1993 Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT

SuperTuscan Blend more

7/27/2015 - NineteenEightyTwo Likes this wine: 92 points

Medium rosewood color. Gentle but varied nose of pomegranate, anise and tar. The palate starts slightly tart at the front of the mouth, transitioning to smooth black fruit flavors, underpinned by a subtle flavor of rocky soil. This requires somewhat quiet, contemplative enjoyment. The attentive taster will find this every bit as elegant as a mature Bordeaux, though perhaps in a more understated style. Another example of the excellence that Tignanello achieves with age, this may be enjoyed today without hesitation.

Light cardinal-amaranth color, slightly cloudy. This had a nose of tart red berries, herbs, and exotic spices. On the palate, this is light-bodied and elegant, with bright red fruit flavors and a touch of the limestone-infused clay soil underlying this area. Fairly acidic at this point, the wine can stand up to a variety of richer and spicier dishes. However, I'd be interested to taste this again in a few years once the acid recedes and more of the fruit and tertiary flavors emerge.

Accessed with Coravin. Medium ruby color with fuchsia glints. Nose of lavender, unripe plum and stone. The palate starts with tart red fruit, transitioning to an intensely acidic midpalate, finishing long with persistent minerality. I am regretting my decision (prompted by others' tasting notes) to try this- it is not at all resolved and requires at least five more years in the cellar. I'd counsel patience.

Opaque crimson color with garnet rim. Arresting nose of blackberry and bright herbs. Serious black fruit on the palate, with woodsy notes of tree bark and soil. This finishes slightly tart, with reasonably solid tannic structure remaining. To pick a nit: this had little of the austere, rocky terroir that I enjoy in Italian wines. However, it is generally well-made and balanced wine. Drinking nicely now, though this should hold on for 5-8 more years.

1982 Château Gloria

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/6/2015 - NineteenEightyTwo Likes this wine: 93 points

Medium-dark rosewood color with red brick hue. At first this has an intense nose of espresso and sous bois. The palate - by contrast - is initially quite subtle and linear, with faint blue fruit flavors easing into a smooth midpalate, ending with a tiny bite of woody tannin. Crestfallen, I assumed this was five to ten years past its prime. Once it was allowed to breathe a bit this wine really bloomed. The nose began to take on varied scents of rose petal, fresh tobacco, graphite and beef blood. The palate filled out, with flavors of black fruit and licorice, retaining the piquant finish of cedar wood at the back of the mouth. This is gentle but fascinating wine; not a transcendent experience but a pleasure to drink now or next year.

2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis

Napa Valley more

Bright ruby color. This is stereotypical young California Cabernet on both nose and palate. Vanilla and red fruit aromatics dominate the nose. This is very straightforward in the mouth, with abundant sweet fruit and ample oak, though little in the way of terroir or tertiary flavor development. Moderately tannic, not so much so that it prevents current consumption, nor that it demands long-term cellaring. This is my first experience with this producer, thus I am unable to comment on the long-term aging potential of this wine. For now it seems like a basic wine made in a crowd-pleasing style, inferior to others at this price point (Chappellet's Signature, Priest Ranch, and Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards spring immediately to mind).

Golden orange color. Entrancing nose of apples, fresh guava, and almonds. I could sit and sniff at this all night. The palate is clean yet persistent, with very subtle flavors of fruit and spice. This is my first Fine de Bourgogne (what a maiden voyage!) and I lack proper criteria on which to evaluate this, so I am tasting it in the framework of an Armagnac or a Calvados. I'd rather have this any day. Exuding beauty and elegance, this is lovely.

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): A medium-dark yellow-gold color with some orange glints. This had a nose of honey, bitter almonds and orange peel. On the palate, this was a rich but balanced mix of sweet and bitter flavors, coating the mouth and finishing long and smooth. Paired with a variety of fruits in a rum-based sauce, this was a perfect finish to a delicious meal.

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): Medium raspberry color, with a foamy pink mousse. This had a nose of cotton candy and ripe red berries. On the palate, this was all cloying sweetness, with only the faintest tartness on the finish. Paired with a rich dish of cheesecake and berries, this seemed like sugary overkill to me.

