NV Montana (Brancott Estate) Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

Hawkes Bay Merlot Blend, Merlot more

7/29/2015 - evanqian wrote: 80 points

medium garnet, pink rim, clear. pleasant fruity sweet palate, diluted in middle with slight oak touching, short finish. a little bitter from coarse tannin, and a little hot from standing out (NOT outstanding) alcohol.

fair quality under the price tag @NZ$8, last bottle in a case, won't try again, fairly enough. However, I appreciate those mass (but still well) producing commercial wines, which guard NZ local market, bar low-end Euro wines away, consolidate NZ wine industry.

M+ depth red. Nice five-spices, a lot earth and farm barn, eased after staying in glass for a while, then subtle violet emerged. M+ acidity, light/medium tannins, some oak. light but fine texture, lovely North rhone style. Need air, need food, keep turning in glass, savoury finish, good complexity as an entry level CdR.

m+ depth red/purple. some dark fruits and purple floral with pepper in nose, a little shy. fruity, earthy and meaty in mouth, soy sauce, not very clean, light tannins, light/medium bodied, multiple layers, very short finish. need stronger acidity to balance the structure.

an easy drinking with quite rough texture, however, I like its fruity and savoury sides. traditional Barossa S/G blend with Touriga as interesting part, and adventurously unoaked. the brand is currently owned by Lion Group.

Dark garnet, clear. moderate style, the oak flavour eased so it's generally milder than one year ago. cassis and cedar, mellowed well, grainy tannins, nicely firm acidity, medium+ bodied. Subtle herbals, medium finish with vanilla and chocolate hints.

an upfront red with medium structure, tastes still youthful and energetic, well developed and approaching peak, however, can cellar another 5 years.

2008 Rosemount Estate Syrah Balmoral

McLaren Vale more

7/12/2015 - evanqian Likes this wine: 94 points

impenetrable deep dark carmine, inky, still youth looking. moderate nose (compare to mouth-feeling), dark fruits and cedar. intense opulent flavours, very well integrated fruity (jammy, dark plum) and cedar notes (mild oak, a little mint and herbal hints); fine grained tannins, still firm; very smooth texture, velvety; some warm and strength in the core with dark chocolate and cream notes. medium finish with vanilla and cream (both from new French and American barrels).

Amazing density, good structure with fruits and oak dimensions. a stunning Syrah from McLaren Vale, really big wine, though I expect more solid acidity to support the heavy body better, feel slightly flabby with the 2nd glass.

Alc 14.5%, enjoyable now, still have 3-5+ years to its peak. JH 94, JO 92, HH 85, Decanter 2011 Regional Trophy

light green/lemon hue, clear. citrus, nectarine, fresh, very subtle wood. Vibrant acidity, medium+ bodied, slight sweetness and nice mineral notes in finish, good length.

milder, more complex and elegant than Brancott standard S.B., however it's still a commercial style, though it uses 'Special Reserve' 'Fume Blanc' as name, sounds more serious. actually, it's not barrel matured like 2013. under new GI Act (could be released next year), I'm wondering if it can match the name 'Fume Blanc', which normally hints oak barrel matured, not just partially in this way.
