Beautiful, complex, old-fashioned Kabinett. light and airy, understated peachfruit, fabulous minerality and a typical earthy, gravelly, hearty soy-like complexity. Resolving residual sweetness and tiptoe-ing acidity provide exceptional balance and finesse. Alas, ultra-traditional wines like these are getting very rare. Last bottle from my stash... :(

Gorgeous Syrah, very true-to-type. juicy, brambly fruit, black pepper, new-world-like, but not overdone. Well balanced, great length, concentration and mouthfeel.

Wonderful, classic, yeasty nose. I also pick up nuances of almondpaste, gravel, miso, mushroom, seaweed and lemon peel. Alas, on the palate this lacks tension and complexity, and the finish is clipped. This is a step back from their gorgeous 2002 millésime. Nose 92, palate 86.

Has been one of the ugly ducklings in GCC-country for a while now, but based on this example I must plea unguilty... Bright, fresh, crunchy red fruit, cigar, cedar, smoke, graphite, some cassis in the back, wonderful roasted red pepper. Very nice mid-weight, typical Left-banker. Although not very deep or long, there is lovely purity and plenty of fun. Tasty!

Bright, vibrant nose, kirsch and blueberry pancakes. On the palate there's great cherry fruit, dark plums, touches of ink and mocca. Big wine, still young, not too hot of heavy.

Very awkward nose of strawberries, pineapple and gooseberries... Low acidity on the palate, sweetish and muddled. Bitter bananapeel-notes on the fisnish, some fresh green herbal action, too. Don't know what to think of this wine... Disharmonious.

This was not a very good bottle. Had better ones. Clearly showing its age. In decline.
Still drinkable though, lemoncurd, vanillapod, lime juice, metallic aftertaste. Was probably a great bottle 5 years ago.

Mandarin Napoleon, roasted nuts, white sultanans, rusty nails. Still drinkable, but oxidative notes are marring this wine AND my faith in the ageing capabilities of these White Rhone-wines.. Some of them are profound, but most are oxidised, dormant, corked or otherwise suboptimal...
What a pity... Not my lucky day, vinously speaking.

Ahhh.... this is my kind of Chateauneuf. Plenty of elegance, no cooked fruit nor esctraction! A bright, fresh, transparent, ariy bouquet (full of funk, red cherry, dried herbs, touches of mocca and kirsch) is creeping up my flu-infrected nostrils. Beautiful, harmonious, old-fashioned palate oozes the good-life: hot terracotta tiles, dry lavender branches, black olives, tomato tapenae, grilled paprika, lambchops on the BBQ. Wishing I was right there....

Italian night @ Stappato (Enoteca Stappato, Leuven (Belgium)): Don't know about the 'Stravecchio', couldn't find that on the bottle. This was G. Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 1945.

And it was completely deceased, alas. Cloudy dark yellow colour, like an old white wine. Reeked of ammonia, methylated spirit. At first I didn't have the guts to taste it... In the end I did, and I shouldn't have done that. Guess this is what vitriol tastes like..

Italian night @ Stappato (Enoteca Stappato, Leuven (Belgium)): Adored the dried fruit component of this wine, which makes the bouquet and palate really ripe, luxurious and complex, but doesn't make a very sweet impression. It's hearty, has a hint of luscious sweetness and hides its alcohol very well. Really excellent and unique.

Italian night @ Stappato (Enoteca Stappato, Leuven (Belgium)): This charred pinot-nose reminded me of several Spätburgunders I had in the last few years. The bright red fruited core is covered by that pine wood/fireplace/charcoal kind of topping, that I find a tad heavy and overdone most of the time. A good wine, nevertheless.

Italian night @ Stappato (Enoteca Stappato, Leuven (Belgium)): Bright, juicy and brambly, leaping out of the glass. Wonderful spicy seasoning, sensible use of oak. Good length, clean finish. Modern presentation, found the mid-palate quite svelte and elegant for such an Ornellaia, which added to the very drinkable and generous impression this wine gave me.

Italian night @ Stappato (Enoteca Stappato, Leuven (Belgium)): Massive wine. Coffee, mocca, asian spice, black macerated fruit. Huge, impressive concentration, densely packed, almost clogged... I like my wines a little more transparant, elegant and focussed. But in it's modern, international, extracted niche, this is a very good wine.
