2013 Liquid Farm Chardonnay White Hill

Sta. Rita Hills more

A decent wine but was expecting more. Lacking enough acid which makes it come across as flabby. Some hints of tropical fruit flavors but really more stone fruit. Thin and fairly mineral driven finish which, if tasted blind would make me think it was a SB. Ok, but there are better choices at this price. Time may help but not convinced it will.

Poured through Vinturi for splash decant ... Big, blue-black fruit to open. Balanced by spice, earth and just a hint of clotted cream. Rich and full, but not heavy or sweet. Acid pop and intact tannic backbone; not at all hot, despite the relatively high ABV (and its youth). There's a welcome edge of refinement on this big, bold bruiser of a blend.

Heavier, extracted style of pinot in 2004. Cherry color with a lighter to watery rim. Nose is strong with cherry, spices and a hint of cream. Body is fairly viscous. Attacks the palate right away with cherry fruit and heavy spice but finishes with a touch of cherry cola and honey. Very interesting and improved its integration and balance on 2nd day. Not for burgundian purists! Still going strong but I'd say it's slightly past peak as freshness is waning.

Earthy and spicy, plenty of dark fruit to it. Bigger and heavier than many Pinots, but not out of the norm for Santa Maria Valley. Nice wine.

Bright ruby color turning crimson at the rim. The nose gives off raspberry, red licorice, anise, and mushroom notes. The palate is medium-bodied, slightly fruity with a silky texture. Flavors of ripe red berries, cola, earth, and toasted oak are livened-up by its bright acidity. Finishes long and earthy. Drink now until 2025.

Last of the Christian 4 vines vintages. Big fruit and heavy Zin characteristics. Great way to end the evening, but still a crowd favorite, and still drinking well.

Late Mother's Day celebration. Amazing Zin from one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in central California. Had dinner from the local Italian joint, couldn't have been better. Perfect timing for this wine, due to the magnum bottle size, the Dusi vineyards never disappoint. Best Zin out there in my opinion.

Has some funky earth in the nose, but gobs of cherry cola in the mouth on first taste....some nice spicyness and good texture/finish. A bit hot in the finish so it must have a decent amount of alcohol. This one is age worthy so I'll leave my other bottle to lay for another few years to see what happens. Not an unusual observation for a clonal.

I've been on a Qupe kick recently, but this one I didn't like as much as the Sawyer-Lindquist or Bien Nacido syrahs I've had recently. A bit too much leather and barnyard; I find it fights with the fruit in this one and is distracting. I wanted to say it's like a young Cornas, but it lacks the harmony. Perhaps it will come in time! I'll probably stick to the other vineyards for now.

If served blind, I would have certainly guessed Pinot Noir as it smells like a Pinot and in some senses tastes like one as well. Red fruity and stemmy nose, this light bodied wine show cherry and strawberry fruit in an elegant fashion with some earthy and spice notes folding into the medium long finish. Tasty, but not spectacular. Not made for a lot of aging, drink now or through 2016 for best results.

I really loved this in the past, so I thought this was a natural choice for Chardonnay Day. It might have lost a step, but this is still fantastic. Lemon meringue on the nose--the kind that is golden brown on the top with a caramel nuttiness coming through. On the palate, quite viscous and creamy. Whoa. Yes, I said it might have lost a step, but it's a baby-step, this is still lights-out. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com

Golden color. Nose: lemon curd, pineapple core, melon rind, and white peach with accents of orange blossom, nutmeg, cardamon, vanilla wafer, hazelnut, popcorn, toasted meringue, and river stone. Medium body on the palate: lemon/lime curd, green apple, white peach, and pineapple core framed by popcorn, toasted meringue, white pepper, nutmeg, hazelnut, lime zest, and river stone. Medium+ acidity. Lingering green apple skin, lime zest, hazelnut, and river stone on the moderate/shorter finish. Well made, balanced, and versatile. Pair with all kinds of baked/grilled white fish, creamy cheeses, baked chicken dishes, or white sauced clam pasta. Drink over the next 2 years.

2012 Cambria Pinot Noir Bench Break

Santa Maria Valley more

5/20/2015 - tonepad Likes this wine: 90 points

Cambria's Bench Break is so damn consistent. Big bing cherry mouthfeel and flavor, some prune and plum. Not much on the nose except early after opening. It's just a trustworthy and enjoyable pour. It does vary thru vintages and this 2012 is one of the good ones along with 2013. I don't know how this would fare with more bottle age since I usually like my Cambria PN after 3-4 years never much longer. They seemed to be designed that way. Btw it did lose a bit with a second night leftover pour.

Very dark, extracted and almost viscous. Sweet penetrating nose of lavender, some camphor, a bit of tar. and lots of red berry. Long 30 second + finish with bold very California, warm climate expression of Syrah. Might be better with another year or so of bottle age but pretty tasty now.

2nd bottle I've tried. This time partial blind tasted (1 out of 6 possible Pinots) Dark cherry color, medium concentration, med viscosity. On the nose I smell a good amount of alcohol, dark/purple fruit vs. red fruit. Blackberry, ripe cherry on the nose. A hint of oak. On the palate I get a lot of spice, heat. Alcohol is high, fruit is medium. A good amount of earthiness / mustiness that I don't prefer. A bit over ripe. Fuller body than most Pinots. Tannin is med, a drink now type of Pinot. My second experience was much different than my first - I'm a bit puzzled. It's a screw top so I don't think it was faulted. 86-87

2014 Stolpman Viognier

Ballard Canyon more

5/21/2015 - Haggis wrote: 87 points

I agree completely with JonnyG's note. This has some very nice things going for it: minerality, acidity, and tart austerity. This does lack some complexity and lushness/viscosity, which would have added a lot to this wine. I know what Stolpman is reaching for, but I'm not sure that Viognier from the Central Coast can attain the complexity found in the Loire. This by no means is a poor wine. It's actually quite acceptable, particularly for the price (at least, what I paid for it).
