Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Deep garnet in colour, with a mild brick. On the nose, candied red and black fruits, lavender, soap, rubber, vanilla, alcohol, oak and custard. On the palate, purple drank; sweet dark fruit preserves, spice, dried herb and notable alcohol. Tannin is moderate, acidity is medium minus, and the finish is a bit clipped due to the tannin, with only the sense of alcohol lingering in the mouth. Overall rather simplistic and not in a style I enjoy.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Garnet in colour, with a moderate brick at the rim. On the nose, this is very true to the place in which it comes; red and black fruit, baking spice, undergrowth, incense, flowers and fresh picked herbs, leather and a touch of horse stable. On the palate, red/black fruit, mineral, earth, spice, dried herb and a touch of licorice. Lovely wine.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Garnet in colour with a moderate brick. On the nose, sour candies, hairspray, alcohol. On the palate, like notes; tons of heat. I will give this the benefit of the doubt and call it flawed, although sadly consistent with some other "older" VTs we've had.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Garnet in colour, with a moderate brick at the rim. On the nose red berries, blackberry, incense, orange peel, dried herb, leather, soy, beef stock, dried mushroom, crushed rock and an overlay of horse stable. This screams traditional producer with a dirty cellar. On the palate, well balanced with excellent concentration, with tastes of red and black fruits, spice, pepper, orange rind and leather. There is perhaps a touch of heat on the finish which detracts slightly from the whole package. Guessed this as either the Pegau or the Donjon.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Bottled corked.

Second bottle pulled from cellar, popped and poured. Deep garnet in colour with a slight brick. On the nose, this was a touched reduced with a rubbery element noted, this blew off to some degree over time, revealing the underlying kirsch liqueur, baked blackberries, anise and a touch of wood. There is quite a bit of heat on the nose noted, making this rather unpleasant to take in. The palate is similar, with high ripeness and extraction, showing sweet black fruits, licorice, and spice. Finishes moderate and quite hot. Overall, not a pleasant drink and outclassed by a number of wines this evening.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours. Deep garnet in the glass, with no brick. Red currant, blackberry, gravel, bell pepper, celery seed, fresh picked herb, smoked meat, and earth. On the palate, really well polished; structured, but moderate silky tannin, medium acidity; finishes just a touch dry, with tastes of cassis, bell pepper, herbs and earth. A lot of power and depth here, but needs about 5 years to really come in to its own.

Popped and poured, followed for approximately 3 hours. Light gold in the glass, with persistent micro bubbles. On the nose, tangerine, lemon zest, toasted nut, red apple, crushed rock, spice, brioche, and marzipan. On the palate, fine mouse, medium plus acidity, dosage is relatively low. Finishes moderate length, accentuated with tastes of red apple, tangerine peel, lemon zest, hazelnut, yeast, salted caramel and mineral.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 3 hours. Light straw gold in colour, with a slight green tinge. On the nose, lemon drop, lime zest, honeydew melon, fresh herb, crushed rock, slight vanillin oak and custard. On the palate, quite lean, with medium plus acidity. The finish is of moderate length, framed with tastes of lemon zest, mineral and herb. This is my fourth experience with this particular bottling, all consistent notes. Not sure what the future holds for this wine, as it is leaner and higher acid than both the 2009 and 2010 vintages, as well as lacking a bit of complexity and exuberance. While well made, and quite enjoyable, I'm not sure this will hit the same heights, even with further time in the bottle. My recommendation would be to hold and hope for the best.

Popped and poured, followed approximately two hours. Deep garnet in the glass, with perhaps the faintest bricking at the rim. The nose was fairly expressive from the get go, with notes of currant, pencil lead, tobacco, cedar, fresh herb, earth and light florals. On the palate, still quite structured, but well polished and in near perfect balance. Moderate unresolved tannin, medium acidity, and a long finish, accentuated with tastes of currant, blackberry, graphite, cigar, earth and cedar. Lovely wine. Textbook Bordeaux, with a ton of potential. From a well stored bottle, I'd give this another 5-8 years before this hits full maturity.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours. Deep purple, almost inky in colour, with no bricking noted. Condition of the bottle was immaculate and it showed. The nose was soaring straight out of the gate, with florals taking the forefront, accentuated with dark fruits; blackcurrant, blackberry; cedar, spice, and a touch of graphite. The nose is still relatively primary at this stage, but beautifully perfumed. On the palate, this wine shines; such beautiful structure, perfectly balanced, showing medium acidity, moderate silky tannin and a tremendous depth of flavour and purity. Finishes quite long, with tastes of flowers, dark fruits, earth, spice and a touch of cedar. Based on this tasting, I would wait another 10 years to open another. While this still gave immense pleasure today, its finest days are yet to come. Classic even today, but eventually, this will merit a near perfect score.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours in the glass. Garnet with a light brick. This was just rocking right out the gate; textbook Bordeaux here. An expressive nose of black currant, earth, tobacco, undergrowth, leather, horse stable, cedar and mint. On the palate, medium acidity, mostly resolved tannin. Finish is moderate plus in length, framed by tastes of blackcurrant, plum, earth, leather and light pyrazine notes, showing just a touch of grip on the finish. This was lovely.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours. Garnet in the glass, with a slight brick. The nose on this was really strange. Heavy green notes were predominant; green tobacco, green chile, green beans, foliage; beyond that, ash, coriander, black currant, red bell pepper, crushed rock, soil and a touch of wood. On the palate, much of the nose carries through, with tastes of black currant, ash, pyrazine, and earth. Texturally, this feels a bit fat on entry, but the finish is significantly clipped with medium to medium plus acidity, and astringent tannin. Certainly interesting, but not much of a pleasant drink. Absolutely destroyed by the other 1996s.

