2003 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

8/13/2012 - Personal Opinion wrote: NR

Focused aromas and flavors of dried tropical fruits, dried pineapple, banana and mango, mix with layers of bakers spice, butter, nuts and vanilla. Delicious, just not the complete package texturally, something is missing in the mid-palate or overall finish. I think it is lacking in the acid department... giving it only a soft, medium finish. Enjoyable Riesling nuances, minus the high acid structure. Probably best to drink sooner then later.

Another example of the cooler 2010 vintage... Leaner and structured upon opening... Dusty, ripe strawberry, creamy vanilla and mild cedar, intermingled with subtle herbs.... Medium-medium-plus bodied, with solid acid backbone... needs time to flesh out... most enjoyable on day 3... only becoming creamier, rounder and softer with time, while still retaining a freshness of ripe, dark, red fruit... a good candidate for time in the cellar... in fact, I would recommend it. Good QPR. Just needs time.

Pure, dark fruit, with overtones of iron, pepper, herbs, spice, dried scrub brush. Lean, medium bodied, with solid acid and good texture. No evident use of heavy oak. Simply pure, dark, spicy fruit. Enjoyable and a great match with herb pork sausage. If served blind, I would think this was a Southern Rhone of some type. Cheers.

8/2/2012 - Personal Opinion wrote: NR

Consistent with 2009 stylistically... lean, higher acid Syrah, with simple, pure fruit aromas and flavors... Transparent, tart, blue and black fruit and mineral, with creamy vanilla nuances intertwined. Medium bodied, little tannin. Would be nice to see how the acid structure develops/softens in 3-5+ years. A good food wine, as the focus seems to be about pure fruit and high-altitude acid structure.

Opened with heavy overtones of waxy vanilla... Needed a 2 hour decant to really hit it's stride... Then.. Classic RRV Pinot profile... Simply delicious... Fruit-forward, displaying ripe, baked, black cherries and cola, intermingled with licorice, vanilla and cedar.. Smooth and bold... balanced acid... Paired well with unique summer squash/quinoa/toasted walnut/parmesan/lime/basil dressing dish... Definitely enjoyable now, though still youthful... No need to age IMO.. A delicious California Pinot now.

Drinking well.. seems to have softened a bit in the last 3 years... Still the pronounced overtone of warm honey, bee pollen and florals dominating the nose, with complex layers of ripe, black cherries, licorice, spice, leather and tar lingering just beneath the surface. As delicious as I remembered... Medium-medium-plus body, with a coating mouth-feel, soft, integrated tannins and solid acidity... with a lingering finish of honey, bee pollen, florals, leather and ripe, black cherries... Yum! Simply beautiful... Elegant, mineral laced dark, ripe, red fruit, with layers of florals, black pepper, anise and exotic, ground spices... Medium body, with dusty, dry tannins and a juicy acidity... No slouch in the structure department... Drinkable now, though would be interesting to follow this wine for 5 years or so... The 33% Carignan included in this wine is evident and pronounced. I love it!!! Classic Roussillon... Yum!!! Great QPR!

Needed about 2-3 hours to really open up and flesh out nicely... Layers of dark, ripe fruit, mineral and iron dominate the profile. Big, rich and full-bodied, with mild, dusty tannins, medium-low acidity and balanced alcohol for size. Good QPR. Wonderfully lush texture after 3+ hours, so be patient at this time... Simple, yet very satisfying for the Rhone Ranger. A good drink now, that will likely last for 3+ more years if needed..

I was a huge fan of the 2009, though now unsure about the 2010 vintage. It open with aromas and flavors reminiscent of a light, inexpensive Chilean Cab... with pronounced green nuances :( After two hours, some ripe fruit did emerge, though the green earthy component still lingered in the background. Maybe it's just going through a phase or this bottle is off... the texture was pleasant, with medium body, balanced acid and light, dusty tannins... very different from the 2009... just my opinion though, maybe some will like this better... I'm undecided at this point... time will tell... maybe it just needs some serious air to come together at this point? ... the last glass was best, with mineral and lead pencil emerging...

Deep golden yellow color. Needed a little time to come together... and was much better just below room temperature... though after about 2 hour hours, the nose and palate were defined by serious toasted popcorn, macadamia nuts, nut oil, and honey... with nuances of over-ripe stonefruit, white flowers and honeysuckle lingering in the finish... Rich on the plate, with a round, supple, mouth-coating viscosity, good acidity, and long finish. I was a bit concerned at first, believing this was over the hill, though it came together nicely after getting some air... definitely not for those who despise the extroverted use of new oak and ripe fruit... My final thought is that this is one ultra-rich, ultra-ripe California Chardonnay, with tons of nutty personality. Nothing to complain about.. pair with richly flavored dishes...

