5/20/2013 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 90 pointsWonderful bouquet of crimson roses, strawberries, ripe cherries and Parma ham. Very alluring for it's vibrancy and uplifting bouquet. Among all the six (Armilla, Cerbaiona, Altesino, Orino and Poggio), the mouthfeel was clearly the lightest. Smooth tannins and distinctive sourness (tart cherries) reinforced the fresh experience. I thought this was a worthy pairing with the Amuse Bouche of puréed peas with mint. The wine deteriorated by the time the Wagyu beef cheeks were served 3 hours later. 2009 Montevertine Montevertine was more pleasurable. |

1/25/2015 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 90 pointsWe drank the bottle over two days. Compared with the several cote du rhones I drank over the past several weeks, this wine is a markedly more substantial wine. On appearance, it is a thicker and darker shade of crimson. The nose was broodier and more muted with slight hints of truffles , but an absence of fruity freshness. The palate had a medium-bodied thickness and smooth tannins. Fruity sweetness was elusive, while the finish was still rather uninspiring. This wine really blossomed on the second day. The bouquet really emerged. Raspberries and other forest berries, reinforced mushrooms. The palate was far livelier with the forest berries dominated by tart cherries. Tannins were well integrated and the cherry acidity lengthened the finish with freshness. For the price I paid (@US$17), this is a great deal. I'm glad I have a case. |

12/6/2014 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 89 pointsPop and Poured. Very faint, straw tinge to an otherwise crystal clear wine. While I was expecting a vibrant and aggressive bouquet I find typical of many New World SB's, the aromas were surprisingly more subdued. Rather than vegetal, it was more herbal - peppermint and lime-grapefruit - permeated the senses. The palate was more vibrant. The bracing acidity that I expected, was actually very well controlled showing crisp precision. This might be the result of the good balance between the lime citrus acidity and the ripe grapefruit sweetness. The herbal undertones followed through. This is the second time I tried the Logan SB's. I enjoyed both occasions. |

11/14/2014 - megavalanche wrote: 89 pointsVibrant bouquet of melon and stone fruits. More evolved and overt, with a slight reductive character on the palate. It was already open for business. Muted lemony acidity and slight mi reality to support the backbone. This is likely destined for early drinking. |

11/18/2014 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 90 pointsSweet ripe berries - raspberries, strawberries and cherries on both the bouquet and the palate. The sweetness is more prominent on the palate. Medium+ body that was initially smooth, but slightly overwhelmed by the obvious heat. While it was decanted for an hour, several more hours may be needed to tame the alcohol. Overall, this was a direct, obvious CDP bordering on being a bit foursquare. Still, enjoyable. |

10/27/2014 - megavalanche wrote: 88 pointsUpon opening the bottle, a very fragrant aroma of vivid dark cherries and rich chocolate scents fills my senses. The nose reminds me of a well-made rich Blackforest cake. In the glass, the wine is deep Tyrian purple colour. On the palate, the juicy dark cherry character dominates, while the dark chocolate nuances are much less obvious. There is a nice medium body that provides some weight and lift. Although there might be some slight earthiness on the palate, tarty cherry acidity emerges and takes over the palate. Vivid acidity and chewier tannins carry the wine to the finish. |

10/19/2014 - megavalanche wrote: 92 pointsUpon opening, the wine was pretty clear crimson coloured, but over time (4 hours) it developed into a deep maroon and opaque appearance. The bouquet matched the wine's evolution. Very soon after opening, the vibrant aromas of red berries - just ripe raspberries and tart cherries, bursted through. On the palate, tart cherries generated racy personality to the wine. This tartness culminated into a surprising brawn of sweet and enfolding tannins. Initially, this wine appeared medium-light bodied. Over the next several ours, the wine continued to blossom as the bouquet intensified with ripe raspberries, fragrant strawberries and vivid bing cherries. At seven years of age, the primary profiles continue to dominate, though hints of herbs and earthiness peaked through. On the palate, the wine gathered more resonance and body. Fresh red-berries evolved into a red berries' compote, while the tartiness folded into a velvety tannic finish. This was a pleasure to have with the tomahawk steak I cooked with butter and thyme & rosemary. This affirmed my appreciation for Montevertine. |

10/18/2014 - megavalanche Does not like this wine: NRClear, mellow yellow color with hint of age. On the nose, notes of toasted coconut, popcorn and melon emerged showing power and broodiness. I felt the nose was rather muted and lack liveliness. While some ripe pineapple tones followed, I failed to discern any uplifting citrus in the aroma. On the palate, the melon and coconut profiles persisted. Compared with the Burgundies I tried before, this is fuller. Heat from the obvious alcohol filled my senses and imparted some bitterness in my mouth and onto the finish. The lingering heat leaves a rather strong aftertaste. I understand many others will enjoy this wine. For me, this typifies the my stereotype of the American Chardonnay. This does not remind me of a good New Zealand Chardonnay (Kumeu River Coddington, Sacred Hill Rifleman, Neudorf Moutere or Milton Anne's Vineyard). Those are more elegant yet very bold. This wine is not what I like. |

