Really very good, with bright dark fruit and an earthiness, a good balance between earth and fruit, and a silky, suave mouthfeel. Nice dark raspberry core becomes even more focused after a few hours of air. There are layers left to unfold here, and I would cellar this another four years or more. No degradation overnight.

Nothing too complex here, but clean and moderately brisk. Very satisfying back at the hotel after the third of three Grateful Dead 50 shows. With Zank on the balcony at 2am at the Thompson hotel, Chicago.

Lots of ripe dark red fruit here, but nicely balanced and it never really colors outside the lines. Big hit at the table, especially Mark Z. GT Fish & Oyster, Chicago, with Zank and Co. Grateful Dead 50.

Bright palate, clear and white fruits (like last September, I am tempted to use "orchard fruits" as a descriptor, but I have the same reluctance, because what type of orchard?). Good acidity. There is a bit of wood, and at times it seems the alcohol is a bit much, and the wine could use better harmony. As the wine airs, more vanilla comes out. Finishes with bitter bit fruit. Good, not excellent.

If it wasn't for the bit of TCA on top, this would be a nice Bourgogne, as it had very nice fruit, good balance, and a silky, elegant mouthfeel.

This was excellent. Smooth mouthfeel, seems completely ready to drink right now. Extremely well balanced. Greg says that the structure is completely buried in the fruit presently. Amazing balance and symmetry. So utterly fine. Delicious. One of the best CCRs I’ve ever had. Old vines, single vineyard. Just terrific. Purchased in San Gimignano and enjoyed with Greg at Fietri, Gaiole in Chianti.

This note is for the "Riserva".
The 15% oak aging imparts a rounded mouthfeel to this wine. Not much cut. But quite nice on the palate, with round, golden fruit, and good texture. I prefer wines with more cut and acidity, e.g., unoaked Vernaccia, but this was nice. Outside at Fietri, Gaiole in Chianti, with Greg, in the rain.

This shows good red to black fruit, berry and cherry, on the palate, and a chunky, substantial mouthfeel, with a thick palate. The oak seems to be in check and the fruit is forward and bright. Rather young and simple, but enjoyable. With Jason R. at Tarry Lodge in Port Chester, before the Mike Gordon show at the Capital.

We needed more wine to go with the second set, and so YB pulled this out. Lovely aromatics, just captivating high notes on the nose of herbs and flowers. The beautiful nose transitions to the palate, with bright citrus acidity and more bright floral notes which reminded me of the high citrus/floral notes of a good pale ale. Blue/black fruit on the palate, along with olives and black pepper notes. Silky mouthfeel. Bright acidity pulls it all together. Impressive wine at this price point. At Yaacov's for the Grateful Dead, Fare Thee Well, second night.

6/28/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

Really very good. There is a dustiness to the palate here, a surprising advanced texture at only nine years old, and I rather like it. There's still plenty of fruit, a good amount of underlying acidiy (that at first, when blinded, with the dustiness, made me think Italian) and this is very nicely tapered and balanced, old-school like. Enjoyed this a lot.
YB pulled this out to pair with the Grateful Dead Fare thee Well, second night.

This was very nice, and much better than the '11 Fevre Preuses Grand Cru that I had last week in Chianti. Begins with a hint of reduction/match stick that eventually blows off. The palate is big, typical Fevre assertiveness, with lots of bright white and clear fruits, lots of citrus and a rather strong bitter fennel note. Lots of energy. This is especially good for the vintage, but I would drink it young.

This was a wine that I drank frequently about ten years ago. It was old school, well made, satisfying and inexpensive. This most recent bottle was, not surprisingly, much more developed than my last bottle years ago. The nose is especially complex and intriguing, with notes of leather and a dark, soy-like component. Very smooth mouthfeel, classic Chianti, some dried herbs. Excellent, old school, very satisfying. My first night in Chianti, poolside at Fietri, Gaiole in Chianti, with Greg.

Almost 3 years since my last bottle, from a stash of NVs bought then and aged in the cellar since. This is really interesting and good. A bit of age has given this Blanc de Blancs some tanner wheaty notes, but the palate is otherwise clear and crisp, with nice acidity and energy. With air, trace sherrry notes emerge. Nice balance of BdB clear notes as it also shows signs of advancement.

6/19/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

This has the freshness of the 2011 vintage that I've noticed across the board this week in Chianti, but this one is notable because it is rather inward-looking and compact, while still very delicious. Five years in the cellar should losen this one up. Another successful Bucerchiale, this one more stern than I recall the 2004 on its release. At Armando al Pantheon in Rome.

Not even close to ready. Lock this up for at least another ten years. There is some softening to the structure here, but this remains very primary, a pool of mute fruit that one day will be excellent but today is showing at best a light dusting of curry powder, even as the outside has a gentle face. No change over night. With Greg at Fietri, Gaiole in Chianti.

Immediately so much better than a bottle of 2010 Bessin 1er Forets a few weeks ago, that wine showing more mellow pear, but this Fourchaume showing more citrus, grapefruit pith, acidity and energy than the weaker, softer Forets. Hints of saline and chalk. No oak. Nice brisk finish. Delicious Chablis.

Another good showing. At first, my impression is that this is more toned down than in the past, not as effusive and energetic as I remember, although still very good. Clear palate, no oak, very nice. This firms up and becomes more "classic" on the second night, when it shows really good structure and underlying tension. Quite enjoyable.

Surprisingly unevolved and primary. The sides are round and smooth and the structure is not really showing, both attributes of age, and yet the palate is still young and primary. I would cellar this for a few years with the hope of a more expressive, complex palate, but the smoothness of the palate and the absence of notable structure suggest that this may not be one to cellar. Try in 3 or 4 years. Racines with Sarah and the Sugarmen.

Perfect bottle. Showed very well. Opened quickly to show red fruit, rust and cinnamon. Round and smooth on the sides, full in the mouth, yet not heavy. Supple texture, silky smooth and round. Lots of long sediment particles that seemed more like seaweed than fine particles. Racines, with Sarah and the Sugarmen.
