2011 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 93 points

Wow. A muscular wine for sure. Loaded with flavors of plum sauce, fresh herbs, barnyard, wet earth and sweet spices. Reminds me of Peking duck. A very big wine that shows on the palate but is very reserved on the nose.

Perhaps I'm biased as I've always loved this wine but I found this to be excellent. The wood plays a supporting role to the humus, wet leaves, moss and forrest flavors. Very wet earth-like and reminds me of what I think a tropical forrest would smell like.

This is my first experience with Faiveley Clos des Issarts (frankly, my first experience with Clos des Issarts in general) and I was very impressed- I'd like to see it in a great vintage. This is a bit more elegant with more spice and earth than upfront fruit. I got notes of clove, cumin, sweet curry, white, red and black pepper and a touch of heat on the finish as well.

2011 Faiveley Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 91 points

A lighter style with more red fruits and jam, this is not nearly as soft, round or plush as the "Les Porets Saint-Georges". Wonderful acid and grip in the palate and the finish is elegant with red and some black fruits as well.

Dark, full, juicy and more primary than many of the other 1er Crus, this shows lots of dried fruits, fruit cake, fatty game bird, and sweet spices. Very rich and full throttle, this is 60MPH out of the gate.

This is why I love Volnay so much. Gorgeous complexity on the nose with lovely red fruits, marmalade and extract and the palate has great acid, grip and tannins. A lovely wine that has all of the fruit and subtle spice that I love.

I always like this wine, in great and not so great years alike. A dark and pungent wine this has a full bodied nose with plum juice, raisin, dark spice, heat and red pepper notes.

This v. the Mercurey "La Framboisiere" is a wonderful case study in the difference between village and 1er Cru wines. This is just so much darker and fuller with prune, plums, blackberry jam, currants, clove and Indian spices.

Like candy. Raspberry, strawberry compote, gobs of primary red fruits. A touch simple and sweet but yummy.

Like many of the Grand Cru '11s, this is shut down (though it did give off more than most, as was true of Faiveley in general). Notes of barrel wood, coconut, beeswax and lanolin. The fruit is there but you have to dig deep. Has potential but very tough to evaluate today.

Flint, steel, chalk and lime dominate this high acid and tart wine. A touch of chalk dust and chalk board eraser are on the nose as well as flower leaves and buds.

Richer and rounder, my mind wouldn't have automatically gone to Meursault. Tropical fruit notes jump around as well as quince and a chalky, briney quality as well.

Another wine that I regularly feel is a gateway drug to White Burgundy. This shows well beyond its modest price tag with flavors of peach, pear, apricot, almond, lychee and tart lemon rind. The acid is high and tart and the finish is medium in length.

Entirely shut down at this stage and very difficult to rate. All I really got was notes of expensive wood which was explosive on the nose and a touch of white fruit on the palate. Very big and hedonistic at this stage (something I saw a lot of in the '11 Grand Crus). It certainly has a future but it's very hard to know what it will show.

My favorite wine of the 2011 Olivier Leflaive portfolio. Elegant and lively with pineapple, minerals, flint, apricot marmalade, ocean and salt. This has some QPR and should drink well soon upon release and for several years after.

Lovely, this was one of only a couple of standouts for the lineup. Simultaneously showy and delicate, this has lovely white stone fruits, white flowers, a touch of tropical fruit and zippy acid. It will drink well young.

Basic, simple and primary with easy white fruits, touch of pineapple and obvious minerals. The Leflaive wines aren't what they usually are in '11.

A disappointing vintage for this wine; one that I usually love. My first note was, "meh" followed by, "entry and basic". Simple white fruits with basic minerals, this is usually a wine of excitement and poise. Not so much.

Grilled bread notes show up along with honey, beeswax and white fruits on the nose though the palate is a bit disjointed with lots of Chablis-like flint. An odd style Meursault.

I always like this wine and think that it continues to be the gateway drug into White Burgundy. Smoke on the palate with ripe tropical fruit and orange pith. A lovely wine that is very high on my QPR.

The nose is very rich and fruity with the absence of traditional Chablis notes of flint but the palate is the opposite; very flinty, chalky and brine like with the addition of oyster shells and crushed rocks.

2008 Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

2/17/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 91 points

Very good Amarone though the 17 percent alcohol is quite noticeable both on the nose and on the palate. Hot spices, roasted lamb, heat, char and very dark fruit notes. A young wine, this is much, much better on day two (won't have any left but bet it would be even better on day three...) I'll be watching this one...

2006 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2/16/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 90 points

Very, very advanced for its age, this is Grand Cru Burgundy that is drinking at or near its peak. Pronounced menthol, mint and eucalyptus flavors dominate the palate as well as mild depth of fruit character. This is, simply put, good, not great Clos Vougeot.

1990 Simi Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve Alexander Valley

more

2/13/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 91 points

If I were to rate this purely on expectations, I'd give it 109. I was certain this would be a dud. So certain, that I'd completely written it off. I mean, let's be frank, the Simi wines of today are mediocre at best. At first sniff, I would have thought this was Pauillac with all of the tar, tobacco, earth, leather, currants, mulch, spice and richness. Huge amounts of sediment (about an inch off the bottom of the bottle needed to be poured out) but the was both a history lesson and a pleasure. I don't expect to find more bottles but the person who gave this to me got a very nice thank you today!
