1989 Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/30/2015 - DarinC Likes this wine: 98 points

Damp cork, near perfect fill from a properly stored bottle. PnP, consumed 4/5 of the bottle over 3 hours on night 1 before the remainder was corked and stored at 37F. Spectacular perfume of black currant, unsmoked cigars, black tea, new leather, gravely soil tones, and a light dusting of spices. Medium bodied, elegant and complete in the mouth front to back.Few ultra-fine tannins on the persistent, complex finish. Beautiful, clean bottle! Better than the 1989 Chateau Margaux I had weeks earlier. Better on its own rather than with food.

More aromatic and interesting on day 2. These should hold well for many years.

Still youthful in color, aroma, and flavor. Having said that, it's open for business! The oak has integrated to the dark cherry, black currant, clean tobacco, and soil tones. Fresh in the mouth with no hard edges. Fine tannins coat the finish. This will age long and well. Enjoyed by a wide range of palates. 92+

There seems to be a lot of bottle variation here despite the high reviews. Perfect cork and fill. Poured into a large Reidel glass and consumed over 3+ hours. This particular bottle seemed mostly closed and in need of another 5-10 years. Dark and brooding only giving up aromas of black cherry, balsamic, hits of tar and damask floral elements. Similar notes on the palate, but missing some depth, complexity and excitement. There's potential, though. Given the high CT scores I was expecting much more. Enjoyable, but nowhere near some of my best Nebbiolo experiences. 92 +

This has really mellowed since release and is in a good window. With a few minutes in the glass, any excessive heat is nowhere to be found. Really intense wine! Layered and deep with abundant notes of dark fruit, raspberry syrup, bacon, roasted cocoa beans, tar, licorice and dark spices. Very long. Lots of pleasure, if you're in the mood for this style of wine. Don't drink it too warm.

Early maturity and in a great place now. I agree with BAM_MAN's recent detailed notes on this wine. Excellent QPR! Second great bottle this year.

Consistent performer over the years. No secondary elements, but I wouldn't recommend holding these for the long-term. Does not benefit from decanting, and the fruit tends to fade over time and the tannins, though ripe, become more noticeable. Opulent, with plenty of cassis, black fruits, cocoa and blueberries. Textbook Napa cab.

Fresh baked bread, cooked apples, citrus, almond and a hint of pear. Expressive! Sumptuous mouthfeel with an impressive finish. This was a great bottle and a slight improvement over the one opened 2 years ago.

Musty red cherry and herbs. Prominent, but not displeasing acidity on the palate. Medium body. Not intellectual, but a solid food wine.

Very rich and intense with gobs of red fruit--characteristic of the producer's style. This likely won't age well from here. Drink now ~2017

PnP and consumed over a 5 hour dinner. Much lighter in color and body than the vintage would suggest. Though, the beautiful nose is filled with very ripe dark, mostly black, fruits over a base of smoke and soil tones. Even with hours of air the mid-palate never filled out completely, but it's still a lovely wine that outperforms the vintage for my palate. Still young, but entering early maturity.

Decanted and served over several hours. Overt oak influence immediately after opening, but a couple hours later it integrated well. Pure aromas and flavors of lemon curd, vanilla, crisp pear and a hint of papaya. Full-bodied and complete. Excellent value! Should drink even better in 3-5 years. 93+

PnP and consumed over 4 hours. Closed and tight the first 10-20 minutes in the glass, then aromas of dark red berries, newly rolled tobacco, sage and spices emerged. Full bodied, but not rich. A refined, dare I say, elegant expression of Aglianico. Few fine ripe tannins emerge on the respectable finish. Could use more depth in the mid-palate, but overall an excellent bottle that significantly outperforms its price point! Just beginning to enter its drinking window with room for improvement and at least a decade of life. 93+

Whoa! This bottle was great! It was an improvement over the wonderful bottle I opened 2 years ago. Initially, there were the yeasty, brioche notes, followed by lemon custard and keylime pie elements. Later, the brighter citrus tones and minerality shined. Fine bubbles and impeccably balanced with a long elegant finish. A hint of almond oil. This stole the show and impressed palates who ordinarily don't favor for Champagne. Entering maturity and worth popping a bottle.
