2008 Cayuse Tempranillo Impulsivo En Chamberlin Vineyard

Walla Walla Valley more

This is a bigass wine plain and simple. Deep dark fruit yet deftly balanced. Regardless, there is a hearty backbone here not usually found with Washington Tempranillos.

This is really quite a treat after all these years. The nose smells of earth and dirt with a hint of dark cherry on the netherland of the palate. There is no funk for me here but it does have the classic flavor profile of dark licorice, hints of olive and briar. Yummy.

2008 Cayuse Syrah Bionic Frog

Walla Walla Valley more

7/12/2015 - Radboy wrote: 94 points

Not as bold as some other vintages, this is a medium bodied froggy. The typical brine and olives are more subdued but still nicely balanced and approachable. It does appear to be an early drinker.

Dark amber in color with nice, gentl caramel and subtle floral fruit. Almost a bit nutty on the finish with little sweetness.

Drinking quite well with a feminine nose and excellent mouthfeel. Quite popular among the winos we had over for dinner and held up well with some other more expensive wines.

2006 Charles Smith Syrah Royal City

Columbia Valley more

6/6/2015 - Radboy wrote: 92 points

This is holding up well. This is a good, not a great wine. We tasted it alongside a Reynvaan The Contender and Cayuse En Cerise and the lack of complexity in the Royal City was revealed. The fruit is tightly defined and certainly bold but there isn't much here in terms of secondary characteristics. Still, it is a good wine that seems to be in the middle of its drinking window.

Subtle hints of mushroom initially in the nose give way to berry fruit with a medium to light body. This is not a big boy but rather delicate in structure and far from overbearing. This should drink well over the next year or two and lacks the stuffing to go long term. Then again, 19 years is pretty damn good!

We drank this over 3 days and it definitely was better after additional time opened, suggesting much greater life. Apricots, caramel, honey and creme brulee with perfectly nuanced botrytis. It is hard to ask for much more...except an even better year! Spectacular wine to sip and dwell on life's simple pleasures.
