2008 Gérard Raphet Chambolle-Musigny

Pinot Noir more

Lovely nose of dried cherries and dried herbs, smells like "Old Burgundy" and is very inviting. Palate follows the nose, with dried red fruit, dried roses, a bit of forest floor, nice acidty underneath the top layer of drier fruit. Opened up quickly and showed well. Much better than the '08 Raphet Morey St. Denis I opened a week ago. With Jimmy, on the porch, listening to Fare thee Well night 1, Sag Harbor.

Very clean, very nice, with mellon fruit and a round palate. I was expecting a bit more of a "mountain herb" persona, more Savoie-like, but this was softer, rounder and I would have preferred more acidity and cut. Still, a nice summer afternoon wine. At Gary Z's in Sag Harbor.

Agree with the prior tasting note, clean up front but with some oak on the finish. Easy drinking, not especially complex. From magnum, at Gary Z's in Sag Harbor.

The nose here smells a lot like Nebbiolo, and is very inviting with its dried cherry and dried spice notes. Reminds me of the '64 Spanna we had last summer in Philli. Lovely on the palate, with dried red cherry and cranberry notes, soft tannins. Went very well with duck at the bar at Red Cat with Sarah.

I brought a bottle to dinner at Nice Matin, and the restaurant happened to be pouring the 1998 by the glass, so we had a little comparison. The 2005 was, as usual, very good, with golden fruit and coconut notes, very unctuous, very slutty and decadent. The 1998 was darker and richer. With James and Nancy.

2009 La Mondotte

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/22/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

Balanced, dark and rich. James tells me that this sees a good amount of new oak, yet it is balanced. Very concentrated palate, with a plush mouthfeel, but not excessively so. Clearly a modern styled Bordeaux, but I like it because it is seriously rich yet balanced and not over the top. With James and Nancy at Nice Matin.

Surprised at how soft, pretty and ready this showed. 2006 is supposed to go long in the cellar, but this was terrific now. Wild strawberry fruit, nice dusting of herbs, softly textured. Just lovely. With James and Nancy at Nice Matin.

Thus far, I have not been a big fan of the 2011 Chablis. This '11 Fevre Montee, however, I think is one of the better ones I've sampled. This was decanted and opened nicely over the course of dinner. Begins with a hit of sulfur that takes a short while to blow off, then revealing clear and white fruits and some chalk notes. We all enjoyed this. With James and Nancy at Nice Matin.

Nice way to end a lovely Friday evening in Sag Harbor. Much lighter in color and less thick than a bottle of 2005 Guiraud Sauternes I opened two nights prior with James and Nancy. This is more pineapple and lighter toned than the darker, thicker, more hedonistic Guiraud. Marmelade notes. The sweetness is in check. With vanilla crumb cake from the local farmers market. Sag Harbor with the Zanks.

Dark Syrah, loads of blue/black plummy fruit with a good blast of black pepper. Soft, round, plush mouthfeel. Not as spoofy as a bottle in Nov 2014, but not a tight, structured N. Rhone, more fruit-forward. With Flannery porterhouse at the Zanks in Sag Harbor.

CT tells me that I last opened a bottle of this wine in 2009, and I found it to be oaky. Not so currently. This showed vert well. Like many 2005 Tuscan wines, it is an open, softer wine, drinking nicely now. This showed a mellow, soft palate, resolved dark plummy fruit with a light dusting of dried herbs. This is soft and ready to go. Paired well with a monstrous Flannery porterhouse. Pia and Jimmy both loved this wine. In Sag Harbor.

From a batch of NV champagnes that I bought years ago and cellared. First bottle since 2012 and this showed much better than that initial bottle. There are baked apple notes, as well as fresh apple, and a bit of sweetness. Not especially refined, more boxy, goes down very easy, though.

Begins nicely, with an inviting nose that has a hint of sweet funk and a palate that shows cherry, earth and iron notes. The wine stays at this level, the iron becomming stronger, without much further development. Basic wine, not much more, but enjoyable.

2.5 years since my last bottle. This has mellowed, any edges now smoothed out, yet it remains very clear and pure. The fruit is clear with a hint of sun-baked golden, and is long in the mouth with nice acids but very smooth on the sides. Brought this to "Summer Wines" at Stephen V's.

Almost three years since my last bottle. The nose is soaring right away, with pepper, grilled meat, BBQ notes, and other N. Rhone Syrah goodness. The palate is soft, with a plush mouthfeel, and lots of flavor - pepper, grilled meat, a hint of mesquite, dark fruit. While there is still underlying acidity, the wine is soft in the mouth, not particularly structured and my dinner mates add that this is reflective of a hot vintage, and Michel calls this compote-like. I enjoyed the nuances of flavor here. With Brad and Michel and dinner on Brad's balcony on a beautiful NYC summer evening.

Nice Nebbiolo, in a good place now. The fruit is red to dark tones, the palate is round and soft, the tannins light, and the overall impression is a cohesive, balanced, pretty wine. The fruit darkens with air. Nice midweek wine, drinking well.

1995 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Gallina di Neive

Nebbiolo more

7/9/2015 - Pknut wrote: NR

Lovely Barbaresco that shows precise, soft plum fruit and a soft, rounded palate that is well integrated and harmonious, but still has plenty of acidity to support further cellaring. Also has a nice dusting of Middle Eastern spices. Not as brawny as I recall the '98 Giacosa Gallina, this '95 shows a more feminine, gentle side and is drinking very nicely now. Grateful Dead night at David B. in Irvington, with shortribs.
