2010 Herman Story Syrah Nuts and Bolts

Santa Barbara County more

Splash decant and strained for sediment (mild) ... This is our second to last bottle of this vintage and I can attest it's really singing right now. Smooth as silk, without a hint of heat, despite it's rather imposing ABV. Rich, blue-black fruit to open, but not too primary. Just a little cream (not overly oaky), and tannins are intact, but sweetened somewhat. Still some acid on the backend, with leather, smoke and spice rounding out the flavor profile. A great, big Paso Syrah with some substance and structure. No one makes 'em like Russell at Herman Story!

A little more leathery than I liked out of the gate, but improved with air. Nice wine from Peter and from this vineyard.

Served blind; deep red crimson showing good clarity; vanilla is very strong off the bat, lots of juicy red cherry, silky texture, very red fruit, primary, oak is overpowering though the acid and texture are appealing, settled in Spain due to what seemed to me as a lack of complexity and over manipulated; very surprised once revealed, really like producer though I have had another more recent vintage that performed similarly, always shocked how refined and red fruited this is though the oak is troubling at this stage, give this time.

Walla Walla tastings: Notes of minerality, honey, white peach on the nose. Shows red apple, melon and spice on the palate. Crisp, with a full finish.

Served blind; Darker core; white pepper wows, toasty vanilla, elegant, polished, mix of plush red and dark berry, violets, deep and noble; velvety texture on the palate, good acidity, sweet and sour fruit, similar favors as nose, precise, deep, hedonistic though great focus, more air brought out more texture and mineral in an otherwise seamless and silky wine, great balance; hauntingly good, got craving for it again roughly 30 hours after drinking; a baby-sure-but the integration of the oak and overall juiciness makes this a nice drink now.

Overdone. It's mellowed a bit over the last year or so, but it's still got a long ways to go before it lives up to its full potential.

Very new world in style with an expressive nose of blueish fruit, spice, and pepper. The tannins are drying and slightly astringent. A good wine, but I won't buy it again.

PnP, which was sort of silly, and got a huge dose of monolithic dark fruits. A few hours later and wow has the nose opened up. A little tapenade, some fading flowers. Body is quite full with a thick mouthfeel and a ton of tannin. Finish leaves a bit to be desired at the moment, oddly a bit of alcohol sticks out. Will let the rest of my bottles sleep for a good 5 years until I try another.

At first I thought this was very tart and sour, not what I expected. I stopped drinking and switched to a different bottle. After coming back to it, it was much less sour with an overwhelming coffee nose. It was still slightly tart, but much better. Overall, I still hoped for more, but it improved with some breathing.

Decanted for 2.5 hours. In the glass, starting to shift from dark red to maroon/auburn. On the nose, deep fruit with herbal and wood elements and port-like oxidized notes in the background. On the palate, the fruit and complexity is there, but so is the oxidized note and significant tannins on the mid-palate and the long finish. It's not clear to me that this will ever overcome the wall of tannins, but if it does, it will be something special.

Nice dark ruby color. Restrained nose, with virtually none of the typical Rotie smokiness. On the palate, still plenty of red fruit, a bit tart, with a rather harsh finish. Overall, a bit disjointed and not as good as I was expecting, even given the vintage. Maybe an off bottle.

Bright acidity and cherry fruit. I would love to hold onto one of these (maybe a 2002) and just leave it for another 5 years. These take forever to age.
