2011 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay more

Slight sulphur which dissipates. Elegant fruit and citrus on the nose and that distinctive resin and mint combination that seems present in many Ramonet wines. Concentrated fruit on the palate but it is held in check. There is excellent length and Grand Cru restraint.

This is like inhaling a slightly sulphur-tinged sherbet of lemon and chalk. A rigid mineral spine tightly wound with fruit. And after what seems an age, the tongue inexplicably receives a fresh squeeze of lemon by way of adieu.
Day 2: no change.
Bloody marvellous!

Black plum, Christmas cake spices and some leathery, funky notes. Plenty of energy on the palate. Rich, if unrefined, fruit and coffee flavours but a nice undercurrent of acid to carry the richness.

Lemon tinted. What a nose! White peach, a slight but agreeable mealy character, chalky minerally citrus and marzipan. On the palate medium bodied but beautifully proportioned. A rich fruit feel to accompany that minerality then a lengthy citrus finish and acid lift.

Fruit and salinity combine on the nose. A slight earthy mushroom note accompanying the rich lemony orchard fruit component, before the salinity and acid complete the elegant picture.

Sous-bois, red berries and earth on the quite soigne nose. Berries and earth along with some tertiary characteristics on the savoury palate. No harsh tannins. Fully resolved and a very harmonious wine.

Floral, black cherry, earth. Dark fruited palate. Powerful with a noticeable dusty tannic finish. Rich and large scaled. A Volnay to reach for when you are half inclined to have a Pommard – although in fact the Santenots vineyards are down in Meursault rather than cosying up to Pommard turf.

Quite light in colour. Sweet red fruits and floral elements. Also some earth and sauvage character on the nose which is starting to show proper Musigny compexity. A sense of hidden, concentrated fruits in the medium framed body. Lovely intensity and finesse. Still very young.

Blood, smoky tapenade, red fruits. On the palate fruit and minerals intermingle with a savoury meaty character. The moderate acid and fine tannins create a firm but refined finish. Balanced. Very Chave. Great wine.

Cassis, plum, and leather combine on the nose. On the palate tobacco, cedar and mocha notes accompany the deep fruits. Full bodied with ripe round tannins. Everything is integrated in a mature package that, while not overly complex, is very satisfying.

Mid gold. Ripe citrus and yellow fruits on the nose, underscored by some nice minerality. Rich fruits and mouthfeel and that minerally thing building to a dry salty tang on the lengthy finish. Quite a distinctive and delicious wine. This is full of personality.

A beautiful bouquet of lifted florals and red-tending to dark-fruits with a few savoury components showing. Concentrated sweet fruit and structural elements on the palate. I didn’t encounter any imbalance with tough or astringent tannins which can be a feature with 2006s, just proper firm Grand Cru grip. Nothing over-played here. A lovely elegant Rousseau Beze with bags of life left.

Light golden with green tints. Citrus and honey with a touch of pepper. On the fullish palate some nice gras accompanying the grapefruit, sea shells and minerals. Gently oaky on the finish which has quite sufficient acid. Delicious.

The nose when coaxed was an intense mix of black fruited liqueur and roses with vosne spice. The palate was tight and linear, pretty much closed for business but left no doubt that it was fully loaded. This wine is closed down for now but will be a star.

Deep fruited, earthy nose showing sweet oak. Fruit tending to the dark plummy spectrum. On the palate there is plenty of rich extract apparent to marry with the wood. The flavours lack a little precision at present but show good energy and vigour. Acid pops up on the finish. This has structure to age and will be interesting to follow.

Light straw colour, hints of green. Some sulphur on the nose but this blows off. Rich mealy, lactic nose with a bit of wood showing. Very rich, ripe fruit on the palate with pear and marzipan. Good body but also a nice lick of lemony acid to carry through the finish. Definite 2009 vintage character showing through and you wouldn’t call this reserved or complex, but what a lot of instant pleasure in a modestly priced parcel.

2010 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes

Poured into a decanter. Bright, clear ruby. Initially just wet stone, mineral and white pepper on the nose. Gradually red cherry, raspberry, cranberries emerge until there is a piercing melange of sweet red fruit and a ferrous minerality. Over a few hours the nose keeps gaining in intensity until it is almost absurdly holographic. Ditto the palate. Cool, crystalline primary fruit and minerality. Like rolling round the sweetest Chambolle perfume and some liquid rocks in your mouth. Refined tannins. Finishes with refreshing acid and a mineral lift. This is all about precision and elegance.

Deep, sumptuous white peach and orchard fruits saturate the palate, all poised on a fine citrus and mineral spine. Richness and tension. Like plunging into a green, limpid, refreshing rock pool and then being shot out down an adrenaline tinged rapid. Stunning wine.

Good deep garnet colour. A bit of stink at first and otherwise closed. After 2 hours earth, plums and a lovely haunting fruit quality on the nose. Earthy, rich fruit on the palate, nice cut from the acidity but not unbalanced. Elegant and complex, if not the last word in grip and intensity.

The nose is immediately rich with concentrated red fruits and spice. Balanced, full and textured on the palate with good length. The warm vintage character shows but there is no heaviness or over-ripeness here. It is all about primary flavours right now but this is drinking beautifully. No hint of closing down just yet.

A more refined nose than the 2009 with red fruits and minerality intermingling. The minerality is apparent again with a reserved fruit character on the elegant palate which has considerable length. Certainly leaner than the 2009 but the energy and transparency of the vintage show through. Very fine Chambolle and has plenty more to give.

(in barrel) Deep colour. Exquisite, intense aroma of rose petal, red and predominantly black fruits. A real sensation of concentrated fruit on the palate. No lack of backbone and acid either but the tannins are fine. Overall this carries the trademark Bertheau elegance and intensity. It will be a beauty and those of you lucky enough to have allocations or access to it are in for a treat (but you probably know that already).

Colour shows a fair bit of development. A nice developed nose with an amalgam of earth, minerality, a bit of pepper and plummy (bordering on pruney) fruits. Lovely velvety mid-palate and then the tannins announce themselves courtesy of the vintage. Drunk on its own the slightly drying effect of the tannins would be more noticeable, but with food delicious. No reason to hold further.
