Colour: burgundy, translucent
Nose: lots of cherry - sour cherry and morello. A touch of barnyard when first opened, but this blew off fairly quickly. Some sweet spice. Perhaps a touch of cassis.
Palate: again, dominated by cherry, and perhaps cassis. A touch of barnyard, which again blew off quickly. Sappy, with a touch of stalkiness - perhaps a few whole bunches used? There seemed to be some carbonic maceration character too. A touch of old French oak, but very subtle. Sweet spice. Moderate berry like acid. A touch of smooth chalky tannins, but not very much. A little short and simple for a premier cru, but otherwise pretty good.
Wine was drunk at BYO restaurant, notes made afterwards at home.

Nose: Matured nose with aromas of red fruit like red cherry, red currant, strawberry and quince underlaid with a certain sweetness & a underbrush component.
Palate: Lean charakter but not thin. Still a bit of tannins left, a bit "bloody" in the beginning. Not a lot of tension but nice to enjoy now.

Black and red cherry starting to mature. Dried herb and subtle background spice. Moderate weight, but very balanced and elegant. This will be very good for at least a decade+.

Surprised by this one. It started out a bit thin and showing oak and not a lot of fruit. But good Burgundy has the ability to add weight in the glass and that's what this one did. After an hour and half of coaxing it developed into a lovely mid-weight Gevrey, smooth finish with none of the wood splinters I had feared at the outset. Still has life ahead of it but no reason to hold off drinking it.

Brown cast to the orange rim on the pale Burgundy red color. Ripe nose includes varnish notes and stewed fruit, but that said this still comes off as pleasant and balanced - the skillfully rendered fruit and acidic balance prevails. This is fully mature, with associated secondaries and classic Burgundian sous bois, soy sauce, summer hay, cherry compote. Beautiful Barthod velvety texture carries this through. The last glass was the best, with firming structure to accommodate the texture and luscious, ripe fruit. Drink up.

Tonight this is a really nice village Gevrey that was drinking well after an hour or so of air. There's good depth to the penetrating earthy, dark fruit along with a moderately acidic core. Very nice.

Wow. Holy moly. Wasnt expecting this. What a wine. I LOVE this wine. For some, it will be seen as "young", needing time for complexity. To me, I think this wine is great now and will definitely be great in the future. Super concentrated. Huge nose. Loads of black fruit, some charcoal, some pepper and spice box. Truly amazing. Unlike any Burg I have had. Much closer to a Cali Pinot in its size. Hard to believe this is an 03. 95 points tonight and probably higher and this ages.

Dark ruby color and clear. Pleasant nose, although a bit restrained. On the palate, ripe red fruit, some minerality, smooth and elegant with some remaining grip. A very good village wine that can be enjoyed now, but will probably continue to evolve for a few years.

Light body. Floral nose. Soft tannins with a bright acidity that is not at all astringent. Softens and opens up beautifully after and hour. Flavors of strawberry, cranberry, and a bit of cinnamon emerge. Very nice compliment with food. Ready to drink now, but has enough fruit and acidity for a few more years of aging.

1999 Dominique Laurent Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

5/29/2015 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 95 points

This deep red/garnet wine has reached an impressive level of elegance and complexity. Within the first 30 minutes in the glass, it is effusive of red plum, milk chocolate, coriander, cardamom and savory game aromas. Medium-bodied and with medium acidity, it follows with similar flavors in a very round frame. The tannins have largely resolved, the oak is beautifully integrated and the alcohol (listed as 13%) is seamless. Layered and building in the middle, it closes with a silky-textured, long finish. Likely at its apogee, well-cellared bottles of this Grand Cru should be at their best over the next three years. Drink now-2018.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

5/29/2015 - Christine Havens Likes this wine: 92 points

Marly limestone enriched by traces of iron is the primary soil type in Clos de Bèze vineyard parcels, and this vineyard has under cultivation for a very long time, since the 7th century. The 2002 Bouchard Père & Fils Chambertin Clos de Bèze is rustic and austere, though charmingly so, with barnyard, wet hay, game, damp tilth, and dried cherry notes. Despite this, it's quite bright, with moderate, woody tannins and a raw, feral streak running through its mid-weight frame. Medium plus finish. 13.0% ABV

Sweetish, almost new worldish red cherry fruit, lots of spicy light-char oak, lots of acid, some reduction. Lacking in Vosne character. It's pleasant enough, but the fruit and acidity are bit disjointed and the oak is not yet integrated. Given the generally high regard for this producer, I suspect this is just shut down. Come back in a decade?

Last tasted five years ago. At the time wrote "drink me" (and 94p). Now it has changed to "drink me up" (and 88p). Dark red; a bit of caramel and licorice in the nose; a bit molded and flat attack, on the sharp side but still with some body and taste; clearly a good wine (once) but think this is overdue now

Tasted at the Domaine. Similar to the 2012, I am amazed and how powerful and expressive this is. Amazing spice and detail on the nose and palate. These wines today have been so impressive and to me they somehow have the detail and finesse of DRC but with the sexy power of Leroy. That's a damn good combination and I am now a confirmed buyer of these wines.

Tasted at the Domaine from bottle. Whoa. My first modern La Romanee and now I get why values are where they are. Incredible spice and detail on the nose. There seemed to be a bit of reduction, but that did go away after an hour. Incredibly dense and powerful, yet light on its feet in the mouth. Infinitely long finish with amazing grip and spice. I am very surprised by the power, detail and expressiveness already present in such a young wine.
