I took the chickenheads at school during debate class. I think that it was 5th period, but it was one of those days where the classes were swapped so it was really the last class of the day. I was talking to this stuck up girl who was in wonder of the freedom that i represented, but was wary of the potential appearance of waywardness that was commonly associated with my position.

It came on strong of cranberries and raspberry juice and zippyness and cartoons and fractals and even more acid (self references? fractal. fractals?). flowers and daisys and a meadow but not meadow soprano more like a crown of flowers on a blonde with a white sun dress on. the idea of frebreze because of the purity but not hte chemicals like eidelweiss

And it was a ocean spray commercial at a dead show and it was scarlet>fire and there was that moment where you looked at the crowd and everyone was shaking their bones at once and there was that synchronicity and you were in the matrix and then your mom found you naked in the backyard before Jon Steryn picked you up for band practice and you had a "lot of explaining to do".

You start off, alone. You're excited, youthful. Coldsnap groundswell roars up and down the beach. You strip off your trunks and climb into your wetsuit, still salty from last time. Stepping into the water you're surprised by the lightness of the waves, their size a compensation for their power. Light, but with sharp attack.

As you swim out , you reach mid-break and see the waves exploding on the second, deeper sandbar. You decide to wait and see where to best paddle. You're counting the seconds in between the waves and youre focused and purposeful.

You wait.

You wait.

You lay down and move forward into the waves. Heavy, dense, but still possessing that clarity that only a groundswell produces. You move under the 1st one. Water is colder than you imagined. Something deep is upwelling. You pop up out of the water and see a set approaching. You aim back towards shore and paddle.

In life, waiting is rewarded immensely. What starts off light, cheery, mundane evolves into a deep, complex, and individual expression.

Dark fruit, tar, pepper, olive brine, the taste of a freshly scraped arm in your mouth, acid but real acid not lsd, floating, how your daughter looks at you in the eyes. This wine will reward time.

10/17/77-Wharf Rat. Starts off like any normal WF, but textures and textures of music, psychedelia, and emotion build till the end. Nod to Jer.

Hot day in the Smokies. With wifer, her sister, and her dad. We’d been out for nearly seven days at this point. Subsisting on augmented rice-a-roni meals with added cheese, oil, and nuts for the calories. The beauty helped too. The last night we’d seen a bear and at dawn, through the fog that covered the meadow that our campground was located, a deer and its babies strolled passed. Eye contact was made with all in the shelter, but not a word was spoken.

Later that day on the trail, heat set in heavy. The trail was dusty…it hadn’t rained in weeks. We’d been ascending all day through the foothills, but now we were heading up to the peak. Rhododendrons all around, tall enough to block the view, but not enough to shelter you from the sun, which by this point was nothing less than a celestial inferno.

It was only two to three minutes into the climb that I noted that my sister-in-law, Jaime, was starting to get aggressive..Jumping a little. Hooting and hollering.

I quickened my pace to the top. I think that I was about 20 meters in front of her before she noticed that I wanted to play too…She sped up.

We ran up that mountain, laughing and yelling and taunting. Wifers and dad in the back, making fun of whoever had fallen behind at that moment.

Heart beating so quickly. Legs feel good, but mouth so dry and ready. End not in sight. Keep going.

The trail narrows in places, making places for advances hard, but in the last patch before the clearing at the top, it widened significantly. Although we were always competitive, we leveled each other and crossed simultaneously.

Waiting for dad and wifers at the shelter at the top, we moved into our packs for some snacks.***Begin metaphorical wine description here*** A boysenberry/blackberry fruit leather and a chocolate bar. We move into both at once.

Waves of fruit with some warm sweet jamminess comingling with a creamy but leathery deep cocoa note. Dustiness, leather, and cigar box filling the air. Our breaths a perfume of fruit, heat, and coating satiation. A little warmer than I usually like, but the right time, right place, right notes, right people…***end wine metaphors***

Rest of the trip was a blur. Spent a nite in a shelter with a former convict. He had a fuuny accent.

7/8/99 Fee: You’ve heard this one before..other producers, same vineyard…This one blows you away. Novelly Trancendent, but true to what it is. Mikes Bell as the jam is taking off is exactly like the finish on this wine…it kicks right when it needs to.

There was just a touch of heat to the day when we left Valencia in our rented fiat. We started with some pavement, then moved into parliament funkadelic and then finally settled on dead 5/8/77, which neither of the ladies in back had ever heard.

We had just left the city limits on the autoroute when the road switched from a six lane urban artery to a two lane road through the hills mainly used for trucks and goats.

