2012 Relic Wines Petite Sirah Old Vines

Napa Valley more

4/12/2015 - Crunge Likes this wine: 92 points

Very enjoyable, even this young. Lacks the strong pepper that made the 2009 so unique, but more concentrated than the 2010. This dark, brooding wine shows dark berries, earth, cocoa, and stone. No hint of oak. Wonderful on the nose and palate, my gf and I both enjoyed immensely. Let it age another 1-2 years and enjoy over the next 5-10.

Disappointing. Almost no fruit in this rather flat, slightly bitter wine. From a magnum and consumed from a decanter over four hours, the wine never budged from its position as a one-dimensional and completely unimpressive wine. I have one more magnum and hope this was just an off bottle.

Not a fruit-forward wine, but a layered, nuanced wine with excellent flavors. Think more Silver Oak than Caymus. The aromas were of red berries and just a bit of funk (but in a good way.) The flavors were red berries, a bit of oak, and a touch of earth. Medium-full bodied with an excellent finish.

Fairly expensive, saved for a special occasion, and it was spoiled. Aromas and flavors of musty socks. This was from a magnum just like Rhone Ranger's note below. That is a lot of CdP to pour down the drain.

2010 Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

12/24/2014 - Crunge Likes this wine: 93 points

Paired against a 2008 Cade Howell Mountain. Two tasters preferred the Cade, two the Altamura, but we all agreed both were excellent.

This wine was more restrained than the Cade. While the Cade has strong fruit flavors, the Altamura is more subtle. A serious, complex wine. Red berries, a hint of oak, and some earthiness round out this wine. Drinking well now, but should have 10-15 years ahead of it.

Paired against a 2010 Altamura. Two tasters preferred the Cade, two the Altamura, but we all agreed both were excellent.

This wine had a wonderful aroma and flavors of dark red fruits and just the right amount of vanilla. Layered, well structured, and delicious. A long finish with fading fruit flavors. This is one of the best balanced wines I've had.

The wine did have a lot of sediment, so be sure to decant carefully.

Both my gf and I really enjoyed this. Upon opening, the aroma of cherries and raspberries were immediately evident. Upon tasting, it hit us as sweet at first and had a finish with plenty of heft and a fair amount of pepper. Smooth but full-bodied, well-balanced with no alcohol burn. A long finish closed it out. We drank this paired with a variety of cheeses and found it to be excellent.

Much better on day two, so I'll leave the remaining bottles for a while. My girlfriend did not like this on day one but really enjoyed it on day two. I liked it a bit on day one but also loved it on day two. On day one, it was a bit harsh and the flavors were muted and masked by some metallic overtones. On day two, the flavors of dark fruit were front and center, with a long finish and no heat from the alcohol.

I'm a big fan of Howell Mountain cabs so I was interested in trying this. The nose was full of dark fruits but also a lot of alcohol. The flavor was heavy on the oak, evidenced by a lot of vanilla that masked the fruit. My girlfriend frowned and said, "Interesting," even though she's enjoyed the Cade Howell Mountains and Robert Craig Howell Mountains I've served. Decant for a couple of hours or, ideally, give it a year or two in the cellar.

An excellent, spicy Petite Sirah. Inky black in color and hits the nose with spice and fruit. Not quite as peppery as the Relic Petite Sirah Old Vines, but has the body and flavor to stand up to the chicken curry soup with which it was paired. A long finish compliments this well-balanced, full-bodied wine. Just an amazing QPR.

Color me impressed. What a great QPR. This is an excellent pizza wine. It lacks the barnyard of a Peagu CdP, but it is smooth and very tasty. No harsh tannins, no harsh aftertaste, no funk. I love Pegau CdP, but this is a great change when you want an easy drinker. I'll keep this around to serve for those times I don't need a serious wine.

The first half was consumed over an hour without food, while the second half was paired with roast duck breast. The nose was fairly muted, revealing some wood, a little spice, and plenty of alcohol. The flavor was huge, with a lot of body revealing dark fruits, and the alcohol stayed in check. The finish was long and somewhat biting. I liked the wine, and my girlfriend raved about it, but I prefer the 2003 Pegau CdP to this. It was good, but didn't blow me away like it did Parker and several of the reviewers here.

