Fantastic. An explosion of "acasie" honey, abricot, melon and paire confit. The was an expression of kerosine (petroleum). Taste of nice sweetened lemons, raisins and orange peel. A very good wine indeed. Paid Eur 14 in an expensive shop; worth every cent.

2001 Château Kirwan

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/16/2012 - ChiefNose Likes this wine: 94 points

Tasted directly after the Domaine de la vieille Julienne 2001 VV - a 15,5% powerful wine which took 3 hours to understand.

Nose: BACK, nicely BACK from the Rhônevalley to good old Bordeaux: leadpencil, blackcurrant (not kirsch), forest, elegant sweetness and very nice ginger jam (??).

Taste: I don't know what to say; just Margaux. It's properly money wise 5:1 on the Julienne, but I'll take this one in respect of the money. Cassis, cassis cassis. Pickling nice gentle tannins. I'll guess this is underrated, but I'll give it a good 94 points. Prob. 92 on a bad day at work, but today...
just……VERY nice Bordeaux; taste does follow the nose to perfection.

And the aftertaste: Loooong. Must Buy

PS! If I rate another wine tonight, don't pay any attention to it; I will be drunk at that time.

Directly from the cellar at 11 degrees Celsius (60 Fahrenheit??), opened and tasted.

Colour almost black, no red/brown edges here, very potent. At 15,5% alc. maybe it keeps the process down - I donno - but first impression: Nose: WHOA turn down that alcohol! Strong, almost like biking in the Spey-area. Not pleasant; kirsch all over (try the Péby Faugerès 05 for the perfect balance) and a bit sticky. Taste a bit strange; one side watery the other full of alc., cherries and wood, odd really….

1 hour later, and at a more pleasant temperature:

The alcoholic nose has been wiped off "sorta" (as soon as you pour some more, the alcohol strikes back). Much more complex, now you will find pine tree, blackberries,. Taste has improved as well but still a strange watery tone - and with this concentration?

I'll be back in an hour:

and now it's enjoyable, alcohol going down - or get's blown away - still a watery tone on the palette; it's not my kind of C9dP, but absolutely not bad, Think I'm more of a Avril-kind-of-guy. The long aftertaste saves the wine.

Oups: 1 hour later again: This wine just needs time; I was not happy at first, but now (after finished the meal of course) it's a little beauty. More elegant than at first (what a surprise), much more elegant. Up from a 93 to 95; and a I like this!

Ooups: Promise this is last edit; but 2 hours later: I can taste wine after 2 minutes; It's "weltklasse"! Up to 98 points.

PS! Had it to Confit de Canard, so the food was potent enough to take the wine home.

Openeded and tasted yesterday evening; not much pleasure there. After a night in the fridge with the cork back in, it opened BIG TIME.

Teglbrown/reddish on the edge, beautiful aromas of dades, plums and cedertree.

Full, rich smooth with nice round tannins, a aftertaste that keeps coming back. Dried berries with a peppery finish. It's a litte beauty, and it cost's less than USD 16 ex. vat.

Taste elegant cherries, (am in the spirit writing this one) much better than expectet - from the previous reviews in mind - and a bit watery. Not concentreted enougn

I got this wine total wrong, placed it in Rhône or Napa (and a Merlot, shame shame) - it's hard to blindtaste. It's opulent, sweet, round - it's Tempranillo it's meditation. Very nice tannins, loads of dark berries and cassis.

Fine, tiny bobbles keeps coming, in the nose it's a bit too much yeast, very refreshing and popular style. Get's better 1 hour after opening - but who can look at Champagne for a whole hour?