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): Beatiful light ruby/garnet color, appearing almost lumiscent at times. This deftly straddled the line between old world elegance and new world exuberance. Nose of ripe raspberries, baking spice and freshly-planed pine. On the palate, the succulent and juicy red fruit flavors were balanced with exotic herbal and spicy flavors, with the whole thing underpinned with firm, tart acidity. This can go another decade at least. Substituted (at my request) for some heavier California wines, this paired splendidly both with the pork belly with parsnip and black trumpet mushroom, as well as with the rabbit with morel and ramp.

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): Clear, with a faint yellow hue. This had an incredible nose- meaty smells, freshly cut flowers, and very pure saline all dancing together in an arresting aromatic melange. On the palate this is similarly full-bodied, but still crisp and clean on the finish. Paired with hamachi and shishito served on a pine branch skewer, this was simply delicious. My favorite wine of the flight.

5/28/2015 - NineteenEightyTwo Likes this wine: 90 points

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): A northern Italian Gewürztraminer- who knew? This had the color of mature white Burgundy, a beautiful medium-light gold. Both the nose and the palate had rich aromas and flavors of meyer lemon, almonds, and toast. This came off as oxidized, but in a delicious way. With elegant acidity, this stood up well to a rich Asian-flavored dish of eggplant, banana, cocoa and curry.

Paired with a mixed vegetable salad in a carrot dressing, along with a black truffle biscuit concoction that completely overwhelmed the wine.

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): Medium-light gold color. Ample mousse with pert effervescence throughout. This had a somewhat mute nose, with a faint aroma of toasted brioche. The palate was more full-bodied, with flavors of ripe stone fruit and crushed mint, all kept fresh by tingly bubbles and solid acidity. This has enough structure to age for another 10-15 years. Paired with surf clam soup, roasted sunchoke, mini cucumber sandwich and lilac salad.

Opaque crimson color. Subdued nose of graphite, tar and black fruit. The palate on this is also restrained, remaining quite primary. This had a somewhat bitter finish when first opened, though this dissipated with a little bit of aeration. The tannins are still tough, retaining a spicy bite. I had hoped that the Merlot would have made this accessible by its fifth birthday, but it is still wrapped up tight. Would be interested to revisit this in 5-10 years.

Accessed with Coravin. Medium-light garnet color with initial signs of bricking. Flabby nose of tomatoes and blackberries, with nary a wisp of tertiary aromas. On the palate this is also quite primary, with stone fruit flavors easing into a smooth, barely acidic finish. This wine tastes a bit like it is falling apart; perhaps the oddness of the vintage is to blame? In any case, this may have been an easy drinker in its youth but, based on this example, it is unlikely to inspire the type of decades-long fascination that makes Burgundy so enthralling.

Medium-light crimson color. This was underwhelming at first, with the nose seeming light and airy, and the palate coming across as thin and astringent. An hour or two after being opened, the nose had expanded to encompass a rich floral perfume with distinct notes of lavender. The palate also bloomed, with red fruit flavors being accented by a lick of licorice, though not much in the way of distinct terroir. The acidity on this was very firm, leaving the finish somewhat unbalanced. Overall, a nice village wine drinking well enough now.

Cloudy garnet color. Dazzling nose with smoky and flinty aromas, combined with the classic CVNE note of orange peel. The palate is similarly nuanced and multilayered, with the addition of spicy herbal flavors and dusty red fruit. With a bit of tannin remaining, I was surprised to find this lively and well-supported at age 30. Tasted against the 2001 Gran Reserva, this humble Cosecha outshone its noble sibling. Drink now, if you've any around.

Cloudy crimson color. With a bit of aeration, this developed an earthy and brambly nose. The palate had a good balance of red berries, an echo of the earthy nose, and additional stony notes. This has a mild but lingering acidity on the finish. Wonderful mature Burgundy, with all the elements in balance. I continue to be impressed with how well the 1990's are showing right now.

Opaque crimson color. Meaty Shiraz nose of roasted beef, accented by darker aromas of shoe polish, damp peat moss, and charcoal. The palate has an entry that is broad, fruity and smooth, with a slightly oily midpalate. This perks up on the back of the tongue, finishing with the flavor of tart blackberries accented by a spicy tannic bite and a final hint of fresh mint leaves. Mature, though still lively, this is drinking well now and should continue to do so for another three years. My first St. Henri; the good Lord willing, it won't be my last.

Medium-light garnet color. In comparison to the somewhat expressive 2011 Carignan from this producer, this wine was rather weak. Light, airy nose of red fruit and a hint of wood. This is a featherweight on the palate, being rather watery and without much discernible flavor or texture. I'd avoid having this again.
