Sweet blue and black fruits, new oak vanillin with some dough at the end. Palate is ultra smooth with medium tannins and shorter than usual finish. Still quite impressive and approachable at this point

Pretty nose but the rest was downhill. The wine, albeit enjoyable a, has harsh edges and the spices takes a front seat over the fruit. This is a year to find value in the higher echelons of Bordeaux, not in the smaller satellites.

Soft with notes of plum, cocoa, and some spices. This is an easy going Pomerol that has a more memorable name than reputation. However for the money it's not a bad choice

Reticent bouquet of dark fruits, cigar spices and some oxide. Palate has the same components with a high dose of new oak which is normally the case with this region. It's a well made wine but appears rather young and IMO just as good as any Alion but at almost double the price, 92-93

2003 Colgin IX Estate

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/16/2015 - farinas wrote: 92 points

Based on prior TNs, this wine appears to have some bottle variation. This one had beautiful dark red color with a pinch of brick. The bouquet was reticent with tightly packed dark fruits, pinch of unsmoked cigar, and some spices. Palate was a bit tight as well showing silkier tannins and the presence of oak. Well made wine, however not in the league that it's price suggests (at least for this bottle) 92-93

2005 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra

Nebbiolo more

Almost full body and more forward for a Barolo, this is a tannic beast that will probably kill another 10 years without a glitch. Darker fruits, menthol, oregano and new oak are the aromas it evokes. On the palate, some licorice, fresh cut rose petals, round yet thick tannins and some vanillin. Finishes medium and could pair great with a rich braised oxtail or short ribs. Always a consistent and well priced Barolo that packs a punch.

At La Chevre d'Or in Eze Côte d'Azur. Completely bricked color. Bouquet still offers vibrant fruit with tabac, hazelnuts, and old wooden barks. Palate is silky and on the lighter side as expected of this aged wine, with very light tannins. Finishes short medium with pleasant aromas of dried fruits, tobacco leaves, a touch dough. Excellent and quite alive for its age, one can always wait more years if stored impeccably.

Dinner in Old Nice. I should buy 2nd wines from top vintages all day long. This one is quite aromatic with solid Margaux fruit with subtle nuance of spices, palate a bit distorted

5/10/2015 - farinas wrote: 90 points

This wine although enjoyable appeared a bit tired and beginning to disassemble. Some dried fruit, ground espresso beans, a tinge of oak. The palate was very smooth as tannins have resolved with a shorter finish. For the price, one can find better.

I drank lots of Rose during my recent visit to the Côte d'Azur but I have to say that this Pibarnon was head and shoulders above the rest. Very focused in bouquet and flavors and balanced, this excelled in accompanying a bouillabaisse. Need to buy more before the summer.

At Le Patio restaurant in Nice. Medium body color a little fuller than most Burgundies. Exotic nose of fresh fruits, the darker cherry kind, with animalistic notes. The palate was a bit sharp and had a light feeling but overall the wine fared well with light dishes and fresh seafood.

After 36 hours in slow-ox in the cellar there are plenty of notes of ripe red currants, creosote, light touch of white pepper. Followed by a medium fleshy palate with some acidity and nice tannins. Quite nice for a second wine.

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/17/2015 - farinas Likes this wine: 93 points

This Mission is already mature and resolved to an point where the experience is very smooth. On the nose it exhibits lots of cedar, cigar humidor, red currants, and spices. The palate is smooth and correct with some tannins left behind to accentuate the lightly toasted fruits notes. Very good Mission, I can only imagine what a great vintage would taste like.

A gentleman's claret and ready to pour. This has tons of graphite, dark currants, white pepper spices. The structure has resolved but left behind and austere yet lean claret exuding serious matter. I'm enjoying it but it's not for those seeking layers of fruit pleasure.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Reticent subtle notes of wood chips, iron notes, brine, some smoke. Palate has mouthwatering acidity with subtle cherries in a oxide liqueur. Finish is a bit short but it wants to come out of its shell. Letting it decant, concentrated macerated cherries upon decanting.
Post 1hr decant, round tannins and minerality starts shining through, more of a medium finish now, bouquet still closed. After several hour decant the wine did not progress anymore, left me a bit disheartened about I came to expect out of this terroir. Bad bottle?

The highlight of a challenging day to say the least. The 2011 vintage has exceeded my expectations at this early stage and this Gloria is no exception. Bold and bursting with sweet fruit and graphite and muscular and fleshy palate of layered dark fruits. Enjoy 93+

The Rampolla is a pretty and well made wine. Bouquet has subtle creosote, spices, creosote, iron undercurrent, and pinch of maneur. On the palate it has fresh acidity and smooth tannins. If only this wine were priced a bit lower I would consider it a good QPR.

Medium to full color. Bouquet had effusive garrigues, with red raspberries and cherries that we're not overdone. Palate was smooth, silky with a backbone of acidity that ended in a spicy finish. Aristocratic in design but not over the top. Classy wine entering its maturity stage.

Decently made with a pretty color and pleasant bouquet on red fruits with hints of bell pepper in the back. The palate is a bit thin and out of sorts. Napa Merlot just doesn't impress me the same way as Right bank and Tuscany.
