1998 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate

Napa Valley more

At Musso & Frank's: Excellent shape, ripe dark cassis softening up with a bit of caramel, underbrush, shrooms. Oak is just a little over present in this however--probably at the height/in the era of excessive oak use in Napa cabs? Still, excellent balance, silky, dark roasted notes, perfect with prime rib. I was afraid of the '98 vintage but in recent years I've had quite a few good '98 cabs, whereas the '97's have taken somewhat of a dive.

At Musso & Frank's: Lovely pure orchard fruit with good spine of rocky minerality and just a light smack of ripe california fruit and hints of tropical notes. Really well balanced, well integrated oak, moderately creamy mouthfeel, excellent depth and great overall. Glad I still have 2 left. try again in a year or 2. 93?

Very good. Showing a little age, supple, but great structure, earthiness, spices, complexity with well-integrated oak notes of cedar and slight baking spices. Great bridge between ripe CA fruit and a Bordeaux, but clearly in the NW camp.

This opened up very nicely with dried apricot, red apple, a touch of honey and light walnuts; mouth is nice and creamy and yogurty, with a fairly rich body and moderate plus acid, soft and caressing in the attack, but more spine in the back end. Very nice, not especially complex, but lovely mouthfeel and finish. Showing some age for sure, but holding up nicely--but this is ready now. I would not expect this to improve much.

Very aromatic with slight caramel (some new oak), melon, gravel, red-green apples; ripe, voluptuous, slight reductive quality, tons of flavor on the palate. Really nice, intense, but maybe slightly over-oaked.

Really nice--in a great place; dried cherry with dried leaves and slightly sweet core of fruit left; pot pouri, red fruit impressions; silky, tannins almost all resolved but still slight grip present. Lovely and perfumed. From magnum, with Rib eye steak with family in Palm Desert.

Sweaty leather, truffle, underbrush, cassis and blackberry underneath with smoke and dark cherry--a haunting perfumey musk; rich, somewhat creamy. slightly soft textured; long finish with granite minerality. Clearly some good pedigree/winemaking going on here, even if it is a bit Modern in style. Liked it better this round with a whole bottle at my disposal.

This was a bit strong on the tobacco and green pepper note, but still quite lovely with tart blackberry, cassis, moss, crushed granite/gravel notes; Silky, pure as always, but not even close to 2009/2010.

Apples, apple pie, caramel apple. You get the picture. Add in yellow peach and tropical guava notes--this is very fruity, very ripe. Rich, heavy on the palate with a creamy feel and lower acidity. Very viscous and even a touch sweet. If like your fruit rich and pure and decadent, this wines for you. I bit overblown for my tastes but quite hedonistic.

Pineapple juice, ripe pear syrup, notes of fruit cocktail and a hint of ripe apple and caramel; ripe attack than the Lauren with great structure--dry extract (light tannins), medium hefty body but carries the heat very well, the glycerin almost blanketing the high alcohol making it less hot on the palate. It also has excellent acidity, and a long tangy powerful finish. Much riper than the Lauren, not as overblown as Sugar Shack, and a great wine for sure.

Lovely more restrained pear, peach and nectarine notes with light floral-jasmine and lemon curd; ripe but not over-ripe, balanced, medium (+) weight, and a nice minerality of wet rocks; Where's the high alcohol very well. A clean, crisp, mineral coastal wine (at least that's how it shows after the Napa wines). Never cared for the big Aubert wines--until now.

This is nice and juicy, with black and blue fruits, a sweet black licorice note (but completely dry). It has a touch of wild juicy character and very cool yet complex character. Not a big wine, but jsut perfectly blended and balanced. Great value. CS, M, Dornfelder, PM, Port. 88+
