Decanted at cellar temp for 2 hours prior to tasting. Dominant lemon rind and lime zest on the nose, with plenty of green apple, crushed sea shells, white flowers, light stone fruits, with some toasted oak lingering in the background. Great nose that's so crisp and citrus-y it almost makes your eyes water. Tons more lemon oil and lime zest follow through on the palate, with tart green apple, white peach, and charred wood. Plenty of saline and crushed limestone dances across the palate, with lively tongue numbing acidity coating the tongue on the finish. There's definitely some oak floating around here but it's not obtrusive, and will surely integrate with some more time in bottle. Delicious now but what a bright future this has in front of it. Fantastic-

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Decanted for 3 hours. Super spicy on the nose showing plenty of baking spices, clove, and black pepper. Softer with more sweetness on the palate, with rich black cherries and tons more clove spice towards the back end. Gripping palate, spicy and delicious. A nice cap to the evening. No rush to drink these up. Good+

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Surprisingly mature on the nose, showing classic left bank profile with tons of graphite, black currants, and cedar. Shows plenty more lead pencil on the palate, along with cassis, leather, and bright red cherries shining through on the finish. While there was still lots of structure left in the tank this was surprisingly advanced and mature considering it's age. Definitely showing the most secondary notes of the 2004's tasted this evening. Delicious but i'd be a bit concerned if this bottle was a good example of where this wine is at right now. Very good+

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Rich nose showing bright black cherries, plenty of spice, and a touch of fresh mint. More black cherries on the palate, along with some tart red currants, mint and clove spice. A bit soft but drinking well already. It wasn't fair to serve this along side the Pichon Lalande and Ducru as this was enjoyable but clearly overshadowed by the other wines in the flight. Good+

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Very lean and reserved on the nose at this point in time showing rich red cherries, blue berries, and some nice floral notes. Quite tart at the forefront of the palate, displaying red cherries, cranberries, and sharp red currants. This was really tightly wound and not very giving on this night, and in need of plenty of time in the cellar. Put these away and leave them for at least 5 years as the potential is there. Very good

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Best nose by far of the flight showing high toned black and blue berries, along with black cherries in the background and plenty of floral notes. Quite rich on the palate displaying black cherries, tons of mint and plenty of floral notes finishing with tart red currants. There's a nice sweetness to the palate and this really has all the components but definitely is in need of more time in the cellar. My favorite of the flight. Very good

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): This bottle had a bit of an odd vitamin c note on the nose, along with some cherry liqueur and licorice. More vitamin on the palate, along with some with red cherries, herbal mint, dark fruits, with some spice peeking through on the finish. Overall this was quite drying and astringent, but I didn't enjoy the profile of the nose. This bottle couldn't have been an accurate representation but I'll rate my experience with it anyways. Good-

More rich black cherries on the palate, along with tart black currants, tons of spice, with coffee and oak lingering on the finish. Overall quite firm and tight at this stage, with strong underlying tension. This needs some time. Very good-

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Huge nose showing tons of coffee, charred oak with gobs of rich dark black fruit and black berries. This showed a touch tarter on the palate, with more coffee grounds, black cherries, and tart ripe blackberries. Tons of oak dominates at this stage, however there is tons of power and tension hiding behind so hopefully with some time in the bottles this will integrate. Overall not my style and overdone for my palate. Good+

Commanderie de Bordeaux: 2004 Horizontal (Market at Shangri-La - Vancouver, BC): Tight on the nose showing more towards the red fruit side of the spectrum compared to the others in this flight. Some graphite and cedar peeking through but more in the background, along with a hint of fresh mint. More red cherries on the palate, as well as some light lead pencil, tart black currants, and some tar towards the back end. Less intensity, more tart, and lighter overall than the Alter Ego de Palmer. Very good-

Still quite tight and reserved despite the 2 hour decant. Classic left bank on the palate with tons of lead pencil and crunchy black currants. Richer and darker on the palate than the nose, but not overdone. Fairly tight overall but this was delicious and already showing well. My favorite of the flight. Very good+

