PNP; deep garnet; deep complex nose of moist loam followed by dark red fruit and feral notes; moderate weight and acidity; initial impression is of earth with evolving dark red fruit and rich satisfying layers of meaty, woodsy pleasure with smooth tannins and a long finish. I struggle to describe exactly what I was enjoying. Purchased last year in a Paris wine shop. Wish there was more.

This bottle disappeared too quickly for me to get a handle on it. The sip that I did get carried the Ramey signature but not enough to judge in a note. Next time.

Amber with gold highlights; peach and honey nose; unusual blend of peach, honey, almond and butter elements with residual sugar, moderate acidity and some mineral aspects. I liked it colder where it stayed more refreshing. First experience (knowingly) with this grape as it is more often used in blending. We liked it.

Two bottles shared with thin cut charcoal grilled spiced rib eye. One bottle decanted, one opened an hour before serving and consumed over a couple days; Deep dark garnet with purple highlights; soft nose hints of dark fruit, light oak and some alcohol; medium plus body with low moderate acidity; very firm and moderately tight even after a decant and softened in the bottle over a couple of days. Even then, the flavor tended to be temperature sensitive almost from sip to sip; dark plum and blackberry fruit predominate, in fact the initial impression was more Bordeaux than CA. With time and warmth, I picked up some blueberry and lovely cassis notes, with cedar, leather, tobacco, coffee and a whiff of eucalyptus when it was fully warm on one occasion. Moderate to long length and fine integrated tannins. This was a fun wine to witness evolution but i feel strongly it needs another year or so. Very good but I'd be surprised if it became a star.

Initial tasting with short aeration; Deep red with purplish highlights; complex nose with red fruit, spice, wood and herbal notes; medium weight and avg acidity; disjointed profile on day one with oak competing with red fruit but some promising spice and fig components; came together over next day+ with dark red fruits, heavier weight, with nice complex, leather, spice, herbal elements, plenty of oak but overall very ponderous. Overoaked and overdone

Consumed a week ago so all from memory. Pale tan; effusive tropical nose of honey, melon, citrus and floral overtones; medium bodied, full palate of honey, pear, nectarine, melon, moderate residual sugar, very well balanced acidity and good length. 2013 was supposed to have been a difficult year but this was very good.

Slightly turbid garnet; red fruit nose with attractive forest floor component; exuberant first impression with bright red berry, forest floor, smooth mouthfeel, lightly spicy, very easy drinking. But the fruit was all forward, acidity was average, and tannins very light. Hollow mid palate. Second day, a different wine, darker with more intense spice-almost Syrah like. Had the wine delivered on its early promise, it would have been fabulous. It did not.

Pale coppery serum color, less vibrant in color than the last two vintages; obvious watermelon tinged lees suspended at the bottom of the bottle; soft yeasty melon nose; soft, earthy, melon palate with silky, softly full mouthfeel, saline notes, a little sweetness with persistent earthy pleasure. Acidity moderate with subtle minerality; Less verve, more sex in this vintage. Very good.

2011 Cooper Vineyards (Virginia) Coopertage

Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/10/2015 - Onthelees Likes this wine: NR

This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. I am not completely sure if all of these varietals are estate sourced but I have had barrel samples of Cooper's Petit Verdot and it was impressive. Garnet in color, nose of dark fruit, coffee and a little oak; palate starts with red fruit and evolves steadily through layers of moderate acidity, darker fruit and then firm mocha notes, a touch of cinnamon spice and fine integrated tannins and oak. Moderate length. Impression was steady over three days. You can locate the PV as the palate evolves. I found myself wishing for a little more body. On the scale of Virginia red wines this is very good and can stand on its own right.

Deep burgundy; the most appealing aspect of this wine is its lip smacking acidity which was truly mouthwatering; the nose showed prominent brandied cherry and herbs: the palate offers herbal elements, cherry and strawberry flavors which evolve through a spicy phase into the acidic, lightly tannic finish. Thin from a body perspective with average length. Less complex on day 2.

PNP and enjoyed over three days. Initially disappointing compared to our tasting, with a short disjointed profile but came into its own on the third day. Deep turbid ruby red; Shy nose largely reflecting alcohol which never appeared on the palate; initially intense black raspberry followed by a stern band of blackberry and smokiness which settles into a lingering tannic black cherry and rum cherry liqueur. Nice acidity and liquor like mouthfeel as well. Very approachable. This needs air if consumed now. We really enjoyed the experience of this wine

Sonoma County more

4/17/2015 - Onthelees Likes this wine: NR

Previous note lost in cyberspace apparently. Took a small risk and bought a case of this new vineyard Viognier from our favorite California viognier producer at a great price. A NV blend of '12 and '13 juice, the first apparently from the Sonoma Coast site. Served over Easter weekend, this was a hit. Crisp, peachy, complex and pretty well structured with good acidity and moderate length. Refreshing and paired well as an aperitif. Not the sophisticate Sanford and Benedict vineyard offering yet, but exceeded expectations

The second of two Easter reds paired with chargrilled rack of lamb with a savory rub and a pomegranate-orange syrup. This is the regular 2003 graduated from finishing school with Honors. Smooth but powerful, intense kirsch and garrigue as described by others with a full yet silky mouthfeel, rich and layered with much better disguised alcohol. All the edges honed smooth. What struck me was its sweetness, which might have been accentuated by the fruity syrup served with the lamb which contributed to its playing second fiddle to the Guigal Ampuis for all at the table. Wish I had another bottle for a more suitable pairing.

This was one of two great wines (the other a CdP) paired with rack of lamb chargrilled with a savory rub and a pomegranate-orange syrup (really good...see the Weber website). This wine was a stellar pairing. It's smoky meaty flavor harmonized perfectly and the dark fruit and licorice flavors complemented. Very very good and the better of the two wines per everyone at the table

3/29/2015 - Onthelees Likes this wine: 88 points

Was surprised to find a Pinot Blanc from Burgundy but read that it is not a true Pinot Blanc. Henri Gouges states that this is made from a Pinot Noir mutant that turned white. It's nose was very floral with a touch of honey; rounded pear, lychee and floral palate with generous mineral offering evolving into greener notes with discernable tannins. Long. A unique surprise.

PNP. Garrigue and burnt raspberry nose; full flavored palate of red fruits, especially raspberry with a spicy herbal undertone entering a dark, caramelized raspberry jam, anise and molasses phase which dominates the finish. Plenty of acidity and discrete tannins. First time with this wine. Will see how it evolves
