1998 Hedges Family Estate Syrah Red Mountain

A very pleasant surprise--this wine was stunning at 17 years of age. Still layered, complex and juicy, dense with flavor yet not heavy on the palate, with a lovely chocolate tinged long finish. Bravo to Hedges!

Delicious. Young, massive wine with layers of flavor. Well balanced and thus very approachable. If you have more than one, make sure you enjoy one in it's youth.

Dark red
On the nose, tobacco, stable and red berries.
On the palate, dark fruits, leather, cigar box
medium + finish

Not as "hot" that I thought it would be due to the vintage.

Bought off a store shelf, library release? Anyway, sweet, slightly roasted black cherry fruit, a little volatile, some chocolate, and a hint of olive on the nose. The palate is kind of an odd mix between the slightly roasted chocolate fruit and high acid and plentiful fine tannins that are ripe and not bitter but drying. There's not enough fruit concentration to stand up to the structure. Food helps only a little. It finishes short and tart and drying from the structure. IIRC 2003 was a tough vintage in CA, but this bottle doesn't transcend the vintage conditions.

Great wine. Fabulous nose, delicate at first. Later on , very intense. The palate had herbs, wet saddle , earthy notes, and everpresent minerality. Tannins intact.

Restaurant pop and pour. This needs time in the cellar or time in the decanter. A little stemmy and vegetal, but hinting at some powerful and pretty fruit, blackberry and black currant. Even at present, this is a nice value, could become a remarkable wine.

Wow. Surprised us. This is very good. Lots of complexity. Nicely balanced. I would drink in the next two years or so as I would be surprised if it improved beyond last night's showing.

PnP. Immediately marked by cured meat, smoke, and lifted fruit that leaves the impression of berries. Know this is young, but wanted to gauge one. The way it unfolds with salt, stone, cured meats, and berries is seamless and balanced in the contrast of dark and lighter elements. The acid is quiet and integrated, evolving as slow as the wine is prone to do. Brilliant finish of fine charcuterie and berry preserves that is long. Smashing with thin slices of salami. Lots of time to go on this one, let's see what day two brings.

Still has plenty of time left - I'd say until at least 2017. Well-balanced - depth of flavor and color but there is also just enough acid and the tannins are soft. Roasted cherries (I know, sounds weird) and chocolate notes. Long finish.

Quite a slick offered this one, bright fruit and a stalkiness from the whole bunches which may be polarising for some. It was right on the threshold for me but overall a very easy wine to drink with plenty of interest.

Day 3: White floral nose. Flavors of purple fruits, white flowers and a faint herbal streak that reveals itself on the lingering finish. An elegant adaptation of Syrah that is medium-bodied with ample acid and fine tannins that suggest that this will benefit from medium-term again, though certainly approachable and delicious now.

Relative to my previous tasting from several months ago, this bottle tasted more impressive. Granted this is a very much fruit-forward Syrah (that I am not a big fan of). Conditional on this flamboyant style, however, the wine is well made, with fairly concentrated blueberry and plum fruit, strong tannins, and sufficient acidity (Robert Parker would also say there is plenty of glycerin). The finish is moderate-to-long (and memorable).

Great nose of dust, wood, sap, pine, pepper, warm rocks. Fat fruit on the palate and in the mouth. Strong tannin balanced by equally strong fat, concentrated jam and silky notes. Black and bitter coffee notes swim under tart berries. Finishes with long notes of pepper, spice and mature fruit. All the while, intense yet nicely balanced. A lot going on.

fragrant nose of violets, sandalwood, and cranberries. Medium full body. Dark purple. Concentrated, but not overt, fruit. 12.5% alcohol. Flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and plum. Earthy. Drinking well now, but has some very good aging potential. Well structured tannins and good acidity. Lovely wine.

7/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Tasting at Copain: Second of two syrahs poured at the winery, and a stark contrast in terms of size, structure, and profile to the High Rock Ranch. Compared with a bottle of 2007 JB I opened last month, the fruit seems to be a bit riper and more out front here - fig, currant, and blackberry liqueur along with black licorice, tar, and assorted savory notes resting underneath. Full bodied and powerful with plenty of stuffing and grip.

Tasting at Copain: This was a nice transition from the flight of pinots. First of two syrahs sampled at the winery. Modestly proportioned with juicy dark red fruits, flowers, and a mineral underpinning. Not the most complex or layered syrah in the Copain portfolio, but it demonstrates nice energy and verve.
