1986 Château Lynch-Bages

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

I was very, very skeptical of this bottle as the cork was leaving much to desire in terms of structural integrity, though, thankfully (!), it turned out fine. Fine may be an understatement- it was excellent! The tannins are very round and sweet and the fruit notes are lovely, with a lot of cooked black fruits, cedar, sweet earth and wet, sweet pipe tobacco. Totally enjoyable, totally lovely and I totally wish I had more. If nothing else, these oldies are so fun to drink because alcohol levels are reasonable, meaning that splitting a bottle with someone doesn't leave you looking for the cab number...

2011 Clos des Brusquières Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Red Rhone Blend more

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 points

The nose of this wine is all fruit; plenty of blue and black fruits (both fresh and cooked). The palate shows more fresh herbs, licorice, fennel and spice. This is a very silky, polished and modern showing from Clos des Brusquieres.

I thought this was excellent CdR and possesses great value for me. Very lovely wine with fresh lavender, soft fruit and an easy demeanor about it. The finish is long and the mouthfeel is round and caressing.

2011 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes

Red Rhone Blend more

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 points

This wine reminds me of Chinese food, with the sweet/spicy notes of duck fat, grease, fresh and dried herbs and a long finish. It is full bodied and deep, with lots of character. I've never had Chante le Merle before but I am now looking forward to trying other vintages.

2011 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition

Red Rhone Blend more

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 points

Very round and very ripe with plenty of upfront fruit and a dark, full bodied mid-palate (my guess is because of the Mouvedre). Plenty of heat and red pepper on the tip of the tongue and following into the finish, this is a spicy style CdP.

Very typical, if not the most exciting CdP of the year. Blackberry, blueberry and further blue fruits along with cooked fruit and compote. Perfectly Fine CdP.

This is declassified Lirac and, next year, will be called Lirac. Very sweet fruit with a lot of acid and a pickle of heat on the tip of the tongue. Kind of basic and easy drinking.

Stinky and rustic with animal and wet hay notes as well as plenty of soft fruit, wood and earth. Fennel and leek flavors are in the finish of moderate length and intensity.

More classically styled than many of the other CdP, this shows dried fruit extracts, sweet spices, cinnamon, clove, Djarum cigarettes, graham crackers, blueberry, blackberry and currants. A new producer to me that I’m going to pay attention to.

Sweet and spicy with plenty of primary red and black fruits and red and black pepper. This is perfectly good, not great, CdR that will provide plenty of drinking pleasure.

I liked this wine but I typically find way more business about the Boislauzon CdP and this was a bit of a disappointment (particularly when I found out that they didn't make '11 Quet or Tintot and everything went into this!). The wine shows muscle and is full bodied but that appears to be the dominate trait as opposed to fruit, spice or style. Missed the mark for me.

2011 Château Sixtine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

White Rhone Blend more

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 91 points

Admittedly, I prefer CdP blanc with Viognier in it, but this has lots of the tropical flavors that I look for like Saturn peach, Anjou pear and sweet white fruits. I found a very pronounced note of pineapple lifesaver gummy that I really liked. The medium acid is perfect for this wine

This is dark, rich, serious and brooding with lots of plum sauce, dark, sweet spices and extracted fruit. Very full bodied and juicy and the finish is long and spicy. The best of the Chateau Sixtine wines in '11.

I didn't find this wine to be nearly as exciting as nearly any of the other '11 CdPs that I've had. I found it to be overly primary and sweet, with basic red and black fruits. Sure, '11 isn't '09 or '10, but there are still better wines to be had than this.

Kind of weird, I certainly wouldn't have guessed that a) these guys would make this and b) that this is a Southern Rhone wine. Very fruity and ripe, my biggest gripe is that the Merlot dominates the palate and doesn't let the Grenache shine like it should.

Very hot and spicy with lots of notes of earth and game. A medium bodied wine, I think it presents pretty good value. And, as an aside, I really like the direction of more and more CdR being Grenache based.

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Does not like this wine: 88 points

Admittedly, I tend to favor CdP blanc that show more (some!) Viognier, so this isn't necessarily my style. That being said, I though that the aromatics were restrained and basic and that the palate was too linear for CdP blanc. Basic minerals, and white fruit but none of the rounded unctuous texture and tropical fruit that I typically look for.

Showing Asiatic spices, Thai food, blue and black fruits, pie crust, graham cracker, brown sugar and plenty of red pepper flakes. One of the better and more aromatically complex '11 CdPs for me.

I found this to be the most fruit driven of the Rousseau lot. A rich and densely packed wine, I found lots of blueberry, blackberry, silky palate and youthful (duh!) tannins. A very caressing wine, it doesn't have the complexity of the Chambertin but is wonderful nonetheless.

An interesting wine and a paradox in a bottle- I found the nose to be very expressive and delightful with lots of spice, coffee cake, chicory and lots of berries but the palate was the most closed of the Rousseau wines, with basic wet earth and cooked black fruits. I wonder if the palate will open up over time? This is a wine to watch because, if the palate does flesh out, it could be amazing.

Wow. A big, dominant and powerful styled wine with lots of iron, graphite, earth, humus, rocks, minerals and tons of dark, brooding fruit. Currants, richness, meat and animal on the finish. The palate is velour like and very smooth, polished and rounded. A very big and very full bodied wine, it is a monumental showing and a candidate for wine of the vintage for me.

2011 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin

Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 91 points

Very closed at the moment- certainly the most closed of the Faiveley Grand Crus that I tasted. Nose and palate are both very restrained and show earth, animal, barn and humus. Fruit and spice are there but they are buried (and deep at that!). Needs at least 10-15 years of sleep before being woken.

The best showing Grand Cru of the night for me. Very fleshy and upfront, its like a puppy- just happy to see you. Very earthy and showing raked leaves, decomposing humus and fresh earth. This wine is more heavy handed with the fruit than the spice but it is a big boy nonetheless and will need lots and lots of time to settle and show properly.
