2012 Failla Chardonnay Keefer Ranch

Russian River Valley more

Stunning juice, very subtle, the fruit all wrapped up in minerals but in no way lacking in expressiveness, this is very complex right up front, loads of lemon and hazelnut, white tea, stones. Super sophisticated and long.

Round and fruity, with a mellow base of oak that doesn't intrude too much, and a nice dried apricot quality. A bit simple, but not bad at all.

Apparently this is a blend of all over, and the result is quite full flavored, all over 10 yrs (?), with round orange rind notes, a hint of Borderies nuttiness, a good base of oak. Round and attractive sipper.

2013 Ferrando Canavese Rosso La Torrazza

Nebbiolo Blend, Nebbiolo more

5/3/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

Even crunchier and fresher with more Alpine breeze and brighter red fruit, than the excellent 12. This bottle also had a distinct brett aroma of barnyard and fungus (aged goat cheese/rind is best way I can put it) that was offputting when I first pulled the cork, but blew off for the most part and became kind of a background hint, but it's still not for everyone unless it was just this bottle. Fantastic quality and character, though, very Alpine, and there are few wines better for pairing with pasta and charcuterie/cheese (and pizza, obviously).

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

5/3/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

Just bonkers good. Intensely aromatic with all the black cherry, vanilla, cedar, cigar, and soil you could ever want. Equally intense on the palate, full bodied, full throttle, really complete and with a dense & energetic core of fruit that will serve this wine well over it's super long life. Should last just about forever.

Fairly simple, there's plenty of ripeness and tannin here but I don't think it's really giving the whole picture (or at least not a $90 picture)

Totally gorgeous stuff. Very traditional, this is as ripe as it needs to be but with all the flavor very compact and tightly knit, yet well-defined and highly elegant, and based in minerality. The kind of wine that won't blow every taster away right now but when we come back in 2027 or so a lot of people are going to be writing "WOTN" in their tasting notes.

Quite ripe with plenty of tannin, skin and oak...especially oak, this is a relatively black fruity Cune, with lots of coconut Amer. oak, coffee bean, cigar, damp soil. It's honestly very attractive and the price is good.

Only 25% Xinomavro here, and you really just get a hint of it, enough to know you're drinking Greek. The rest is 50% Merlot and 25% Syrah, and it's aged in steel, so you get a pretty full, warm wine that's relatively soft but with a touch of Xinomavro tannin to it. For the money, it works.

Simple, crisp Italian white, perhaps with some green (green apple, herb) notes to compliment the citrus, but there's just not much here and it's a bit overpriced (in NY/tristate area, shelf price is $16-17)

5/3/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

Truly fantastic stuff, with a very classy, powerful, Bordeaux-like nose of black fruit and cedar and herb, quite dense and ripe (not overripe at all, and I'm glad not to see any heat or prune notes in this which are quite common in Bandol from a good year). 90-95% Mourvedre, partial de-stem, long maceration, large oak casks. Very, very well-composed.

Soil is mostly limestone, and the wine is fermented with native yeast in cement and aged in cement. Impressively weighty for it's price, vintage, and seeming dryness, very wooly and typical with lots of orchard and lime fruit.

2014 Liquid Farm Mourvedre Rosé Vogelzang

Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara more

5/1/2015 - yofog wrote: NR

Not quite the impact of the 13, which I really liked. At only 11.8%, this is a very light rose, with notes of watermelon, strawberry, and rose. It's certainly mineral and fresh and has a certain seamlessness that's pretty impressive. Highly guzzleable. Best with lots of air, or several days in the fridge after first opening, or maybe toward the end of this summer or even next summer, as it does eventually take on some more weight and the Mourvedre-ness becomes more apparent.