Bottled under screw cap. Popped and poured. Deep garnet in colour in the glass. Very traditionally styled, with notes of dark fruits; blueberry, blackberry; smouldering pine needles, smoked meat, black pepper, leather, black olive brine and horse stable. On the palate, more round than expected, with mild tannin, medium acidity. Finish is moderate, accentuated with notes of dark fruits, pepper, dried herb, smoke and olive. Not too much upside here, but a lovely low cost near term drinker with character.

Served blind. Translucent garnet in the glass with a moderate brick. On first sniff, I was blown away; black fruit, olive brine, pickle juice, baking spice, fennel, smoke, cured meat, anise and white pepper. Just one of those noses where there are a myriad of different aromas, and with each time you go to your glass, you pick out a few more. On the palate, the wine falters a bit; a touch lean, lacking some density/concentration, but still very well put together. The finish is moderate, ever so slightly clipped. I think this is in its graceful down slide, but still a lovely showing today. If this bottle is representative, drink now.

Served blind. Inky dark purple in the glass, no bricking. On the nose, copious amounts of blueberry, powdered sugar, pen ink, florals, spice, overt alcohol, and a heavy overlay of oak, with notes of wood, coconut and vanilla. On the palate, quite structured; medium tannin, medium plus tannin; reasonably well balanced. Finishes moderate with the tastes of blueberry, oak, vanilla, spice and dried flowers. Quite rambunctious today, but may settle down with time. I would not be interested in aging this on my dime, however.

Light gold colour in the glass, with a fine, persistent bead. On the nose, lemon zest, crushed rock, grated ginger, apple, toast, tangerine and spice. On the palate, lovely balance; medium acidity and dosage just right. Finishes long with tastes of lemon peel, mineral, apple, ginger and tangerine. This has showed consistently well and punches above its weight.

On the palate, lemon zest, green apple, mineral, with medium plus acids, a moderate roundness, but finishes quite bitter with tastes of walnut skin. I was not really keen on this, but that put me in the minority.

Light gold in colour, with a moderate bead that dissipates rather quickly. On the nose, honey, lemon peel, tangerine, grated ginger, decaying red apple, toast, spice, and hint of mushroom, caramel and a touch of garbage juice. On the palate, this is round with moderate dosage (reportedly 12 g/L), medium plus acidity. The finish is relatively long, with tastes of lemon zest, mineral, baked apple, salted caramel, grapefruit, spice and yeast. This bottle seemed a touch advanced for its age, but if representative, I wouldn't age this for too long.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Garnet in colour with the light brick. On the nose, perhaps the biggest wine so far; blackberry, crushed raspberries, kirsch, anise, crushed rock, garrigue, and a touch of tar. On the palate, clean fruit and fresh acidity, mostly resolved tannin, and medium acidity. Tastes of blackberry, kirsch, licorice, mineral, herbs and spice round out the moderate length finish. A well made fine for sure, but compared to the older Beaucastel that I've had, seemingly devoid of any distinctive character.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Garnet in colour, with a light brick. On the nose, black fruits, olive tapenade, earth, mint, horse stable, beetroot, baking spice, smoke and leather. This is darker in nature than the Rayas Pignan that preceded it, but still showing lovely aromatics. On the palate, a rounded, slightly sweet entry, medium plus acidity, and some unresolved tannin. The finish is moderate, accentuated with tastes of black fruit, olive, earth, mineral, spice and smoke. A lovely showing from this wine, with plenty of traditional character. In a good spot for drinking now, but should hold for quite some time.

On the palate, fresh pure fruit, with racy acidity. Finishes moderate with tastes of lemon/lime, mineral and a slight herbal tinge lingering on the back end. I quite enjoyed this.

Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. Garnet in colour, with a light brick. On first sniff, it was quite obvious as to what this was; the one we were all waiting for. Gorgeous red fruited nose of cranberry, pomegranate, fresh cut strawberry, crushed rock, incense, orange peel, white pepper, baking spice, smoke and a touch of leather. On the palate, good concentration and depth, with medium acidity. Finish is long, accentuated with tastes of red fruit, orange peel, smoke, and white pepper. There is a tiny bit of astringency on the back end of the palate that keeps me from pushing this up to a classic score.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 30 minutes. Light straw gold in the glass. On the nose, melon, florals, vanilla, honey, mineral, lemon/lime zest, with an herbal tinge and a kiss of oak. As it warms in the glass, the oak become a bit more prevalent. On the palate, rich and somewhat voluptuous, showing an oily texture. Based on the nose, I would have pegged this for being slightly deficient in acid, however, on tasting, there are sufficient acid to keep this fresh and counterbalance the richness. The finish is moderate, with tastes of melon, citrus, mineral, honey, vanilla, and a touch of wood. A tiny bit of heat stands out on the back end, but overall, a strong effort. I am not particularly fond of this producer, but this was better than expected.

Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours. Garnet in colour, showing a moderate brick. Interesting having this alongside the 1996; showing a touch less fruit, but really similarly, just a few more years along the aging curve with more tertiary aromatics. The nose shows black currant, earth, dried tobacco, celery seed, leather, undergrowth, and mushroom. A truly classic nose. On the palate, this is where the wine falters a bit. Slightly less concentration than the 1996 and a shorter, slightly astringent finish. Still a lovely wine, but not at the level of the 1996. Optimal drinking now.
