7/29/2023 - MrBrege wrote: 92 pointsThis has gotten so much better since last I tried it. Tannins have softened but are still present. Surprisingly sophisticated throughout, with strength, balance and length of flavour. Perhaps this can still improve, but at the very least it will hold at this level for another 5 years or so. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

This case, bought in early 2021 has been a consistent disappointment though. The levels were good to very good, and the corks so far have been fine, without seepage. Yet none of the first six have been anything close to what they should have been and these last two were outright flawed, a brown liquid rather than just bricking. I will never buy older cases unless straight from the Chateau! |

12/17/2022 - MrBrege wrote: 94 pointsOne of the reconditioned bottles from the chateau, very pretty in fact, with a new label and all. This is the way to enjoy mature Bordeaux! No risk of misfire. A truly classic wine this, still fairly deep colour with just marginal bricking. Earthy old cellar and leather on the nose, the balance is great and the fruit mostly noticeable on the mid palate. Tannins almost fully resolved but still present, I think this will last at least another 5 years. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

7/20/2022 - MrBrege wrote: 94 pointsI always thought that this (and most other 2006s) were angular and not at all charming. Having not tried this since 2018 I decided to serve it with burgers when having a few friends over (who was going to complain in that setting?). But it was terrific now, smooth without being too sweet, almost a classic Bordeaux. Now I wish I still had the rest of my bottles left. |

7/5/2022 - MrBrege wrote: 94 pointsPnP. This is lovely and mature now. A nose to die for, even with no time in the glass. Gorgeous fruit on the attack, sweetness and wonderful balance on the mid-palate, and a long beautiful finish. Tannins mainly resolved. Hard to believe this is a 2007. Will still last a few years I imagine but there is no reason to wait, it can't get better than this. |

Such a a smooth and elegant wine, still packs a punch though with really good balance that stays harmonious right through to the long finish. An excellent modern left bank wine! |

7/24/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 94 pointsThis terrific wine is at peak, and seems to be staying there for several years to come. Some very marginal bricking, damp cellar on the nose but wonderfully fresh tertiary flavour. Everybody liked it, including my youngest son Sam, who is not easily pleased when it comes to red wines. This, fairly humble, classified left banker indicates how terrific the better wines (like LLC etc.) from this vintage will be one day. The 1996s are still a buy. |

7/18/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 94 pointsFirst bottle out my first case. Dark and brooding. Still very young with barely any secondary notes even on the nose, but delicious!! Tannins well present but not at all harsh. Wonderfully concentrated, one of the most concentrated wines I think I have ever tasted, a truly big wine. The finish goes on for minutes literally, quite remarkable. Others may score it even higher than I do, it will give the US Cab fruit-bombs a run for their money, while actually being quite sophisticated, although "elegant" is not the word I would use here. 5 people found this helpful, do you? 3/4/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 93 pointsReally pretty good wine. It is still a little tight even on day 2; starting of with intensity of fruit and decent balance, which holds up well in the mid-palate. The finish is a bit short given the strength of initial flavours and it goes slightly out of balance at the end with a sort of tart and acidic ending. 2 people found this helpful, do you? 2/14/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 92 pointsThe nose of this indicated decline, or at least a much older wine, with particular notes of prune rather than the expected red and dark berries. The bottle was purchased by a merchant a couple of years ago so may not have been kept very well. But in the mouth it was fresh, well balanced and very smooth. Would have been 93-94 if not for the nose. I've had much better examples of the wine, although not this vintage. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2/3/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 93 pointsThis, for once, is a wine that the CT Drink-by info has gotten right. I bought a case of 6 recently and so far two have been clearly on the decline (prune nose and tired palate) and two have been great. This bottle was one of the good ones, with a mature yet vibrant and fresh nose, an excellent palate with plenty of fruit balanced with acidity and still some well integrated tannic back-bone. Yes, I get the comment about the oak being noticeable, but I don't mind it as much as some. I would not buy more of these, nor wait to long to uncork the rest of my bottles. |

1/27/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 92 pointsThis wine draws some very varied reviews... It's important to let it come to about 12 degrees temp centigrade at least, in fact it works almost better at 13-14. I think this is because it is still quite restrained, nothing at all on the nose at 8 degrees and at 10 you start getting vanilla, which grows with the temperature. On the palate again there is not much apart from the vanilla until you get to 12 degrees, but after that you get a bit more - layers of some exotic fruits, very pleasant. We drank this against the 2013 second wine (L'Esprit de Chevalier), which was the more approachable at lower temperatures. I don't know if this actually will open cup more or if it is designed to drink at closer to room temperature, other white Bordeaux wines have not been like this; I will wait a few years with the rest of my case. 2 people found this helpful, do you? 1/17/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 92 pointsHad the '89 against the '90. While we did prefer the 1990 (despite this not being the best bottle I've ever had), the '89 was very solid. Appearance is quite young, like many 89s, but with a wonderful tertiary nose. Less fruit, leaving it on the classic but more astringent side, but with good balance nonetheless. Finish rather short. We kept half the bottle but it was not much different on day 2 |

1/9/2021 - MrBrege wrote: 93 pointsRight in the middle of its drinking window and will last another 3-5 years. Smooth yet fairly powerful, especially for the vintage, and with a long finish. Tannins are fine but still present. Given the price (about 100GBP) it's hard to say that it is a great QPR, but probably one of the best for Trotanoy. I am happy I have a few more. |

12/2/2020 - MrBrege wrote: 93 pointsI like this producer and this vintage is wonderful, also from a QPR perspective (well for being Burgundy that is). It is still young as can be noticed from the rather high acidity, but importantly it is well in balance. There is intense and slightly unripe fruit on the attack, which mellows into a more full-bodied mid-palate, and then stretches into a long balanced finish. Extremely good with pulled pork sandwiches. |

10/16/2020 - MrBrege wrote: 88 pointsThis has a great nose but otherwise I'm not impressed, especially as this is a Grand cru (although the rather low price indicates the lack of greatness). Possibly I am drinking it too early (then again I have 11 more...), but it is thin and a bit watery almost on the palate with too much acidity. I will hope for it to mellow over time but am far from optimistic given the lack of concentration of fruit. I drank it alongside a Kumeu River Hunting Hill, also a 2014, and there was absolutely no contest as this is so much better at about the same price.... |

10/31/2020 - MrBrege wrote: 95 pointsDrank this truly sublime wine with the Johansson's at Halloween, paired with lobster rolls. The nose had classic white Burgundy notes but was somewhat muted compared to the explosion of flavours on the palate. The vanilla (from the oak) is dominant on the attack, but while I absolutely detest over-oaked chardonnays this was amazingly balanced and the flavours perfectly integrated. Immediately after the vanilla your moth is filled with fruit, a lot of it tropical in style bringing the mind temporarily to South African wines, but the texture of the wine takes you right back to Meursault - it really IS "creamy". How can a wine be creamy (but not cloying)? I'm not sure, but it is major success and perfect for drinking now. I think it's drinking window is significantly longer than 2021, but it is unlikely to get better than this. |

10/3/2020 - MrBrege wrote: NRThis was terrific a year ago, now not so much. I wish I had read some of the recent notes by my fellow CT members. This wine has shut down almost completely; it's not overly tannic only very muted (both on nose and on palate) and lacking in fruit all of a sudden This leaves it unbalanced with an acidic finish. Surprisingly it did not improve when slow-oxed until day 2. Will not touch it until another CT-writer gives the all clear... 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (4) |
