14.4% alcohol. Light red color. This has hit its peak drinking window, I believe. Elegant nose of red cherry and earth. Uncomplicated but linear and full of finesse on the palate, it unfolds cherry flavors across the tongue that gain velvety texture on the palate as it persists. Light and lovely. A-

COLOR: Lemony-gold, translucent (by careful decanting!)
NOTE: Nose is sweet citrus followed quickly by burnt marshmallow, graham, poached apple/pear (like a funky fruit-based S'More). Mouth is medium+ and full of ripe citrus, creme brulee, a little heat into the smoky finish. Good acidity, but a bit oak-heavy. Got one more bottle but I think I will sell it.

At a perfect drinking plateau, mellow and layered, with nice black and blue fruit tones, gentle spiciness and a pleasing earthiness mark this a several steps above most cabs at this price point ($20). A delightful drink that went as well with lamb chops as with seared tuna salad.

Rhys dinner: intense but softened cooked fruits with NW core; dusty tannins, lavender. Nice cool climate NW Syrah. Had a real OW feel to it excepting the subtly intense fruity core.

2010 Carlisle Syrah Bennett Valley

more

7/29/2015 - csimm1161 wrote: 87 points

On the nose, faint aromas of purple fruit and an initial whiff of alcohol. On the palate, very subtle (almost fragile) blue and purple fruit flavors. Especially light and lithe for a Carlisle Syrah. It was definitely missing some of the olive, bay leaf, and forest floor complexities I have found characteristic of Mike Officer's other Syrahs (e.g.: Papa's Block or Rosella's).

I made the mistake of decanting this wine; after an hour, what fruit had been there was virtually undetectable, instead replaced by strong cedar and wood notes. Tannins had subsided to the point that the wine offered very little by the final sips. I would suggest not only drinking now, but also limiting service to a PnP with immediate consumption. I do not recommend decanting or letting O2 get the best of what fruit is left in this wine.

Reaching for a '12, mistakenly opened '13... but pleasantly surprised with the aromas and tastes from such a young wine; we finished the bottle over two days - very pleased. It can be served now; however, I'll sit on my '13's for another couple of years; I'm very confident it will be well worth the wait.

2012 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

more

7/30/2015 - TheLittleHorse Does not like this wine: 75 points

This is my second time to have Kosta Brown in the last 12 months and I'm going to go out on a limb and say two things: I want to like these but they simply are not interesting enough and secondly I feel the wines are a fabrication of how pinot noir should be expressed. What I really don't understand is why even bother to drink pinot noir that is this extracted and hot, with the alcohol level reaching nearly 15%. The fruit is overly tangy and the wine lacks any of the subtle characteristics that make good pinot noir so enjoyable to drink. Possibly this is two young and I should give it another 5-10 years to properly evolve.

This was very good but a slight disappointment given my experience with the 2007 a few months back. A bit heavy handed stylistically for me (too much oak and extraction) put this syrah a little to far out of balance for my liking. Definitely some nice interesting secondary flavors developing and a good QPR was just hoping for a little more out of this bottle. Had with a bone-in ribeye

Relatively dark, almost orange color. Smell has unripe plum and some similarities with amontillado. Initially, the taste is tannic; but if you keep the wine open for a little while, the tannins seem to fade away, and you have more pleasant orange-wine-like flavors - a great balance between fresh stonefruit notes and lots of minerality. Refreshing and delicious.