Enjoyed over 4 hours... ready to go... aromas and flavors seem to be integrating... nuances of smoke, savory dill pickle, herbs, sarsaparilla root, and ripe, red fruit, combine to create an interesting California Pinot... Medium bodied, with driving acidity... medium-plus finish... a good food wine... I enjoyed it with a soy/ginger/garlic/onion/toasted sesame oil/olive oil marinated Albacore Tuna steak... paired nicely. I imagine it will drink well for a few more years, though it is drinking well now, and didn't show dramatic development/change from start to finish; though I would recommend a 2 hour decant. I agree with 2010 Wine Library review. Good juice. Enjoy now.

Ripe fruited and structured. High alcohol detracts from pleasantries, making it a wine for bolder flavors, such as steak, etc... Overall though, ripe, dark fruit, cedar and spice dominate the wine. Rather simple and straightforward. Best during the first couple hours of being open, seeming to become unbalanced by nights end. Meh. Glad I only had one.

Still alive and kickin'... and not shy... after 8 hours of being open, aromas of cola, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, cedar and hints of olive tapenade dominate the nose, with BIG flavors of dried, black currant, sarsaparilla, black licorice, cedar and black leather driving the medium-medium-plus finish and moderate+ alcohol. Mild, dusty tannins, with good acidity, and medium-medium-plus body. Not a your typical Syrah, nor a Northern Rhone look-a-like, though unique and enjoyable for what it is today. I'm sure this will last a few more years due to its structure, through no need to wait, it's ready to drink anytime.

Open and drinking well now... Popped, poured and decanted over a 4 hour period... best after an hour or two open... Big, ripe, and modern, with concentrated fruit.. surprisingly reminiscent of some big, ripe, fruit forward Napa/Sonoma Cabs or Port... Rather simple, with concentrated black cherry liqueur, dried black currant, intermingled with dark chocolate, black licorice and spice... Delicious and enjoyable, if your in the mood for a big, ripe, fruit-forward wine... I was this evening and enjoyed it without food.. Well balanced for size... Full-bodied and mouth-coating, with dusty tannins, decent acid, and a lingering finish of dried currants, black licorice, chocolate and spice. No complaints, this was exactly what I had expected... Great QPR! Will probably be enjoyable for another couple years, though no need to wait.

Still drinking, though no longer youthful* Expressing focused, concentrated, dark, ripe fruit aromas and flavors (edging on dried, black currents) with hints of black olive, bay leaf, herbs, dark chocolate, and cedar. The mouthfeel is generous and round, with a mouthfilling size, decent acid, medium-plus/full-body, with soft, fine, dusty tannins. The finish lingers effortlessly, with flavors of dried, black currents, bay leaf and dark chocolate... In conclusion, nothing that is going to change the world, though it is definitely an enjoyable, above average California styled Cab, from an average vintage, even after being open a day. What would make it even better, is if you can buy it below the release price. Drink now. (*notes written from 3/4 bottle, consumed on day 2. I did not taste this bottle on day 1)

Youthful Nebbiolo.. kinda a treat of sorts... tasted over two days, review written on day 2... In conclusion... Deep, dark, ripe, juicy, strawberry and black cherry, with touches of spice, high toned oak resin, and creamy vanilla nuances... medium-medium-plus bodied... fine, dusty, drying tannins... a rather powerful wine for classification... higher alc. apparent, though not unappealing, as it's a big, fruited wine... a serious Langhe... needs long decant or time in cellar... recommendable.

This producer currently frustrates me. While my knowledge has been limited to only the 2007-2011 vintages, the amount of variability and number of flawed bottles in my limited experience has been high. The last bottle 2008 I had was acidic and tannic, with little fruit, aroma or flavor. Maybe it is my luck???? ...though I've either gotten a great bottle or a flawed bottle, which is not a good thing. This bottle happened to be good... and more about texture, then aroma or flavor.. Not much aroma or flavor to rave about in the first hour, as it seemed to be all structure... though after a couple hours, aromas of bee pollen came to mind, with notes of meat and iron... with flavors of ripe, black currant, honey, and iron coating the palate... although the texture seemed to impress me more then the restrained aromas and flavors... After a 3 hour decant, the wine really began to fill out and sing... Loving the last few pours!! Great texture and finesse!! I recommend a 3+ hour decant or more time in the cellar... Although, the variability of the producer scares me.. it's been like the lottery for me... you either win or lose... guess I won tonight... roll the dice, pull the cork...

Strawberry, raspberry, nutty funkiness and spice, with tons of stony minerality... high acidity, and chalky, gripping tannins... a very seriously structured nouveau, with tons of character... which makes this is more of a village level+ Beaujolais, then simply a simple "Nouveau"... all things considered, this is rather serious stuff... which seems to takes on weight and depth the longer it is exposed to air... after 5 hours, the fruit had darkened and the had structure intensified... best enjoyed with food.
