2011 Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30

Syrah more

Classic Northern Rhone stinkiness (not too much) on the nose is inviting. It has pleasant dryness and good acidity with high toned blackberries, game, and gentle curry spices. Really light on its feet, this should be great with food. It is old world in style.

2010 Domaine Durand Cornas Premices

Syrah more

5/16/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

Coming across as modern in style, Durand's 2010 Cornas exhibits gobs of dark fruit with sweet tannins. Classic Northern Rhone animal funk is detectable on the nose, but it easily gets buried in wine’s rich fruitiness. This young Cornas shows freshness that is elevated by its pine tree forest note.
Many solid underlying elements are apparent, yet they don't mold together in harmony, perhaps due to the young age of the wine or the warm weather, so the judgment is reserved for now. My next bottle may turn out to be 91-93 points quality, but I will not bet on it for at least three years.

Lemon oil, tropical fruits, shrimp shell, and ocean breeze flavors are joined by flintiness on the finish. Overall, this is an acidic white meant to be consumed with food.

1997 Clos Pegase Merlot

Carneros more

5/2/2015 - Number51 wrote: 89 points

1997 Clos Pegase Merlot reminds me of the right bank. If served blind, I’m not sure if I would have guessed California. It is quite aromatic and certainly not too oaky with lingering tones of cedar, blackberries, cassis, and leather.
Its level of balsamic note suggests that this needs no further aging. I wouldn’t want that level to get any higher.

2011 Domaine Cabirau Maury Sec Serge & Nicolas

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

4/29/2015 - Number51 wrote: NR

Dark fruited, rich, and jammy, 2011 Maury Sec boasts of its purity. Its chalkiness is interestingly followed by a hint of peat smoke. As the wine opens up in the glass, Haribo gummy bear notes show up. It is good, but it kind of punches you in the face with fruit, for which I find it tough to drink the whole bottle, personally.

Right out of the bottle, there is that funky Burgundian cheese on the nose. Raspberries, strawberry jam, jolly rancher, hay, and lovely floral notes are making me happy.
Assessing this wine for the 3rd time here, I’m again standing by my original score of 91.

Very oaky, creamy, well aged, and a bit salty, 1996 Cerneros Merlot is a pleasing effort. Milk chocolate, ripe plum, sugared blackberries, crepes cake, and sea salt make an appearance.

This appears a bit oxidized and has a sour edge to it, which I’m not enjoying all that much. It is a bit Bordeaux like, and it goes well with food. Sour cherries, cassis, tar, and pepper notes are pleasing.
I like the style of the wine, but I don’t like the balance of it.
I’m thinking 87 points.

A very complex nose right off the bat, oh yes.
Gooseberries, cranberries, kiwis, bee pollen, and fresh herbs flavors are just awesome.
Lots of light flavors come through, and the wine is never heavy. No Burgundian dirt/earth/fart here, it is a clean fruit. 12.7% alc lets you gulp this down. This is a really lovely wine.

2013 Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay

4/15/2015 - Number51 wrote: 90 points

If you were to teach a wine class and pick a chardonnay from California that best represents the region's well known rich, oaky, and buttery style, Rombauer would be a good example. With its hefty alcohol at 14.6%, it is rich with tropical fruits. Pineapple, mango, banana, bourbon, salted roasted nuts, and white pepper notes show in this wine with much weight. However, I sense a bit of heaviness, which is stopping me from scoring this higher.

After 30 minutes of aeration, vitamin c and rusty nail notes, which I’m not very fond of, start to calm down, and raisiny fruit comes forward. There are notes of blackberries, prunes, tar, and low-rye bourbon. I didn’t know what to expect from a 17 years old zinfandel, but it is pleasing, although I wish the rusty nail note was less prevalent. 13.9% alc

This is a sweet easy drinking pinot. Cherries, cola, root beer, and very subtle pinot funk come through. It’s a bit too new world with too much cola component for my taste. Trying to score this objectively, I'd say 88~89 points.

1980 Rutherford Hill Merlot

Napa Valley more

4/11/2015 - Number51 wrote: 88 points

Needless to say, this Napa merlot is mature and tastes aged, but it isn’t over the hill although I wouldn’t age it any further.
Cooked cherries, cedar, sweet balsamic vinegar, and rusty nails emerge from the glass. With aeration, rusty nail component becomes more pronounced, perhaps a bit too much.
If you’d like to experience an old wine without getting a loan, this may be worth a try. You'd need a special corkscrew to pull out the cork in one piece. It was $20 at K&L.

2009 Domaine de Fondrèche Ventoux Persia

Red Rhone Blend more

4/9/2015 - Number51 wrote: 92 points

2009 Persia has a stinky nose like its older siblings, 2005 and 2006. Cow manure, horse manure, and some other species’ manure notes are just brilliant on the nose. Don’t be afraid to taste it. Either I’m not tasting manure or I don’t know what manure tastes like, but there are some nice dark fruits, pepper, beef jerky, and roasted herbs on the palate. It is deceptively medium bodied with well polished tannins although it’s packed with a lot of wine. As this beautiful Cotes du Ventoux blossoms with aeration, it becomes fuller in body. There is no sharp acidity here, so you can drink this on its own. It is well balanced.
I’m not sure if the stinkiness is fading over time, or if I’m getting used to the smell. Having tried two prior vintages, 2005 and 2006 about 5 years ago, which I also found to be quite stinky, I’m having a pretty consistent experience from this producer. I love it.

Candied plums, skittles, cassis, roses, gentle spices, and citrus infused toffee flavors are balanced beautifully by a good amount of acidity. While this is aromatically bombastic and very new world in style, there is a sense of gracefulness that is achieved by its silky texture.
There is no earthiness in sight. This is 100% new world. As long as you can appreciate such style of wine, you will like this. 14.4% alc

This is pretty good. It is worth the money, and I’m happy with the purchase.
It’s my first time trying an Irish whiskey besides the basic Jameson, which I thought was just a rubbing alcohol. I guess it’s the triple distillation thing - there is some phenomenal pureness in the glass. Spring water, purified sugar, light sherry, caramel, and candied ginger notes come through. This may sound odd, but I’m tasting few drops of grappa in this whiskey.
If you’re into smoothness, this whiskey is for you.

Big fruit jam on the nose makes me crave peanut butter. On the palate, it offers ripe blackberries, raspberries, cherries, and chalk powder. It is pleasing yet a bit simple right now. Perhaps, as the fruit retreats over the years, it’ll develop more complexity.
It's just too jammy for my taste to give it 90 points.

This is a total no brainer at $25. With its 50% alc, it is effectively $20.
Fresh peat, sweet pear, acacia honey, smoke, and earth components come through in this well balanced young spirit.
Don't expect it to taste like a good $80 Scotch, but it sure beats many basic single malts, even some in $50 to $60 range.
K&L spirits buyers got some serious talent.