Bright cherry overtones from the schnapps we were passing around the car mixed with the leathery and chocolatey mota that filled the car with its thick and heavy scent as we smoked it. Light and high noted, we developed a routine. We'd speed up to the dieziocho wheeler in front of us, chuck some schnapps, and then gun it in the lane next to the truck around a blind corner yelling and screaming en espanol until we passed the truck and were back in our lane. My wife would yell at us as being immature, and we just drank more.

Spent 3 nights sleeping in a car in pamplona. bulls. running. sangria. M got lost in pamplona in a drunken rage and we found her the next day. somebody took a dump next to the car we were "staying in".

Show: 5/8/77. Finesse. Power. Classic, but not the best you've ever heard. People will talk about this in the future.

A cold front had just come through, so my buddies and I decided to get up early and go surfing before school. The air was crisp and clean. You could smell the gusts of wind as they caroused through the lemon groves northwest of us. The ride to the beach was quiet. A joint was passed.

I hit the water and with the first duck-dive an electric shock tingled though my hair and down to my rapidly freezing toes. I was in it now. This is why we do it.

Good morning surfing. Head high sets, howling at each other as we rode. Making others in the lineup laugh.

I was standing @ trader joe's while huffing paint thinner through a rag when i spied this beauty on the shelf. I hallucinated a Pan archetype, phallic and strong. It called to me. When I encountered my lord I noticed that it was a mere 1.5 L bottle of north coast meritage. My antlers twinged in glee.

My score inclined me to throw a party that night to consume said bottle. Calls to friends were made. More paint thinner was purchased.

PnP. Like lightening I taste cherries zipping across my palate followed by acid and menthol on the late finish. Could this be? No. A mere hour later when the paint thinner was all gone and all the chexmix had been eaten and all my friends had left (were they even really here??!) the wine was ok. Some cherry, some mint, some oak, nice acid, ok finish. Actually one of the better balanced wines ive had from Joe's in a while. But in the end, no spark and sizzle.*

Phish Show: 11/3/96 Gainesville Set I. Phoned it in?

Grew up in Florida. When I was 16, it was the hottest and most moist summer I can remember. The air was thick with humidity from sun-up, waiting to crack open into an early afternoon thunderstorm. While this made the moisture visible, there was no relief. As soon as the storm passed, the quick cooling gave way to a steam bath that made your skin sweat as soon as you exited any air conditioned area.

The stickiness of this wine recalls those days. The sweetness of being 16. The stickiness of that summer. Orange blossoms, raisins, honey, jasmine, syrup. Misspent dollars on cheap flea market colognes radiating unctuous sweetness in an effort to cover up the smoke on your clothing. Like the taste in your mouth after your first french kiss, there is a long finish. The viscosity of this wine makes you think that you could pour it on your mate like honey then lick it off. Unfortunately, its not real syrup and it pours like wine and most of it came off her immediately except for the part in her belly button, which was real tasty, but the rest was on the floor and made the first of several sticky messes.

Opened. Exercized some serious self restraint and control while I allowed this to open up for an hour before even having a taste.

Slick, shiny wine bursting with juicy flavor and deliciousness. Bright blueberry and blackberry sweetness is coupled with some very nice acidity..There is definitely a lick-um-aid plus warhead candiness to this wine.

Here in the E Village we are blessed with one of winters' finest offerings. The covering of our finer female specimens' stems with spandex. These shiny yoga pant soldiers epitomize what this wine is all about. Youth, energy, sleekness, fun, sex (but not necessarily sensuality). The finish keeps on going like these nymphs are prone to do, but there is not the heat that you would expect from the alcohol (in the case of the wine) or the hours spent at Equinox gym (in terms of the pantaloon wearers). Additionally, you have no idea where these women are going. Will they age like Heidi Klum and be awesome and age well and be allmilfy and have her own show? Or, will she be more like Tara Reid/Lindsay Lohan and under 5 years undergo a transformation most foul as to sour your original tastes for them in a way that makes your desire seem unrecognizable.

DoubleDoc's recommendation: Drink now, enjoy. don't get married.

Phish Show Comparison: 2/28/03 Tweezer. Best Tweezer of the 2.0 Era. Fresh, new, polished. During this run I listened to this jam innumerable times. Now, not so much. Yet, for others, it's a benchmark of their Tweezer experience. Nice slick, nice funk, not sure about replay value, but enjoyable.

Pours magnificent purple in the glass. Violets, bacon, barnyard (very deucey), smoke, pepper, an old tin of bandaids. Wet slate.

Fruits are wonderful. Nice acidity, clean black and blue fruit flavors, and a long finish.

