Lots of cherry and sweet oak initially with a little heat. It mellows out quickly to reveal more of a melange of dark red fruits and well integrated oak with a touch of spice. Without food the tannins got very grippy after a short time in the glass but I popped some dark chocolate covered blueberries and the wine suddenly seemed very juicy. Overall a nice mid-week wine that is just starting to show some age with a barely perceptible sherry-like note in the background.

Delicious quaffer and excellent QPR. This will be my "patio pounder" of choice for the summer. Tart strawberry, fresh bread (yeast), hints of citrus and watermelon. Good acidity but there is also a roundness to the wine.

Eight days vacu-vin'd in the refrigerator and this has held up nicely. It always amazes me that a $10 device can do such a good job of preserving opened wine for a week or more. You can even use the Vacu-vin as a tool to see how a wine will age. Some of the funkier fringe notes dropped off this wine to reveal a more straight-forward Pinot with strawberry, black cherry, cassis, pie crust, nutmeg and mocha. Well balanced acidity and medium tannins on the medium+ finish. 90+

Vacu-vin'd for several days. The wine is now fruit forward with black cherry/cassis on the entry, mocha/allspice on the finish. The middle is kind of hollow, a "doughnut wine" and the body is a bit thin but it has noticeably improved overall with time/air.

Purchased July 2012. Apricot, toffee, peach syrup, citrus blossom, clover honey and some heat. Although it showed some signs of age on PnP, it still improved over the 3 days it took to drink it. Delicious!

Natural cork closure. On PnP the color is dark and inky like a Petite Sirah. Raspberry, currant and vanilla on the nose with some heat and a little toasty oak. There is also a vegetal component that I can't quite put my finger on.
Asparagus? (Hold the "Sideways" jokes, please ). On the palate, it's a tad harsh right out of the gate with noticeable heat and a bitter note that obscures the fruit somewhat. Let the swirling begin! After some air, the nose is still similar
to the initial PnP but the palate is starting to smooth out around the edges. It's not as hot and the bitterness has faded into the background (mostly) to reveal black raspberry, cherry, currant and vanilla toast. There is a bit of spice and
oak on the medium finish. Tannins are coarse but light. Pairs well with some Beehive cheese and may be best as a food wine. I prefer a fuller, more savory style of Syrah but this is not bad, especially for the asking price. Definitely
improves as it opens so give it some air or another year in the bottle.

PnP at cellar temp. Light sediment on the cork and a small amount visible in the bottom of the bottle. Color is a light to medium shade of violet. Fruity nose with grape jelly and strawberry jam accompanied by lesser notes of wet straw, honey clover and something slightly minty, maybe camphor or eucalyptus... very subtle but noticeable. Strawberry, black cherry, pomegranate and cassis on the palate with sweet oak, medium tannins and a spicy pepper note on the medium+ finish. The spice lingers with good acidity adding some bite to it. There is a slightly funky after-taste. There is a lot going on both aromatically and on the palate with this wine yet it's a well-integrated and cohesive effort. It's also very quaffable.

Leesy nose with some citrus zest. Medium+ body with lemon peel, star fruit, marzipan and notes of oak and/or MLF. Could use a little more acidity, feels a little heavy overall but as it opens up it gains some minerality and spice which up the perceived acidity level somewhat. Preferred this cold, slight bitterness as it warmed. Perhaps what some refer to as an almond note?

PnP the wine shows its age right away with sherry-like aromas and flavors. With additional air time some of that blows off (surprisingly) to reveal raspberry jam, eucalyptus, cocoa and allspice with a touch of sweetness. Did not pair well with pizza (except for the crust). Drank half then capped and reopened 2 days later, aged notes appeared again and it was marginally drinkable. By the following day it had fallen completely apart. Should have vacu-vin'd instead of just recapping but still, this wine is fast approaching its use-by date.

Starting to oxidize but still enjoyable. Peach, apricot and lychee on the off-dry palate with enhanced minerality. Slightly bitter note on the mid-palate that blew off after some air. Just enough acid to carry through to the finish. Drink up.

PnP at cellar temp. Light ruby, almost translucent in the glass. Initially, the nose was straight up grape jelly. On the palate, ripe red fruits on the entry segway into peppery spice on the back end. Somewhat unusual for a Sonoma Pinot but this was a chameleon wine which was just starting to evolve. After 5-10 minutes in the glass and some swirling, the nose and palate became a little more subtle. The alcohol (14.5%) started to show and the peppery spice became more prominent. It was still fruit forward at this point but not as much so. Another 5-10 minutes in, the pepper started to dominate and the wine suddenly became quite tannic. It wasn't showing especially well at this point but..... another 5-10 minutes and voila! It had changed again, this time for the better. The heat subsided and the wine smoothed out considerably. The fruit and spice were working together in harmony. The wine was much different now than it was on PnP. Mostly cherry on the nose but quite nuanced, nothing like the in your face grape jelly we noted initially. Cherry on the palate as well with a touch of raspberry and strawberry. More of a transition between the fruit and spice now, filling in the middle of the wine. Previously the spice had just stepped right in and taken over for the fruit but now there was some overlap, giving the wine added complexity. The tannins were much better integrated as well. This turned into a very nice wine after going through some growing pains in the first 30 minutes. Recommend decanting if you don't want to go through the initial phases although it was an interesting experience.

Recorked overnight and poured a little sippy sip this morning to add some day 2 notes; Hardly getting anything on the nose now but the wine has gained additional complexity palate-wise with the oak influence starting to show along with a richness that I didn't notice last night. Not MLF I don't think, but a slight creaminess to the texture/mouthfeel that I quite like, especially combined with the fruit, spice and touch of oak. The wine didn't change nearly as much overnight as it did during the first 30 minutes in the glass but it definitely has continued to evolve.

Magnum - fragile cork, use care when opening. PnP through aerator. The wine is clear and free of sediment, color is dark reddish brown starting to brick. Cherry, currant, mild oak and a little heat on the nose. Wine is still a bit tight despite aeration, could have used an hour in the decanter. It started to open up in the glass with some additional swirling. Cherry, currant, cassis, leather and some spice on the palate. Tannins are firm. Medium+ body, medium+ finish. Very nice, wish I had more.

Dark, inky color. Fruity nose of cherries and wood. A little hot on PnP with palate similar to nose, dominated by cherries with some toasty oak. Medium body, medium finish. Drank over several days, vacu-vin'd in between, it developed additional tannins and spice notes each day (and strangely, the oak became less toasty) although it also fell apart after 2 hours in the glass on day 2 so drink soonish.
