2004 Bernard Brémont Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

Champagne Blend more

Characteristic scents of petals, toast and citric fruit. What is unique in this champagne, in my tasting experience, is the pronounced and very distinct dark chocolate-- with undertones of coffee and burnt nuts-- on the palate. These flavors overwhelm the more delicate citric and may not be to everyone's taste. For me, it took the concept of "toastiness" to a new level and made for a very interesting champagne.

Grape must, barn funk and acidity lacking harmony or balance. Opaque and viscous. All suggest this one was flawed or past its prime.

Not bad, just a bit thin and humdrum. Still surprisingly tannic at this stage, though doesn't look likely to improve further.

Savored alongside roast beef and shitake risotto with our friends Carla, Luciana, Renato and Antonio. Decanted just before drinking but, surprisingly, was fresh and focused right out of the bottle. As friends noted, decanting was perhaps overkill. Very much in the Cali cab tradition, with aromas of dark chocolate and coffee and plenty of oak.

Unctuous, honey layered with apricot. Less citric on the mouth than the 2003. Still, superb.

My friend Philipe Vana brought this on a breezy but warm summer night and it quite simply astounded. Capacious amounts of citric fruit and pineapple with hints of honey and vanilla oak. On par with the other outstanding white I drank over the years, Far Niente Chardonnay. Superb.

This was a joy to taste in a blind champagne tasting among friends; nose bursting with cider, pear, citric and any number of fruit essences making up complex structure. Flower petals and some bread on the mouth, but subtle. Smooth, elegant and refreshing on the mouth. In a night that included a Krug and D. Perignon, this was my pick for WOTN.

In blind tasting that included D. Perignon 2004 and Cristal 2005, this was the winner by most accounts. Beautiful gold hue. Very pronounced brioche, baguette on the mouth. Dry and austere, especially compared to the more fruity Cristal.

In a night that included an Amarone and big Napa Cab this was considered, perhaps unfairly, lackluster. Muted nose with hints of flower petals. Friends claimed to detect oak and vanilla. Medium bodied, mineral and slightly acidic on the mouth. Smooth and subtly elegant, perhaps overshadowed by its more potent brethren.

As expected, potent, unctuous and port-like. Molasses, coffee and berries. Although this almost passes for a dessert wine, I did not find it overly sweet or cloying. In a tasting night that included Brunello and a Napa Cab, this was the big crowd pleaser.

Popped and poured this beauty accompanied by rib-eye steak. Expected this to be archetypical big Napa cab and was not disappointed. The aroma alone will smack you in the face with jammy red fruit, tobacco spice (one taster was reminded of smell of blood!) Almost as powerful in the mouth and very unctuous, with similar strains of spice, leather, tobacco. For me, not quite as remarkable as Caymus SS, but same league. Some in our party found it too intense. With steak, however, it meshed beautifully.

Purchased at Stag's Leap winery, Napa. Herbs, stew, menthol, must on the nose. Tobacco and leather on the mouth. Distinctly Bordeaux (as opposed to Fay, which is heavily tilted towards oak and vanilla) Smooth. Drinking well now.

Superb, well-rounded and elegant wine in the style of Bordeaux. The nose is musty and vegetal. On the mouth it is balanced and silky, with notes of oak, vanilla and red fruit subtly mixed. No trace of overwrought fruit or alcohol so typical of South Americans.

Probably should have given this a few more hours in the decanter but, as it was, not overly impressed. Nose muted, mouth dry and tightly wound. Could just about make out notes of coffee and dark chocolate-- as well as grape must-- but seemed off kilter and lacking balance. In fairness, others enjoyed this way more than I did so the fault could lie with the taster.

Inky black and full of sediment. Decanted for a couple of hours, but still tightly wound and concentrated. Tasted this 10 years ago and was highly impressed by its powerful concoction of fruit, wood and syroupy licquer (admittedly, I was much more into 'Rollandesque' fruit bombs at the time). Now, lots of wood, tannin, alcohol... and little else. Someone here suggested it may be going through a dumb phase. That may indeed be the case. Probably needs another 5 years in the cellar. Or, has simply failed live up to expectations.

Had this with roasted rumpsteak, admittedly not the most appropriate of pairings. Once it opened up-- about 2hrs after popping-- dark chocolate, coffee and spice effluences revealed themselves to the nose. Somewhat subdued on the mouth.
