Wow, this was accessible right out of the gate. It was actually very fruity and open - not what I associate think of as the house style here, but I love it. Although there's tons of beautiful fruit on the nose and palate, it's still a solidly old world wine - no powdered sugar or cherry cola here. Lots of chewy structure - shows no signs of slowing down despite the "early" vintage.

Recorked in 2014, stunningly fresh and young tasting, with a dollop of cherry, pine, vanilla right in the centre of the palette. Good gourmand experience and a luscious finish. What a treat.

Lelong Lunch (Pine Close): Montille did well in 1997 – this bottle was one of several good Volnay 1er Crus that we have had from the vintage over the past few years. Its nose showed rich aromas of plums and blackberries, with dusty earth and a savoury meatiness, then wafts of dark floral notes and brush herbs curling around the back of the bouquet. Very pleasant. The palate had a pleasing richnes for 1997 1er Cru, with ripe plum and blackberry fruit notes playing against a meaty backdrop. Well balanced and nicely structured, it was drinking nicely on the night. At the finish, the backpalate was dusted with a bit of earth and herb and something vaguely floral that reminded me of violets. A solid, if unspectacular bottle. This was enjoyable.

A beautiful wine showing a high level of acidity and deep, dark fruit. Beautifully aromatic and surprisingly open for a 1999. It held its own on a table with many impressive Burgundies at La Mangeoire.

The 1997 Angerville Taillepieds opens up in the glass to reveal an attractive nose of black cherry, woodsmoke, chocolate and earthy sous bois. On the palate the wine is rich and quite textural, with a very bright core of acidity that really needs a few more years in the cellar to come into balance. While the aromatics are initially rather torrifed they freshen up and comes together appealingly. A pleasure to taste one of Jacques d'Angerville's wines.

This was delicious and impressive over two days. Primary deep red fruits, gentle oak, sexy texture. Old world and new world Pinot lovers will enjoy this.

Very pretty, complex and alluring on the nose, but austere and noticeably green and stemmy on the palate. Showed slightly more strawberry and pomegranate fruit the next day, but still not enough. 2007 was an "off" vintage and this was available at a greatly reduced price ($55) when I purchased it several years ago. Still quite disappointing and further evidence that there are absolutely no bargains to be found anywhere in the Cote-d'Or these days.

This in a really nice spot with a nice mix of still bright red cherry fruit to go with some developing earthy, forest floor. Elegant and well-balanced this is silky smooth and drinking well.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Tasted in 09/02/99 vertical, brief note. Lots of red berry with classically Volnay spice. Very good balance of fruit, spice and structure that still comes across as slightly backward, so don't race and open bottles in the cellar.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Tasted in 09/02/99 vertical, brief note. Red and black berries throughout with a good textural component, but a structural element slightly more firm than I'd prefer at this age.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Tasted in 09/02/99 vertical, brief note. clearly rich and ripe red and black cherry with charming spice. Ripeness nicely balanced with very good acidity, minerality and overall textures. Easy to think it ripe and simple, but this is quietly serious and intense, and my fav of the vertical.

Tonight, after about 4 or 5 hours of double decanting, the was all brooding, rich, penetrating, dark fruit, earth, mushroom and abit of Asian spice with good depth and heft. There's still quite abit of structure present, so I suspect this has a long life ahead of it. Very masculine and quite nice.

Had a blind tasting and drinking of 3 great bottles from Roblet Monnet for dinner with 8 wine friends: the 2011 Volnay St-Francois; 2010 premier cru Volnay Brouillards and 2009 premier cru Volnay Taillepieds. The Saint Francois and the Taillepieds were both very light and complex with bright, but not fruity taste - slight overall preference for the Taillepieds for these two. The Brouillards was much heavier and earthier. The group was split on the Brouillards or the Taillepieds being the favorite. All courses, including cheese for dessert, were taken from food-pinot web sites for pairing.

PDH Offline Berserkers (PDH): For me it was a surprise QPR, nose and taste. Drank well along a very competitive line of PN's at Berserkers offline. Potential PN of the evening. It has years ahead and layers to explore. Great choice (detailed TN to follow)

Starts off with mellow strawberries, plums, mushrooms and undergrowth. Quite tart and drying on the palate, coming across as slightly unclean. Promising concentration and length, but I'm also getting the barest hint of TCA here, and on the whole this bottle seems a bit off.

Pretty on the nose. Subtle, perfumed, balanced, hint of oak. Still very primary.
Lovely balance, grace and finesse on the palate. Very long finish.
Overall, this is really classy. Pretty, great balance. Hard to resist today, but will surely get better with age.

Consumed right after the 99 Courbin and an intersting contrast. Ready to drink with a typical pleasant 08 balance-- none of the rich 09 fruit or 10 chiseled excellence. This is nice light, fruit- forward, faintly elegant rendition, with few layers to plumb and with some floral fruit tones. A hint of lingonberry, cherry, raspberry and flowers but not a star.

At a fine restaurant, this 99 showed impressive weight and concentration but a drying palate that did not improve as the bottle was consumed slowly. A dark brick red center with hints of wood, slightly smokey cherry, hard- core backbone, and a decent finish, but no interesting fruit beyond just enough to balance the acidity. And the winemaking is definitely not D'Angerville despite the nice vineyard.

The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2015 (Colicchio & Sons, New York): After the '99 and '02, this creates an impression of even riper, liqueur-like red fruit without the focus or balance of those wines. Not bad but clearly more loose and diffuse.