9/22/2014 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 92 pointsAromas of Fragrant honey and candied oranges envelope the scent. I also detect some barley/cereal aromas as well from this light golden wine. I like this scent profile that is not unlike the Lis Neris that I enjoyed recently. With higher expectations, I had my first taste. On the palate, the wine feels weightier - medium bodied - yet racier as well. While the honey barley flavours grew more prominent to suggest a bit of RS, ripe lemon acidity woke my senses. Lemon-orange flavor and custardy textures carried to the finish. I can understand and appreciate how some people will like the attractive aromas/flavors and racy tension and nice finish of this wine. I prefer the Lis Neris more for it's creamier & lithe palate and better balance. Perhaps, if my mood was different, I might have a different response. It is also about 20% more expensive than the Zind-Humbrecht PG Clos Windsbuhl and over twice as much as the Lis Neris. QPR was a factor. |

3/14/2014 - megavalanche wrote: 90 pointsThe wine looks clear and lemon chiffon in colour. The bouquet was neither steely lemon-lime nor modest fruity peach I expected. Rather, there was an interesting smell of ripe loquat and cereals. The palate was very different from the bouquet as lime acidity and flinty minerality took over and balanced out the wine. I might have preferred a bit more of the enticing bouquet to work though the palate. It was also a bit rounder than other Chablis I have had before. Nonetheless, this was a very appealing wine. After leaving half a serving in the glass until the end of the dinner, I returned to the wine and found a very different bouquet emerging. While some called it sweeter, I would qualify it as being even more cereal than before. The aromas reminded me of a barley-based sweet soup and only hints of the loquat fruits. More of the flinty minerality emerged to complement the cereal aromas on the palate. This was quite nice. |

3/7/2014 - megavalanche wrote: 86 pointsI opened this straight from the fridge and left it for 10 minutes. It was very pale straw in colour. I caught subdued aromas of white flowers and lemon-limes. On the palate, charged freshness transforms into lemon-lime tartness. However, the bracing acidity pairs with aggressive minerality. As the wine was too cold, I left the bottle alone in cool water for at least an hour. On my return occasion, attractive white flowers emerged to blend with more pale stone fruits and limes. The palate gained more balance as the citrus acidity was in better harmony with the minerality of the wine. While the minerality brought length to the wine, it remained a bit coarse and less balance when compared to the 2011. |

3/7/2014 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 95 pointsOn my first contact, the nose smelled a bit oxidized, while the palate tasted substantial and felt on the verge of exploding. After half an hour in the glass, the bouquet steadily emerged. Faint spices - Cloves and nutmeg wafted from the glass. After a while, the bouquet really blossomed. Images of a tasty Christmas pudding emerged - dried fruits, brandied butter and breadiness was encased in cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. In the mouth, there was some lemony acidity to freshen the palate and intrigue the senses. This was wonderful and compelling. |

2/28/2014 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 93 pointsWonderfully alluring bouquet of grapefruit and barely ripe pineapples. Although the wines were stored in oak barrels, there were no obvious hints of oak. Perhaps a slight creaminess blended with nice minerality that balanced well with the citrus acidity. Accents of salinity reinvigorate your palate and leaves a refreshing finish. |

12/13/2013 - megavalanche wrote: 79 pointsPerhaps the bottle was too warm. On the nose, I detected muted stone fruits and the tangy traces of under-ripe pineapple. On the palate, I was underwhelmed as the aromas did not canary through. Though there was some citrus acidity, there was also some noticeable minerality which actually left the impression the wine was falling apart. I try not to be harsh, but I wanted to pour my glass out. |

12/6/2013 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 92 pointsHaving enjoyed Cabernet Franc from both Clos Rougeard and Domaine de la Butte, I wanted to try another Cabernet Franc producer from the Loire Valley. I opened and kept the wine in the bottle for 3 hours before pouring. While the roasted bell pepper aroma was obvious, it was not dominant. Aromas of graphite, tobacco, violet and dark fruit emerged. The bouquet on this wine was alluring. This wine was very dark and opaque: maroon to purple with reddish hues. On the palate, the tobacco and dark fruit flavours were more evident while the tannins were mostly dissolved. There was a nice balance of flavours that stretched the length of the wine quite noticeably. I might have preferred a bit more weight in the mid-palate. Nonetheless, this wine was a pleasure to drink, though I still prefer the Clos Rougeard experience more. |

12/3/2013 - megavalanche Likes this wine: 89 pointsThe six bottles the host opened for tasting were all bought from the same shop. The corks appeared fragile. Within half a hour, the first two bottles were poured. In the glass, the wine appeared bright garnet with some cloudiness. Decanting might have been required. I also noticed some brick hues on the edges. Graphite, earth and dark cocoa aromas appear after a delicate swirl as the bouquet was not really intense. I did not detect any fruit on the nose. Still, the aromas was pleasant. The palate was disappointing. Flavours were muted cut short my expectations of what the bouquet suggested. There was very little body or finish to the wine. I tried another glass half an hour later. Visually, the wine deepened to a dark ruby colour, though it remain slightly cloudy. The bouquet evolved from its earthiness towards more fruity flavours. Stewed berries carried from the nose to the palate as the wine fattened up considerably. This is an impressive development. The wine gained more depth and length. Alas, the wine started breaking down after another half hour. |
