2011 Dylan's Ghost The Beast

Stags Leap District Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/19/2015 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

Black cherry and violet hued, Aaron Pott's stunning 2011 Dylan's Ghost The Beast is concentrated, inky and plush. The perfumed, literally intoxicating nose is an intense cornucopia of red & black fruits (blackberry, black cherry, red plum, pomegranate and raspberry) and flowers (violets, roses, and lilies). To the palate add baking spice, red clay, cocoa powder, red licorice, Cuban tobacco, nonpareils, and freshly-worked leather. Made from nearly equal parts Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petite Sirah, "The wine," as sommelier Charles Leung says, "screams Stags Leap District." Fruit-forward, with medium body, medium acid, and soft tannins. The only caveat is a shortish finish, which while not unpleasant, strikes me as a caution with regard to cellar worthiness. Also, in my experience, the wine did not improve with decanting. Nonetheless, I'm so glad I opened this (for my brother-in-law), and I look forward to opening another -- when I feel like wowing someone. 14.4% abv. Drink now!

2009 Château Angelique de Monbousquet

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/14/2015 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

An easy 90 pts., this 2nd tier from Chateau Monbousquet is on par with other right bank, grand cru class wines of the great '09 vintage from Saint-Emilion. My overall impression matches that of FAT LIPS (March 30, 2015), minus the bacon. I truly enjoyed this and found it to be a dense, complex, sensual and delicious blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, in a very nice drinking window. I thought it considerably more balanced than JOE THE CRITIC did, albeit, a couple years later. Pity, Angelique de Monbousquet is no longer being made. Evidently she is now blended into Esprit de Pavie. (Part of the Chateau was sold in February, 2013.) 14.0% abv. QPR+ Drink now.

2013 Wellington Vineyards Alicante Bouschet Noir de Noirs, Old vines

Sonoma Valley more

7/6/2015 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

Possibly best ever from here. I've been enjoying this "tooth-stainer" for nearly a decade, and the production has always been small. Opaque purple/black. Med. body with subtle black-fruit aromas that expand with airtime. More balanced and refined than previous vintages. Although very young, this is already quite impressive. Drank solo (without food) with friends last evening, and the bottle disappeared quickly. The palate showed beautiful blackberry, blueberry, cherry, mineral and earth tones. Med.+ acidity. Med.+ finish. I had intended to let this rest for a few more years . . . But it was thoroughly enjoyable, and has some new fans as a result. The 15.7% abv is not even noticeable. QPR. Drink or hold.

2007 Turchi Cabernet Sauvignon Block D Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard

Santa Barbara County more

6/6/2015 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

Ordinarily, I'm disdainful when a seller promotes a wine as a "case buy." What does that mean, anyway? Is it cheap, or is it of such high quality, or perchance, is it both? Well, in the case of the 2007 Turchi Block D Cab from the Santa Barbara Highlands, the QPR is so high that my mind instantly goes to the "buy a case" place. Presently available from two online retailers for $15, this wine is absolutely scrumptious! And, properly stored, it should have long life in the bottle. Cheers!

2010 Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro (Manzano) Syrah Cortona

more

3/22/2015 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

Decanted 90 mins. Dark ruby. Medium round and velvety, Luigi D'Alessandro's 2010 Borgo Syrah Cortona displays pure, concentrated aromas of berries, plums, mint, and violets. Blindfolded, I might mistake the bouquet for a Brunello. In the mouth however, I could just as easily mistake it for a northern Rhone, perhaps a Crozes Hermitage. Not a powerhouse, but elegant and balanced, with medium acidity and a long, clean, peppery finish. The tannins have smoothed noticeably from only a year ago. QPR+ Drink or hold. (13.5% abv)

2/6/2015 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

Crystal-clear black cherry. Med.+ body. Prominent blackberry, black cherry, cola, currant, and strawberry aromas. Secondary notes of licorice and burnished saddle. Glass coating, w/fine syrupy legs. Bright fruit flavors. Nice balance between buoyant acids and plush tannins. The '09 is richly textured. Cherry lozenge on the med.+ finish. Really needs to breathe (please decant) to be fully appreciated. 14.7% abv. Very nice. Drink or hold.

2009 Clos Pegase Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

12/19/2014 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

The saturated 2009 Clos Pegase simply demands to be noticed. Pure, undiluted blackfruit (berry and cherry) purple plum, violets, cocoa powder, graphite, and just the right touch of sweet cedar make for exquisite aromatic and tasting pleasure.

