter roots, celeriac puree, red wine sauce.

Amazing nose! Wild sagebrush, raging campfire, crushed strawberry fruit, old pine tree. Mature strawberry fruit with just a hint of funkiness in the mouth. Mid palate is brisk, but carries flavors of charcoal, pipe tobacco, and sweet candied plums. Dynamic finish of eucalyptus that leaves your tongue tingling. Believe it or not, this is not past peak and will hang around for a little while longer. Of course at this age, there are only good bottles.

No notes taken. Deep ruby with purple notees. Impressive aromas of black fruit, leather, tobacco, dark chocolate. Dry, medium(-) acidity, medium(+) ripe tannin, high alcohol and medium-medium(+) body. Flavors of blueberries, black cherries, chocolats, nutmet, sweet spice, cinnamon. Full body, yet elegant and not overpowering. Great length with mineral focused chalky finish. Balanced, remarkably light-footed texture, elegant and sinewy. Probably the most tannic of the lot. Keep another 3-5 years and then decant and eat grilled meat.

Pours a deep purple with aromas of black and purple fruits, oak and green herbs.

The palate is dark raspberry, blackberry, cassis, a pinch of oak and herbs, and a nice mineral streak. The tannins are approachable at this stage, but additional age should help. Medium bodied, balanced and made to age. Really delicious with only 13.0%abv.

top notch yumminess from Ridge. Very unique nose on this one. Cran-blueberry. Excellent mouthfeel. Full, chunky mid-palate. A somewhat disappointing finish given the early excitement. Alcohol taste but without the heat. Could use more time to come together.

Blueberry pie, vanilla, cupcake batter. Medium tannin, bright blue fruits, decent acidity. Long finish. Delicious, will be even better with some bottle age.

Began with some tired, oxidative tones but freshens up to show cola, dried currant, cedar, over a fleshy and silky palate. After 6 hours there's ample sweet fruit, some smoky gravelly tobacco notes, attractive green streak, pleasant acidity, I wish we hadn't drunk this up so quickly. Mmm mmm old school Cali.

Can still go for a while.

If drinking now, I'd decant. It needed a good bit of time to get fleshed out. Initially, the oak character was a bit forward/out of place. It was eventually enveloped in the juicy savory fruit.

Deep and silky looking, purple and ruby
Nose began very perfumed, now coming into cooked fruits after 30 mins in glass.
Red fruits, spice, alcohol, boisterous and young. Delicious but promising more.
Keep for at least 2-3 years, but if you like them like this enjoy now... with a Montecristo as I am now.

Slender and tone, not even a hint of jammy zin voluptuousness on day 1, but rather a surprisingly almost Burgundian body and little tannic grab (or oak). Rich coffee and mocha rising off the attack and carrying through to an entirely pleasant pine, "eucalyptus" alcoholic astringency on finish. Prune if forced to call fruit. Sweetens up and smooths out on days 2 and 3, adding tar and dark rock tones, too. Delicious and characterful. Strong buy.

Major disappointment. Received this by mistake from wine.com instead of 2012 Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay. Way too ripe, flabby, with insufficient acidity. Didn't improve over several hours of breathing. Could shed some oak fat over the next year or two, but I am not seeing how this could improve significantly with cellaring. So much for Ridge's restrained style.

Pnp from a 375ml. Nose had tobacco, prunes, plums, and soil. Palate had good depth and intensity with black fruit, prunes, leather, tobacco and liquorice. The half bottle format is drinking very well now. I believe the 750ml will have at least 8-10 years to go.

Very nice wine. May be near the pop and pour stage. Very pleasant rich and lush purple and black fruit. Can drink with or without food, but probably won't stand up to really spicy dishes. Excellent finish. Not sure this needs to sit for years in a bottle.
