2008 Dehlinger Claret

Russian River Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/30/2015 - Dutradan Likes this wine: 94 points

this wine is showing big fruit and big balls coming from The RR valley. This will show up any Napa cab in this price range and beyond. I feel sorry for those that don't know about our little secret tucked away off the guerneville hiway.
Kudos to Tom, Eva and Carmen and of course Carole who probably keeps them all in line

Initially bold and strong, it didn't really open up as much as I'd hoped. Rich currant on the nose with multi-berry palate. Rich but not necessarily complex; drinkable, but not worth repurchasing.

Consistent with prior review - Lemon yellow color with intriguing pear, lychee, lemon oil, grapefruit pith, and a subtle bergamot leaf aromas. On the palate, it's medium bodied, and wonderfully textured with very good acidity and charming apricot, orange, and grapefruit and mineral flavors. and fl Blend of 66% Semillon, 24% Muscadelle, and 10% Chaselas (aka Palomino); It's a modern-day version of Hock, a white blend that was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s 13.7% alcohol

2008 J. Rochioli Pinot Noir Little Hill

Russian River Valley more

5/29/2015 - Jsk2738 Likes this wine: 96 points

One of the great Pinots out there. I only recently was able to get some, but have accumulated about a case over Winebid. Great, complex wine. Since it has a little age on it, it is pretty great right from the first pour. If this wine peaked earlier, I wouldn't be able to tell. It is still drinking really well. Rochioli was on a roll with some of the 2008 and 2009 single vineyard varietals. Some of the 2010s and 2012s are quite good too, but this 2009 Little Hill and maybe it's 2008 cousin rank right up there.

2012 Aubert Pinot Noir Ritchie Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

5/29/2015 - Jsk2738 Likes this wine: 92 points

Perhaps should have decanted longer than an hour. It started out wild, with an astringent mid-palate and an acidic finish. Still good mind you, one of the better Aubert's. After an hour, the harshness had mellowed, but time was up. I suspect I would score this wine higher with another could of years in the cellar or more time in the decanter. Very Burgundian style, not fruit forward and some earth. I believe Aubert's own claim that this will last through 2026. I'm on the Aubert mailing list, but only have a few bottles. Will wait awhile until cracking the Reuling, SV or estate vineyard, as Ritchie is supposedly the most approachable now.

2009 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 4 Barrel

Russian River Valley more

5/29/2015 - Jsk2738 Likes this wine: 95 points

I've had two bottles, both purchased off Winebid at the same time. The first bottle was great, one of the best Pinots I've ever had. The second bottle was not good, it may have gone off in transit or storage along the way. I still have a few bottles left, will update my notes when I've tried the next one. If the first bottle was any indication, consumed in 2014, this wine has a lot of life left in it, perhaps 5 years.

Nice nose of dark cherries, iron, meat and olives. Good balance and no heaviness. Compared to the scent the taste is a bit simple and also a bit short. All in all a really nice wine but, considering the price, I will probably not buy more.

Another great bottle, but this time I tasted more of the black blueberries, blackberries, and a noticeable kick of brett/olives. All good, just a little twist from our last bottle some 6 months ago.

Solid grocery store quality Chardonnay. Good color, faint nose, lots of fruit without too much oak. Decent finish. Another of those California Chardonnays that don't really make you stand up and take notice, but offer good drinking at a modest price. This one is steers a middle course between the fruity, citrus style and the more austere offerings. Very acceptable and won't disappoint at the $10 level.

2008 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

more

5/29/2015 - jlhkiss Likes this wine: 93 points

This wine exceeded expectations. Decanted for about 2+ hours before dinner of grilled BBQ chicken, rice, and salad. Very dark, purple violet color. Nose brings a distinctive mix of wet clay, blackberries, olives, rose petals, raspberries, leather, and some dark cherry menthol. The palate is square, jagged, full-bodied, and extremely concentrated, bringing more blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, sweet tobacco, cherry cobbler baking spices, fresh mint, and some touches of dried herbs. The finish is long, uneven, and very interesting - not fully developed yet - still with thick tannins. I'd drink this though 2025. It should evolve nicely.

The palate is medium-bodied, moderately bright acidity with a silky texture. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, plum, saddle leather, and attractive earth. Finishes long and upbeat with refined tannins. Drink from 2016 to 2028.

Sad about this. Not in the realm of most Thackrey red wines for me. Reminiscent of some inexpensive Viruas from Rioja or Sauv Blancs from Loire. Lemongrass, cat urine and almond. Won't get again unless I hear otherwise, though I do have another downstairs.

California Syrah Blend, Syrah more

5/29/2015 - SchlaepDog Likes this wine: 92 points

Rather hot nose of alcohol and stewed red fruit, but the pallette is more refined with nicely textured red raspberry, black cherry fruit with notes of pomegranate as well. Distinct charcoal and smoke flavors emerge mid-pallette followed by creamy red/black fruit on the finish where some light tannins emerge along with some spicy oak. Overall, nice wine, lots going on here, probably around/near peak, I'll hold my last bottle until 2017-18.

5/27/2015 - Life At Your Leisure wrote: 93 points

Dark ruby color turning purple at the rim with a deep nose of red and dark berries, floral hints of violets and rose petals, vanilla and smoked oak. The palate is dry, densely structured, full-bodied, with a silky texture. Flavors of black cherry, raspberry, graphite, scorched cedar, and spice form the core. At this age, the flavors as expected, have harmonized quite well, providing a well-balanced, layered, and complex drinking experience. Finishes long with hints of vanilla and dusty Alexander Valley earth. Drink now until 2029.

Decanted. Still needs a few years, when it might merit an upscore. Interesting in that it is one of the older school Arnot-Roberts Griffin's Lair wines. Which is to say that it was new school bigger alcohol before they changed course. Still yummy. 14.7%