This is made in a lush style, with umami mouthfeel, bright acidity, and a lipsmacking finish. Its composition is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon (58% from Tenma Vineyard in Jericho Canyon, Calistoga, 38% from Graveyard Hill Vineyard in the Carneros) and 4% Petit Verdot from Dunaweal Vineyard across the street from the winery.

The '09 went through malolactic fermentation following harvest with indigenous bacteria and spent 17 months in French oak (58% new). 2744 cases were made. (14.7% abv.)

The iconic winery was sold in August 2013, and although Richard Sowalsky stayed on as winemaker, production is expected to increase under the new owners' (Vintage Wine Estates) guidance.

Originally $50 at the winery, the '09 briefly appeared on WTSO for $19.99.

Amazing wine, amazing value. Deep maroon. Medium to full-bodied. Rich texture. Blackfruit galore, boysenberry, cedar, cocoa powder, licorice, and tobac. Excellent balance of fruits and acids. Pleasantly chewy tannins. Merlot w/2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Robust: finished the remainder of a glass in the morning after it had been sitting out all night (that's how much I enjoyed it) and there was no noticeable deterioration. Will buy again (14.5% abv). 2007 Surh Luchtel Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

more

4/19/2014 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

I like MKMAST's short note from August 2011. Since then, the spiral is only upward. This is what I hope for when I see Sonoma Coast on a wine label, and methinks this one of the best examples of the vintage. Beautiful fruit and balance. Deep cranberry, medium weight, buoyant acidity, and not too heavy on the alcohol (13.9% abv). Lush, with a piquant mid-palate. Finishes delightfully long. Drink or hold.

2007 Clarbec Cabernet Sauvignon Glen Oaks Ranch Sonoma County

more

3/28/2014 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

Low yield, volcanic soil, and warm days contribute to a rich, medium-bodied, cranberry-colored cab with concentration and elegance. Fragrant aromas of black cherry, currant, and plum. To this the palate adds anise, cigar box, nutmeg, and vanilla (aged 20 months in French oak). Medium+ acidity and smooth tannins lead to an intense, dry, berry finish. (14.3% abv.) [175 cases] Drink or hold. Glen Oaks Ranch borders the entrance to Quarryhill Botanical Garden, a must visit when traveling to Sonoma.

2005 Clarendon Hills Grenache Old Vines Romas

more

3/9/2014 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

The '05 Clarendon Hills Old Vines Romas is a dense, red-purple, full-bodied celebration of all things vinous. On opening, the wine displayed perhaps the purest expression of blackberry aromas I've ever encountered; I just wanted to inhale it forever. The integrated palate is an amalgam of blackberry, cherry, and raspberry, with background notes of cardamom, truffle and vanilla -- all exquisitely balanced. The mid-palate carries a youthful stream of refreshing acidity that leads to a long, tantalizing finish. 14.5% abv. Although not inexpensive, this wine is extraordinary, and worthy of enjoyment for many years to come.

Generally agree with TOPHER18's 2011 note. Lovely, feminine expression of Pommard and Dijon clones from the Four Winds Vineyard west of McMinnville (a really cool town). Opaque, dark-ruby with a rose-petal rim. Medium body with long, silhouetted legs. Delicate rose petal and amaranth aromatics. Tart cherry, cinnamon-raspberry palate. Medium acidity. Lithe but earthy finish. 12.5% abv.

2012 Azienda Agricola Reale Andrea Costa d'Amalfi Aliseo Reale Tramonti

White Blend more

1/11/2014 - buffyst Likes this wine: NR

From a small producer in the hills above the Amalfi Coast comes this exquisite blend of white varietals indigenous to the Campania. Aliseo, which translates as "the wind that brings fair weather," is 50% Biancolella, 40% Biancazita and 10% Pepella. The vines, between 70 and 120 years old, produce very low yields. To let the fruit express itself, the wine is made in a non-interventionist manner and fermented and aged in stainless steel. Inviting, pale sunlight, this medium-bodied blend infuses aromas and flavors of white flowers, melons, lemon zest, herbs and wet stones. Exceptional balance of acids and fruits. Clean and refreshing, the lengthy finish begs another glass. Although early in the year, this may be my Italian white wine discovery of 2014. 13% abv. QPR. 200 cases.
