2004 Château Pontet-CanetPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/15/2024 - NickA Likes this wine: 92 pointsAnother 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Same bottle as SimonG, rather than the other notes from this day. Rather brightly-fruited nose, with some graphite coming through. Fresh, elegant and juicily red-fruited on the palate, with a herbal side and a touch of espresso. A compelling wine, and much improved from a bottle I had five years ago. To our surprise, everyone preferred this to the Baron. |

4/22/2024 - americanstorm Likes this wine: 90 pointsOpened at the end of the evening to compare to a bottle of 1995 Pontet-Canet a friend brought. The nose and pallet of both wines were almost identical with the 2014 being slightly brighter/fresher with more acidity. Given the high critic scores of the 14 I expected a great wine but this was average at best and I was underwhelmed. Of the 6 different red, two bottles each of 13 dunn Napa Valley 13 Palo Scavino bric del fiasc 16 torbreck Descendant and 08 circa cab franc, the two Pontet-Canet were my least favorite. Perhaps I'm just not a bordeaux guy or maybe my pallet isn't sophisticated enough (im sure the bordeaux lovers would say this- LOL) to appreciate them, but, at least for me, there are a lot of places making better wine then bordeaux. Would not buy again and not a particularly good qpr. Having said all that, I do think Bordeaux makes the best chardonnay in the world! Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

10/26/2023 - SuperSomm Likes this wine: 87 pointsDeep ruby colour with garnet edges. Pronounced and developing nose with blackcurrant, black cherry, prune, cedar, tobacco, leather, black pepper and forest floor. Medium (+) taste of blackcurrant, black cherry, red plum, prune, cedar, tobacco, leather, forest floor and black pepper. Long and dry finish. Medium acidity. High tannins. Medium body. A very good and well matured Haut-Médoc that is peaking. Drink now or over the next couple of years. Goes well with beef or lamb. |

4/21/2024 - king-bing wrote: NRRather like my last TN of 2018. 13%abv. Level into neck. Cork broke but came out easily. Quite a lot of sediment. Classic and lovely aged Bordeaux nose, though more of the churches and leather than cigar & pencil type. Some red fruit - cranberry? The palate is similar, though definitely savoury, staying the right side of austere. No 1990 plushness here. A touch of spice (allspice?) in the finish added interest. Held up well over 2-3 hours. Not a grand or big scoring sort of wine but a delightful one nevertheless. |

4/21/2024 - Sun_Ship Likes this wine: 89 pointsDeep and exuberant cassis and ripe blackcurrants to the nose, with already soft tannins and full bodied weight. This is without great precision and edging towards being confected, but mocha, smoke and oak add a touch of depth to the ripe fruit. The finish is somewhat limited, but loaded with gravelly dark fruit. A lovely daily drinker. |

4/15/2024 - NickA Likes this wine: 92 pointsAnother 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Initially more attractive than the Rauzan, its charms much more conventional. Big, rich, smoky nose, with some exotic musk. Smooth and luxurious on the palate, with attractive blue fruit. Tannins now very well integrated, but there was a nice chew to the finish. Definitely tasty, but the consensus seemed to be that the Rauzan ultimately offered more interest. |

4/15/2024 - NickA Likes this wine: 93 pointsAnother 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Same bottle as SimonG (the other notes from today were from an adjacent table with a different bottle). A compelling nose, with some sweet decay that at first was slightly offputting but increasingly made sense. Quite complex on the palate, which was slightly lactic, had some graphite and game as well as purple fruit, and (its best attribute) was refreshingly pure and middleweight. Something of a dry finish, but oh-so-friendly to the food (bone marrow on toast in my case). My and the group's #2 wine tonight. |

Opened Friday evening and slow oxed for 24 hours, had half the bottle on Saturday and the second half Sunday. Kept at 55 the entire time but better to drink at 60. The wine is flawless, perfect balance, elegance, and harmony. Everything you expect from a great Bordeaux. 4 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (4) |

4/21/2024 - Raywilliams420 Likes this wine: 93 pointsSat in the bottle for 2 hours. Took a glass worth out to allow air to hit the wine. Soft dark fruit an softer red fruit flavors on the palate with a nice amount of time on the finish. It doesn’t die down fast either. It holds its weight Very light tannins but they seem to build a lil bit as the taste lingers on your palate an acidity is balanced more than the tannins are. Nose has a dark fruit smell with some oak influence but all are pretty harmonious with one another DEfinately a good drinker an a wonderful qpr. |

4/21/2024 - Francophile1 Likes this wine: 91 pointsPoured from a 375ml bottle and decanted for 90 minutes. Consumed over the subsequent two hours. Aeration was rewarded on the nose as it opened up into a lovely lady. Wonderful! The finish was a disappointment as it was tight and lean with grainy tannin. The nose did not match the finish. Very typical of the 2005 vintage. What this tells me is that 2005 is the longest lived vintage of the ‘00 decade. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

4/21/2024 - Francophile1 Likes this wine: 91 pointsPop n Poured from a 375ml and consumed over a 90 minute period. More similar to my most recent 2021 note. This might be fading a bit. Fully mature, silky, smooth, and resolved tannin. True to its St Julien roots. Drink up! |
