2011 White Rose Estate Pinot Noir Dragon's Bluff Maresh Vineyard

Dundee Hills more

First tasted this wine in the barrel back in 2012 and made a small investment in futures. First tasting at the winery later on suggested something a little green. Now with Copper River salmon in season I thought it was time to revisit.

Few wines fill the Vinum Extreme with such opulence as do those of White Rose; this one quite potently fragrant with some resiny notes. Fairly pale but bright glittering red. Notable acid, but now much more fruit emerging, tart cherry and redcurrants, quite bracing. I liken this vintage somewhat to 2007 and would venture that in four years it will be quite something better.

Ripe, soft, plummy, maybe a bit overripe as this approaches the end of its drinkability. Vaguely herbal and minty, enjoyable.

I don't understand why there isn't more domestic wine like this. A lovely, balanced combination of earth, tea and pretty red pinot fruit; notably missing extended hang time, cold soak extraction, and new French oak. This isn't trying to be the most important thing on the table, it just provides a lovely counterpoint to dinner. We need more wines like this from CA, OR, and WA at this price point. I know CA, OR and WA can make compelling wines of depth, complexity and character; let's have some wines for the weekday table - wines that live in the value range that aren't sexed up, sweetened up, and oaked up. This is a good place to start.

I really admire the old school style of these wines.... 13% Alc, whole cluster and low 25% new oak. Light see threw amber cranberry color. Like so many 2011s the color belies the concentration and intensity. Soil infused spicy nose. This is very intriguing. The palate is again soily, spicy with some raspberry flavors. I have a about a 3rd of the btl left to see what its like a night later. Paid $36 and worth that. Only gripe is the bowling pin shaped btl while cool doesn't fit in my wine cabinet. Like the corny retro 60s label.

Superbe.

Light ruby with strawberry nose. Dry, tart fruit of strawberries and red currants with slight spritz on the opening. Soft acids with a slight mineral tinge, tannins are light and perfectly integrated, restrained, focused, very refreshing and drinking smoothly. Will work very well as a summer red with ham, chicken and sharp cheddar. I love the tart red berry and low 12% alc.

As compared to Arbre Verte and Muir, the Hawk's was the crowd favorite. Slightly more rounded and lengthy that the Muir, perhaps due to higher acid?

I've been tasting a number of $50+ PNs lately and most of them were disappointing. I tried hard not to like this one, but it clearly stands out. Even though it initially tasted overripe, with air it became more balanced and more nuanced and complex than many others. Good acidity, long finish, and evolving notes of cherry and spice on the palate. Remarkable and pleasant minerality streak. Much better than, for example, 2012 Soter Pinot Noir Mineral Springs Ranch. Can easily sustain (and improve with) several years of cellaring.