Birthday Dinner (Bishop's - Vancouver, BC): Slow ox'd for 6 hours then decanted 30mins before serving. What a nose, showing incredible richness and concentration. One would surely guess younger than this was, showing tons of graphite lead pencil, rich dark black fruits, shoe leather, cassis, cedar, muddled fresh mint, and plenty of clove spice. Delicious and mouth coating on the palate, with plenty more graphite and cedar coming through, along with some rich sweet dark berries, black cherries, leather, cigar box, plenty of spice, and a huge kick of menthol towards the back end. Gripping, rich, concentrated, backed by plenty of acidity and superb balance. Velvety in texture, this is flirting with perfection. The high scores here are certainly justified. It's amazing how youthful this is showing, I can't wait to see where these are headed with some more bottle time. Outstanding +

Birthday Dinner (Bishop's - Vancouver, BC): Picked this up in April when in Burgundy. Never heard of this producer and no idea of the grape source but colour and fill looked great so figured it was worth rolling the dice on. Surprisingly great nose showing tons of bright red fruit and boysenberry, along with some black pepper spice, a dark cherry undertone, and a hint of anise. The palate was a bit flat and underwhelming, showing more boysenberry, black raspberries, and plenty of rich black cherries. The fell off a bit on the back end with a short finish and lacked acidity, but wasn't dead by any means. Pleasant, but nothing special. Enjoyable more for sentimental reasons than anything else. Very good-

Birthday Dinner (Bishop's - Vancouver, BC): Mature and quite expressive on the nose showing tons of rich salty caramel, yeast, baked green apple, ginger spice, and a touch of lemon juice. Toast, yeast, and rich toffee on the palate, with baked green apple skins, candied ginger, followed by a light lemon zest cut on the end of the palate. This bottle didn't have a ton of bubbles left, but was fully mature and a delicious start to the evening. Lacks the acidity of the top vintages, but wasn't void of acidity. No need to age these any longer, drink up and enjoy. Very good+

More ripe red cherries on the palate, along with some mint, prune, and black plums. Not bad, but rather muddy and flat overall. Great nose but a bit of a disappointment on the palate. However this was still fairly tight and it could blossom, but I wouldn't bet on it getting that much better. Good+

Confrerie Chapitre De Vigne En Fleur (The French Table Bistro - Vancouver, BC): Quite tight on the nose at present showing some spicy black pepper spice and dilute black cherry fruit. Much more open and expressive on the palate, displaying funky black cherry fruit and black pepper spice, along with some mint leaves, violet, a touch of prunes, and black currants. Quite minty on the finish which almost showed a bit leafy. This really was a case of polar opposites, with the nose shut down and hiding and the palate coming out to play and showing it's stuff. Could use a few years. Very good

Rich bright black cherry and dark currants explode on the palate, with some baking spice, dust, and crayons. More energy and youth showing on the palate, with tons of acid and sandy tannins. Still quite young on the palate, and even though the nose shows some maturity I'd give this a couple years. Very good+

Confrerie Chapitre De Vigne En Fleur (The French Table Bistro - Vancouver, BC): This had a fair bit more fruit expression and less earth than the '96 Brunelle tasted along side, with tart pomegranate, some skunk, bright red cherries and sharp currants with tons of dust on the nose. Plenty of red cherry and spice on the palate, along with a hint of menthol and some dark black currants. Tons of acid with firm tannins, this still has plenty of time left in the tank. Quite clean on the palate but a touch flat and lacking that excitement that would put it into the next level. Very good

Great acidity on the finish, with nice richness and balance. Still vibrant acidity but this is getting towards the end of it's window. No reason to wait any longer on these. Very good

Confrerie Chapitre De Vigne En Fleur (The French Table Bistro - Vancouver, BC): Quite tight on the nose at first showing a restrained expression of damp must and soft pinot fruit, along with a touch of earth and spice. Ripe oxidized pear comes through on the palate, along with some red apple skins, ripe strawberries, caramel, soft cherry pinot fruit, and a nice kick of spice towards the back end of the palate. With time the nose explodes with soft butterscotch but not in an oxidized way. This is an interesting expression of pinot, but it seems to be getting towards the end of its life. Drink up. Good+
