2007 Forsyth Brio Cabernet Sauvignon

Red Mountain more

5/24/2015 - Neecies Likes this wine: 90 points

Don's bottle. En pointe cabernet sauvignon for Red Mountain and has a good resolution of power and finessse for a 2007--didn't taste as ripe as most do, yet it wasn't a weakling. Was surprised to taste so good a wine from a producer I've not heard of before.

Not nearly as far along as the bottle opened a month ago. That one I would have said drink up by 2017, this one has--er, had--until 2020 or beyond.

Columbia Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/24/2015 - Neecies Likes this wine: NR

Did not show as well as a bottle a few months ago, but wasn't flawed. Just tighter, less giving on the midpalate and therefore showing more tannins on the finish. If this typical, wait another year.

A big and rich style of Sauvignon Blanc with plenty of acidity and structure. Impressive, drinks well above it's price.

Outstanding nose. Vivid notes of grapefruit, gooseberry and tarragon carry through to the palate. Drinks well now, but will be even better in two years.

The fruit's meager and the acidity isn't, so it's a bit off balance for a sipper. Drinkable, but needs food.

1986 Château Meyney

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

This is just a nice old Bordeaux heading into the sunset. We shared a bottle and enjoyed the second glass of three each best of all. Almost no sediment so didn't even decant.

PnP. Drinks well now, though it takes awhile for the alcohol to back off. Not showing much maturity yet. Will schedule remaining bottles for '18 and '20, pending others' assessments.

2013 Whitcraft Winery Pinot Noir Four Soils

Santa Barbara County more

5/16/2015 - Neecies Does not like this wine: NR

Buoyed by great memories of Chris Whitcraft's early 90's pinot noirs, we grabbed this off a market shelf while passing through Santa Barbara County. Very disappointing. Angular vs. harmonious and with odd bitter notes--not green/underripe, not TCA, and not iodine (though the wine had that, too) but something else unlike pinot noir as I know it. Not good.

Jura tasting (Mark's). Big, round and nutty with some smoke. All signs pointed to chardonnay, but it's a blend with savignin.

Jura tasting (Phaedra's). Almost clear in color, vivid nose of grapefruit and cat pea, white flowers, douglas fir, oyster shell minerality and lime peel. Blind, would have guessed New Zealand sauv blanc, and been pretty sure about it. Delicious and only 11.5%.

2009 Château D'Arlay Côtes du Jura Blanc Tradition

Savagnin, Traminer more

5/13/2015 - Neecies Likes this wine: 91 points

Jura tasting. Interesting, unique nose of Maggi seasoning (or Vegemite, to some), ripe fruit and a little sherry. On the palate, a very soft progression of apple, mango, maple and tamarind. Acidity was there but not aggressive--a very sensual, textural wine ideal for contemplation.

5/13/2015 - Neecies Likes this wine: 90 points

Jura tasting (my bottle). Big improvement over bottle opened a year ago. Sweet red fruit, slight barnyard hinting at some age, cherry cough drops, cinnamon and nutmeg. Drinks fine now but feels like a wine that could use 5-10 more years.

Pretty medium pink. Dried porcini mushroom nose with cassia bark and red apple skin on the palate. Finish shows RS as it warms in the glass. Fine pin-prick bubbles give initial great mouthfeel, but the wine lacks persistence.

Jura tasting, my bottle. This has apparently come around since Headless' review in 2011 because this is in a great place now. Yeasty, baked red apple and bear claw pastry make this a pretty rich and interesting sparkler. Bubbles are a bit large, but persistent. Only negative is that a tiny bit of sulfur on the nose actually intensified the longer the wine was exposed to air.

2012 Cavatappi Winery San Pietro

Columbia Valley Red Blend more

5/13/2015 - Neecies Likes this wine: 90 points

At Gabe's. Tongue-in-cheekly named after owner Peter Dow, this is a so-called Super-Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot, and it's damned good. Bigger fruit than we're used to from Cavatappi but appropriate for the grape blend and vintage, with spot-on balance and restraint.

5/12/2015 - Neecies Likes this wine: 88 points

Wasn't happy with a much-earlier bottle (2013) so was surprised to find this enjoyable. Airtime overcame an initial red-fruit jaminess with some black fruit structure and nice zin spice. Another 2-3 years in bottle might benefit.

1st day: Bombastic blueberry fruit, so hot it stings the lips. Do not pop n' pour like I did, dear reader! 3rd day: now this is more like it.
Blueberry and pomegranite, heat gone, a little minerality making an appearance. Finish has smoothed out. Remains more cocktail than food wine.

At J & A's. Big wine befitting vintage and producer, lavish lavish did I say lavish oak, a bit hot, but fruit has held on admirably for it's age. Controversial within our foursome: two thumbs way up, one neutral, one down (mine).