Tasted side by side with the 2008 and found this to be too young. This has an edge to it that should smooth out over time. Nice flavors and I finished it off with a pizza, which was a good pairing for this wine where it stands now.

Compared side by side with the 2012, and my gf and I both preferred the 2008. Nice ripe zinfandel flavors, much smoother than the 2012, likely due to the additional age. Well balanced, low tannins. Some sediment but no issues if you're careful. This wine won't wow anyone, but it's enjoyable with a decent meal.

I waited a year to try the second bottle, as I found the first one too tannic for my tastes. This one was still tannic but much better. It had a very strong aftertaste as well.

On day one I just had a glass on a pop and pour. The nose was a mess but the flavor wasn't bad. However, on day two the flavors had faded a bit but so had the harshness of the aftertaste. It was then that I discovered the secret: I paired it with a steak. I didn't notice the tannins at this point and found it much more enjoyable.

I'll wait another year for the next bottle.

2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary

Napa Valley more

6/21/2014 - Crunge wrote: 83 points

When I drink a Caymus, I usually know what to expect. Caymus is one of the in-your-face, oaky fruit bombs. There's nothing wrong with this style, and when you're in the mood for power over subtlety, Caymus is usually a safe choice.

For me, the 2012's fruit is hidden by oak at this point. On a pop and pour, the nose and flavor were all vanilla. I like vanilla and don't mind it in my wine as one of the flavors, but I don't care for it as the dominant flavor. Over the course of an hour, the vanilla changed to coconut. Strong, unpleasant coconut.

After a night sealed with a Vacu Vin, the vanilla had faded ever so slightly. It was still the dominant flavor, and fortunately the coconut didn't reappear.

There is an undercurrent of black cherries and plum, but the vanilla is far too strong at this point for my tastes. The rest of my bottles will sit for a year or more to see if it mellows out.

In 1984, Wendy's started an ad campaign with the now-famous tagline, "Where's the beef?" This bottle reminded me of that.

It's clearly the strangest bottle of "wine" I've ever had. On a pop and pour, I took a whiff as I always do and smelled... absolutely nothing. Seriously. Nothing. I then got the wine almost touching my nose and breathed deeply. I smelled... nothing. I could feel the burn of some alcohol, so I know there was something in there.

Next, I tasted it. Nothing. No berries, no wood, no musty insole from an old shoe. Over the next two hours I consumed the whole bottle. I did get a nice buzz so it had alcohol, but there was no flavor at all. In fact, I even had a bite of dark chocolate just to see if it was me, but the chocolate tasted just fine.

If you like water with red food coloring and then spiked with alcohol, this is for you. If you like wine, look elsewhere.

I'm normally a big fan of this wine and gave the previous bottle a 93. This bottle, unfortunately, wasn't anything special. The nose and flavors were both muted. There was nothing bad about it, just nothing particularly good. I was happy with the previous bottle even at the price, but this bottle was clearly not worth the premium price. I have two more and will revisit in 6+ months.

Day 1 - PnP. Despite the inky dark color, the nose was full of cherries. Sure enough, the flavor was all red fruit, which was unexpected. The medium to full body was smooth and round, but the aftertaste was bitter. The score would have been higher but the aftertaste was too strong to ignore.

Day 2 - My gf took one sip and said it tasted like cherries. Fortunately, the bitterness was gone and it was better. I'll leave the remaining bottles for a year and try again. I expect a higher score by then.

Certainly different from most Syrah's. Lighter in color and flavor. Lacks the jamminess of an Aussie Shiraz.

What it does do, it does well. Cherries on the nose, and delicious red fruit flavors. No pepper or other spices. Extremely well balanced and silky smooth tannins. Very enjoyable and I'm sorry to see my last bottle gone.

It's too early to drink, for me. Excellent nose of dark berries and the flavor is there, but the tannins are rough at this point. I'll let the other bottles sit for a year to see if the tannins start to integrate. It was better on day two (sealed with a Vacu Vin overnight) but it wasn't enough to avoid the chalky, sandy mouthfeel.
