I am a little surprised this is still good, but it seems at it's peak. It was medium bodied with a little mineral, cream, vanilla and pear. Fairly well balanced with light oak and mid finish.

I am glad I opened this now. It was nearly dark plum in color, but starting to show light brick around the rim. It still had a big nose that was full of plum & dark fruits with black pepper. It was nearly full body with a fair amount of tannins. It had a mid-finish and like a lot of old vine Zins, it could have fooled me in a blind tasting since it tasted like a Cabernet.

Nice New Zealand Pinot. It turned out much better than I thought since it should be past it's prime. It is time to drink my last bottle as well. It was a ruby red with a little fruit, pepper, earth and tannins. Medium bodied with a mid finish.

Drank this at the Last Sunset Symphony on banks of Mississippi River. Very refreshing and dry. I am not a big Rose drinker but had been told this was a good, dry Rose.

This is an excellent Chardonnay. It is very nicely balanced with honeysuckle, lemon and tropical fruit on the nose. It is full bodied and mid palate has light butterscotch and orange with a little mineral and oak. The finish is nice and mid-length.

We had this at dinner celebrating Janet’s birthday at Capital Grille. It was a very nice Pauillac- dark in color with a little purple. It had graphite, cedar, mushrooms and earth on the nose. Mid palate was smoke, dark cherry and earth. It was medium bodied and nicely structured with acidity and tannins. The finish was mid length.

A nice golden color with apple, pineapple, and pear on the nose. Full bodied with slow legs. Mid palate was buttery with hints of vanilla, nuts and toast. The finish was long and still full of tropical fruit. Paired with Scallops.

2007 Hendry Cabernet Sauvignon Hendry Vineyard

Napa Valley more

2/28/2015 - Alpha L Likes this wine: 91 points

Hendry is one of my favorite “go to wines” for a trip to a restaurant. This was a beautiful dark raspberry with blackberry, raspberry and spice on the nose. I decanted it for an hour before leaving for the restaurant. Mid palate was full of more dark fruit with a little cedar and pepper. It was nicely balanced with good tannins on the tongue. It had a long finish leaving you wanting another glass.

This is a nice wine with dark red fruits as well as blackberry. Based on earlier notes, I decanted it and that made a difference. It was a dark purple with medium body. A little chocolate on the palate as well. A nice balance of acid & tannins giving that leather feeling and had a good medium finish. A good wine for the price.

1982 Château Carbonnieux

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/19/2015 - Alpha L Likes this wine: 91 points

This was a very nice Pessac Leognan, but I believe it has started down hill (at least my bottle). I was going to take it for Janet's birthday at the Capital Grille, but I tried it undecanted and decanted and decided to take a 2002 Rothschild instead. As Zavier wrote in 2011, it was a tired wine and I felt decanting pushed it even more. I could still taste what this wine really was and it was very nice. A Bordeaux with earth, tobacco, smoke, herbs, mushrooms and pepper. It was a little light and the finish was relatively short.

Very purple with some cherry and red berry forward. Mid palate very little acid or tannin to help balance. The finish was short. All in all, not a favorite wine even at the price.

This was a mid-bodied to light, pale gold in color Chardonnay. It had a slight nose of crisp fruit and mid-palate was a little oak with small amounts of butter. The finish was a short, but for the price it is not a bad Chardonnay.

2009 Chateau Montelena Petite Sirah

Napa Valley more

1/20/2015 - Alpha L Likes this wine: 92 points

I opened, but did not decant and let it breathe for over an hour. Janet had the last glass and found it had a lot of sediment, so I would recommend decanting it. It was a beautiful dark inky purple and the bouquet was dark blackberry and blueberry. I love the way a good Petite Sirah balances the acid and tannin to create a nice velvety experience. It was near full bodied and mid palate was a little chocolate, oak and pepper with a little earth. The finish was long and the tannins were still lightly gripping at the end. This was an excellent Petite Sirah and I wish I had another bottle.

We found this bottle at a little grocery market in Thonon France where we were attending a wedding over Christmas. We left most of our bottles of good left & right bank wine in Croatia with friends while we traveled to Bosnia. Opened this on a snowy and cold night in Otzak, Bosnia. It was very clear mid ruby in color with a strong nose of dark cherries and black currant. It was medium bodied and the front palate was more currant, a little raspberry and plum with a lot of tannin and a thick velvet covering on the tongue. Mid palate was more red currant than black, a little toast, leather and oak. The finish was more current and leather and was very long. The wine is still very young and needs a few years of cellaring to blend all the aromas and flavors. I wish we had bought more.

We had this at Christmas dinner for the wedding of Pierre Grangeon and Jelena Milojevic in Thonon, France. The color was a light ruby red and the nose was chocolate and dark cherry. The front palate was dark cherry, black berries and red berries. It had a little earth, oak and dark fruit mid palate. It was well balanced with tannins and acidity and had a long finish. It paired nicely with morels, potato gratin dauphinois and chicken.

We had this wine for Christmas dinner for the wedding of Pierre Grangeon and Jelene Milojevic in Thonen, France, with relatives and friends. It was a pale yellow with full slow legs. The nose was nutty and sherry like. It was full bodied with a very dry front palate with more nuts and near bitter like a dry sherry. The French influence was evident with oak, and a little earth. it had good acidity and a medium finish. It paired perfectly with fig bread and duck foie gras.