Wife outta town, I'm burning up lamb sausages on the grill. Want wine. Have wanted to try this for a while as I move through the Seghesio lineup in my cellar.

Decanted for 2 hours before drinking. Oh god this is good. You see this wine at school and you know that it has your number. You walk past its locker slowly and there she is, winking at you with her gorgeous eyes. She's so pretty that you are literally terrified to ask her out. This is not a problem as she asks you first. You spend all week planning your date. Dinner, movie, walk on the beach..You're excited.
When you go to pick her up, she tells you that she doesn't want to go anywhere and that you should just hang out at her house because her parents are away for the weekend. After what seems like an eternity of kissing, this Zin takes its time working on my pleasure zone, making solid eye contact the whole time in a girl next door way rather than "adult entertainer" way. Shy and smooth, with class to spare, but hedonism and lust and conviction none the less.

Deep black fruit. Some blueberry. Some baking spice, but I don't get a lot of pepper or heat. Cream. Leather. Ecstasy.

Violet, blueberry, oak. Light mouthfeel. Very little spice, earth, terroir, or character. I can see why some people like this wine. It certainly has a more austere take to it than your normal new world syrahs I really want at least a little more pepper/spice if the wine is not going to have a fruity juicyness to it.-I did not taste the licorice or other gamey flavors others picked up on.

This wine is like your boring banker cousin who invites you to all of these sophisticated events. You get to them and you eat caviar and drink free scotch and meet beautiful women who dress nicely. This is all a wonderful experience for these people and they talk about interest rates and country clubs and ladies look at you because they know that you are not one of them and they like this and for one moment you are special.

Seems cool, right? But then you realize the sad monotony of these men (and women's) existences and this makes you sad and you talk to the pretty lady and you go onto the roof with her and you talk to her about art and books and she stares at you vacuously until you grow weary. You finish your cigar and go home. In the cab you realized that you didn't eat anything all night so you go to arbys and suck mustard out of packets and get sick.

The next morning you wonder. I should have had a good time, but didn't. The only good part was arbys.

Wife-Tron ordered me to host a house party full of babies and their parents, so I convinced her to let me go get a case of wine as a consolation prize. I had told her to read page 72 of the new Cosmo magazine, but she told me that I could do whatever page 72 of Cosmo said to myself and to be lucky that I was at least going to get a good buzz out of the wine to numb the psychological pain that doing this would cause.

Popped this open about an hour before guests arrived to be served with pulled pork. This was a nice CDR. Lighter in mouthfeel, blue and black fruits, lamb fat, pepper, some stemminess there, but a welcome zip of green pepper is nice in this wine. Very light smoke. The hint of an old campfire from one campsite over. Not hot, good acidity, medium length finish.

I thought this was a pretty good value, but given what page 72 has in store for me, I should have gone for a high alcohol zin or maybe just grain alcohol.

Phish Show: This would be a summer 94 set one. Fun, basic, nothing too far out there, a great time. Your dad would be ok with this band if it weren't for all the weirdos around.

Poured into decanter and started drinking immediately (just try and stop me, wifey!), but drank over the course of the evening.

Leather, horse manure, funk, brined olives, and topsoil on the nose.
Flavor is similar to taking a giant spoonful of raspberry and black cherry jam and spreading it over a steak au poive. Deep umami mouthfeel..almost soysauce or mushrooms... long finish..balance is spectacular..this is a 13 year old Chinese gymnast at the Olympics.

If guy fieri and the maitre d' from Daniel NYC were both bitten by the same radioactive spider and also gained suits of iron and fought evil and also served wine, this would be said wine. Explosive flavor (Guy's "flavortown") meets old world sophistication, depth, and class (Daniel NYC).

I hate Guy Fieri, but that hair and all of the bracelets and everything. I mean that guy must know fine wine and food, right? Who could go wrong serving "Donkey sauce" to friends? But then I go to a place I see on the show by coincidence and alas, I too want to go and buy and 67 SS Camaro and drive it places and spike my hair and talk funny and perpetually wear sunglasses backwards on my head WTF? and stick my fat porcine fingers into the stockpots of innumerable diner waitresses.

Likewise, who wants to be the stuck-up, know-it-all, old guard of a maitre d' at Daniel? But then you see the way that he gracefully moves from table to table..a joke here, a smile, noting the gentlemen when needed but never forgetting the ladies. Always, always paying attention to the ladies. And you see the way that these older upper east siders look at him with suspicion and wonder and awe and desire.

Moral of the story is that guy and mr maitre d are two of the worlds greatest poonhounds and this wine is too. Pour this wine on your next date. If you dont succeed...you're doing it wrong.
