2006 Tenuta Arnulfo Costa di Bussia Barolo Luigi Arnulfo

Nebbiolo more

Garnet color. Mostly tobacco leaf on the nose. Light weight, savory mix of tobacco, tar, and light cherry. Supple and easygoing with low acidity and tannins. Very nice wine that honestly is more at the level of generic Nebbiolo than Barolo. All of the elements are there but only average intensity and no sense of tension or excitement.

2007 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Mont

Chenin Blanc more

7/1/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Medium yellow. As has been the case before, just incredible purity and freshness of tropical and citrus fruit-blazing clarity of both the nose and palate. More honey than I had noticed, moderate sweetness, wonderful finish with deeply embedded acidity and minerality. Glossy, mouth coating Chenin Blanc feel. Absolutely delicious and still clearly on the upward slope.

2005 Rapet Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves

Pinot Noir more

Curiosity got the better of me, and I opened this 2005 Premier Cru. Medium colored center. Scents of reduction, black cherry, and anise. Not surprisingly, tight and nothing but structure right out of the bottle. Then over a few hours, dense, brambly red and blue fruit emerged with a sappy upfront feel and a surge of acidity, soot, and drying tannins at the end. This is a big, powerful wine for the Cote de Beaune, and it has plenty of material. Subtlety is not its strong suit. While it is not brutal now and there is pleasure to be had, let it sit for 7 to 10 more years to loosen and unlock it.

Second night-now some cooler mint aromatics and a lighter, more airy feel. Ah, some earth shows up as well-nice complexity. Only downside is a somewhat unexpected loss of fruit, although some low key red fruit does remain. I still read this as needing more aging, but maybe my time frame above was a bit too long.

2012 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont

Chenin Blanc more

6/29/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Yellow. Usual pear tones. Not a particularly austere or dry Sec; curiously, at once, only average acidity yet a sharp, grapefruit note at the end. Some soil on the finish as well. This lacks verve, concentration, and texture. Not a memorable result for this typically stellar cuvee.

Deep ruby center. Bright, ripe, red fruit aromas. Medium to full bodied. Lush, warm, slightly sweet entry of raspberries and fig but not overripe or syrupy since it has good acidity and an herbal streak at the back end. A friendly, fun, early drinking red.

1955 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Rioja Botellas de la Cosecha

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

6/27/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Yet Another 60th Birthday Dinner (The Hills of Northern California): Apparently, a limited, 2,500 bottle cuvee, so I'm unlikely to run into it again any time soon! The cork absolutely disintegrated, requiring salvage filtration; even a Durand would not have helped here. Despite this, amazingly deep color with only fading at the extreme edge-hard to believe that it is 60 years old. Wafting aroma of balsam wood and light VA. Medium body. A transient taste of sweet fruit, then tobacco, chocolate, some astringency imparted by the volatile acidity, and strongly mineral finish. Not the greatest old Rioja ever, but a showstopper in its vigor for what was presumably bottled as a humble crianza wine. I've had very good luck with pre-1970 Franco Espanolas bottlings. This was a worthy finish to a 60th birthday celebration.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

6/27/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Yet Another 60th Birthday Dinner (The Hills of Northern California): Medium ruby core with some lightening at the rim. Really wonderful nose of game and char. More substantial weight than Charmes often has. Tangy acidity, attractive mix of both black and red fruits and soil. Moderate tannins. I was very impressed by this bottle, which could have still used some time to fold in its tart, acidic core. Excellent.

Yet Another 60th Birthday Dinner (The Hills of Northern California): Half bottle. Light golden color. Soaring nose of utter refinement and complexity-honeyed, high tones, orange, apricot, and lord knows what else. Unbelievably fresh fruit, perfect weight, poise, balance, and length. If I seem at a loss to better describe individual components, it is only because everything is so beautifully tied together. Hardly the biggest, sweetest, or most concentrated example of Yquem, but absolutely stunning and the epitome of elegance. I'd imagine that from larger formats, it could easily remain at this lofty level for another 20 years. While I tend to prefer stickies from other regions, the acidity, (relative) lightness, and lift are tremendously inspiring here.

6/27/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Yet Another 60th Birthday Dinner (The Hills of Northern California): Medium yellow. Some ripe citrus juxtaposed against even more oyster shell and brothy notes. Rich but very well constituted with a convincing Chablis finish of firm acidity and minerality. From both of my experiences with this wine, I think Fevre hit a home run with this cuvee, which outpaces both the Dauvissat and Raveneau Clos in this weird, overly exotic vintage. None of those excesses could be found in this bottle.

Very sound light yellow. Some but not much varietal character on the nose. Pretty dumb all around, tasting fairly bland and dilute at first. It took about 90 minutes to come around and show more expected citrus, texture, and chalkiness, but it had nowhere near the level of intensity and driving minerality of previous bottles. No discrete flaws, just a very disappointing bottle.

Primary medium ruby color. Expressive nose of candied blackberry. Very elegant weight for a 2009. No heat or overripeness, pure black/red fruit with nice herbal/olive complexity. Supple despite ripe tannins. Superb bottle that will improve with another 2 to 4 years of bottle age.

Same color as the Ile Feray but more subdued nose. Also medium weight. Some floral notes come up in the back of the mouth. The fruit is also pretty muted. Not as impressive as the 2012 when it first landed. I'd like to give this another try after it's settled down.

Yellow. Lots of sulfur to start, but this largely receded. Medium weight, glorious texture so typical of these wines. Ripe lemon, toasty oak, excellent acidity for the vintage, and excellent length. Proper white Burgundy that is very tasty. It is only limited by its vintage specific rounder character with less minerality and detail. I'd say that this is fully enjoyable now with limited upside potential.

2004 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Bosconia

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

6/23/2015 - drwine2001 wrote: NR

Medium center, garnet edge. At first, I got nothing but astringent, pine resin and a thin, pickle barrel taste. After a few hours in the decanter, the wood backed off and it did develop more flesh, medicinal black cherry fruit, vanilla, and even a touch of chocolate. That said, I still found the wood and the acidity to be too aggressive on the back end. This is very, very young Bosconia, but given these real concerns about the balance, I'm not inclined to lay away bottles and bet on its achieving more satisfying equilibrium down the road. Very different impression than the '94 Tondonia left the other night.
