2013 J. Lohr Chardonnay Riverstone

Arroyo Seco more

7/27/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 89 points

Almost fluorescent green-tinged medium yellow; complete and firm Californian Chardonnay, with ripe and juicy, almost tropical fruit, well-integrated oak and steely acidity, a lovely hint of cream, clean flavours, and good length. Works very well with a Caesar salad. Excellent QPR.

2008 Ludger Veit Dornfelder trocken "3 Jahre im Fass gereift"

Mosel Saar Ruwer more

7/26/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 85 points

Good colour, blueberry and black cherry fruit, no lack of ripeness, but there is an element present of sweet-and-sour and the palate is a bit bitter and drying; the slightly acrid finish has the metallic note that is customary for this grape variety and some back-end heat from the 14% ABV. Decent as a red Mosel, not too bad as a Dornfelder, but the word pedestrian does come to mind. No elegance.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc; 22 months in French oak, 14.5% ABV, IWSC Gold 2012. Magnum. Solid, firm, flavoursome, blackcurrant and cigar box, spices and red meat, traces of back-end heat. A bit dull.

Fresh, pure, cherries and violets, hint of bubblegum, carbonic maceration clearly in evidence, light and bright but soft and easy, clean flavours, lactic, nice length.

Rich and sombre colour, mature appearance; deep and warm nose, vinous, mature, toasted chestnuts, red meat, black olive, with subtle notes of black pepper, violets and cassis; rich and fleshy palate, ripe but lively acidity, largely resolved tannins still provide grip, rounded but sober and masculine, broad shoulders; good length.

A blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. Simple and forward wine, flavours of red apple, its freshness (7.4 gr/l TA) unfortunately more than balanced by the residual sugar (8.8 gr/l), to leave an impression of blandness and flabbiness. Not my style.

2013 Dominio de Punctum Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Viento Aliseo

Viognier more

7/26/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 86 points

A wine with interesting specifications; a biodynamic, organic, Viognier from Spain's sunny La Mancha region, the third vintage produced at this domaine, with a moderate 13% ABV. In the glass it is interesting too: fresh and clean style, remarkably crisp and cool for a wine from Spain's arid central plain, medium body, lime and herbs, but with sufficient varietal character (honey, peach, white flowers) and good length. Drink youngest vintage available.

From the "Junge Wilde" series. Fermented in stainless steel and a small portion in wood; 13% ABV, 6.9 gr/l TA, 6 gr/l RS. Bright, crisp and clean wine, needs a little time in the glass to express its varietal character, gooseberry and grass, hint of mango, melon, savoury note on the palate, nice stuffing, good length. Solid performance.

1994 Skeffington Porto Vintage

Port Blend more

7/26/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 91 points

After a flawed bottle last year, this (pristine) bottle is showing well. Mature but lively appearance, ruby red core, some browning at the edges; pure style and clean lines but also some alcoholic heat, currants, good core of sweet cherries, red berries and milk chocolate, cedar, medium weight and concentration, displays the juicy ripe fruit and freshness of the vintage and the concomitant soft tannins, good length. Not a very complex wine, but has comfortably entered its plateau of maturity; drink over the next 5-10 years.

Black cherries and dark chocolate, ripe fruit, quite stalky on the nose; fresh and vibrant acidity, delicately sweet, soft and ripe tannins, juicy, pure and intense flavours; good length, but finishes with considerable heat. Solid VP, drinking well now, but not refined and not for the very long term.

Raw, dry, stalky and bitter nose; raw and hot palate, like eating cocoa powder infused in alcohol. Better on the second day, but still hot and with strong notes of liquorice. I have encountered this fault before and I used to think it was brett-related. Recently I was told however that this is not the case, but no credible alternative explanation was offered. Anyone?

A private tasting (Restaurant De Burgemeester *, Linschoten, Netherlands): Medium colour, cherry red, purple rim; very pure and precise nose, fragrant and attractive, spiced peach, slightly toasty oak, violets, roses from the stalks; flowing and elegant palate, less powerful and majestic than the recently tasted Clos Vougeot 2012 but more silky and refined, beautifully integrated tannins, excellent balance; very good length.

A private tasting (Restaurant De Burgemeester *, Linschoten, Netherlands): A blend of Les Casses-Têtes and Les Murgers de Monthélie. Lovely colour, pale but intense; complete and harmonious nose, deep, floral top notes, slightly toasty but otherwise no noticeable oak; energetic and balanced palate, fresh and mineral, complete, bright acidity, perfectly integrated oak, interesting nuance; very good length.

2013 Domaine Patrick Javillier Meursault Cuvée Les Clousots

Chardonnay more

7/21/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 91 points

A private tasting (Restaurant De Burgemeester *, Linschoten, Netherlands): A blend of Les Clous and Les Crotots, hence Clousots. Fresh and elegant style, much more refined than the Tillets, slender and compact, still a bit closed, slightly salty minerality, perfectly integrated oak, playful, tightly wound, almost Riesling-like finesse, a lovely wine but needs a few years. Pure but lacks some weight in the Meursault context.

A private tasting (Restaurant De Burgemeester *, Linschoten, Netherlands): Again a slightly deeper colour than expected; lovely nose, open, nice and mealy, hint of peach, toasty, good Meursault typicity; the palate is round and supple, youthful acidity, slightly more rustic than the Puligny Levrons, but better oak integration at present than the Puligny; savoury finish, good length.

Attractive, lovely style.

A private dinner (Restaurant Chez Bruce *, Wandsworth, London, UK): Lively appearance, starts to brown at the edges; explosive nose, bursting with red berry fruit, fruity black pepper, granite, thyme, lifted floral aromas, precise, transparent and deep, still quite primary; medium weight, does not lack concentration but focuses on elegance and finesse in this lighter vintage, silky texture, lovely spicy warmth, subtle grip from beautifully ripe tannins; complete finish, very good length. A feminine Hermitage that resembles a Côte Rôtie in its expression. Loses its fragrance and finesse after some 90 minutes, so definitely not one for the decanter. Merveilleux.

7/18/2015 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 96 points

A private dinner (Restaurant Chez Bruce *, Wandsworth, London, UK): A study in silky finesse, elegance and style, a perfectly seamless and harmonious wine, lemon peel and oyster shell, white flowers, supported by a hint of warmth from the wood, subtle but intense, dances across the palate, salty minerality, completely effortless, dangerously drinkable. I said it three years ago and I am repeating it today: only Clos, only Raveneau. Marvellous.
