Crisp, fresh, vibrant, and slightly spritzy/effervescent with a profile of strawberry, citrus/lime, and a unique/distinctive salty mineral characteristic.

2014 Red Car Rosé of Pinot Noir

Sonoma Coast more

12.7% alcohol. Aromatically, this is fresh, clean, soft, and airy with strawberry, melon, pink grapefruit, and floral notes. The palate offers up up a bit more intensity, body, acidity, verve, and redder fruit tones than the nose would seemingly suggest, with that pink grapefruit note repeating. Easy drinking, interesting, stylish, and delicious.

2007 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

5/17/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

14.3% alcohol. For a pinot, this pours noticeably deeper and darker in complexion. Aromatically, the wine offers up black and red cherry, raspberry, sandalwood, potpourri, and a rather pronounced oak derived coconut oil/vanilla bean quality that eventually blew off/integrated into the wine with about an hour of aeration. In the mouth, rich, concentrated, layered, and ripe with gobs of dark red fruits. Long, expansive, juicy, full, and slightly warming finish.

Juicy, smooth, and more medium than full bodied with purple and black fruited profile, along with a peppery spiciness. Very nice, and obviously a great value at ~$20, but following a bottle of 2009 Montafi Ranch from a couple of weeks ago, this came across as a bit simple and unassuming by comparison.

2012 Ceritas Pinot Noir Escarpa Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

5/10/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

12.9% alcohol. This needed about two hours to open up, but once it did it drank beautifully. Aromatically cool and controlled, if somewhat reserved/understated, with black cherry, currant, violet, spice, and soil/damp forest notes. In the mouth, modestly proportioned with a decidedly cool, dry, and tart complexion to the fruit. The acidity serves to give the fruit a redder, brighter tone, along with citrus top note. Gentle, caressing, moderate length finish.

12.9% alcohol. Texturally leaner/linear with a rather unique CA chard aromatic and flavor profile of citrus peel, lemon ice, saline/sea breeze, chalk, and minerals. For me, what impresses most about this wine is its laser like spine of acidity, which really gives the wine cut, energy, definition, and drive/thrust. For what it is worth, unlike some other CT notes, I did not pick up any overt creaminess or oak notes. Lovely wine.

2014 Charles Joguet Chinon Rosé

Cabernet Franc more

5/5/2015 - egh wrote: 89 points

My third bottle of 2014 Rosé in the past week or so. Compared to the two that preceded it (Commanderie de la Bargemone and Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières), this shows bigger proportions, a redder complexion to the fruit, and a drier orientation with a subtle spice/herbaceous quality lurking behind a core of maraschino cherry, light cranberry, and white flowers. Not surprisingly, like the other examples, this too comes across as crisp, fresh, fun, and approachable.

Red

2009 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Ranch

Russian River Valley more

4/29/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 95 points

15.3% alcohol. For my palate, this is in the upper echelon of Carlisle wines I have sampled to date. The bouquet is gorgeous - perfumed, soaring, and complex with boysenberry, black raspberry, blackberry compote, bramble, spice box, and violet pastille. A couple of recent CT notes identify a peach quality, which I would associate with the somewhat piercing quality on the upper register. As for the palate, it is every bit equal to the nose - juicy, ripe, full bodied, layered, and long with the darker fruit, spice, and violet notes repeating, along with a peach/citrus zest quality which adds a sense of lift. A profound zinfandel. Highly recommended.

Red

2010 Copain Pinot Noir Monument Tree

Anderson Valley more

4/26/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Copain's Monument Tree bottling seemingly has a reputation of being the most fruit driven in the winery's single vineyard portfolio, and the 2010 version certainly lends support to that perspective. With that said, the fruit - while plush, ripe, and forward - is also pretty, pure, controlled, and balanced, exuding a red cherry and raspberry character, along with a citrus zest note and a hint of clove/spice. The acidity lends a mouthwatering tang/twang to the palate, both driving and anchoring the moderate length finish. No shame in drinking this now. Popped, poured, and consumed the course of two hours at Meritage.

2001 Château Rieussec

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

Small (~2 oz pour) from a 1.5L format. This was poured pretty late in the evening, but fortunately I was still able to appreciate the wine's attributes and outstanding quality. Viscous, lavish, and rather unctuous with a nectar like profile of apricot, honey, marmalade, and caramel/vanilla bean. Love the interplay and balance between the acidity and sweetness. Long, penetrating finish. One of my wine highlights from Heyday's one year birthday/anniversary party.

Small (~2 oz) tasting pour. A real privilege to be able to try this wine. I preferred it to the Pegau 2007 Cuvée da Capo that preceded. Surprisingly plush and approachable with gobs of blackberry and blueberry fruit along with sweet spices and a maybe a cocoa/espresso bean quality. Long, powerful, penetrating, saturating finish. 95+ points. My WOTN from Heyday's one year birthday/anniversary party.

4/22/2015 - egh Likes this wine: 92 points

Small (~2 oz) tasting pour from a 9L(!) format. A real privilege to be able to try this wine. Bold, dense, explosive, primary, powerful, and packed with kirsch, licorice, and garrigue. If the the wine had not finished noticeably hot and a bit clumsy/disjointed, this would have been 94+ for me. Considering the large format (unsure about when it was opened, if/how long it was decanted, etc), and the wine's youthful character and rather massive proportions, perhaps the heat/alcohol will eventually integrate? One of my wine highlights from Heyday's one year birthday/anniversary party.

Predominately chardonnay, with a bit of roussanne to fill out the blend. An easy drinking, refreshing, yet interesting/unique sparkler with good vibrancy and mouthfeel, a hint of sweetness (off-dry?), and a yellow apple and pear profile. Unpretentious, fun, and an inspired pairing with a dish of roasted baby carrots with pickled ramps and sheep's milk dressing. One of my wine highlights from Heyday's one year birthday/anniversary party.

Considering the producer, vineyard, and price, an ultimately disappointing drinking experience. Medium bodied with a straightforward, somewhat restrained, and surprisingly maturing/mature profile of red fruit and exotic spice notes. Seemingly resolved with a truncated finish. Not obviously flawed (purchased on release from the winery, so provenance/storage is not an issue), just not very exciting, and not offering the complexity, dimensions, vibrancy, length, or distinctiveness of the better examples of this producer/vineyard combination. In the 87-88 point range for this bottle.

13.9% alcohol. Moderately proportioned, balanced, refined, and yet surprisingly juicy with notions of crushed dark berries, smoke, game, a subtle herbal/stem suggestion, and maybe a floral imprint in the aromatic. Drinking nicely now (give it at least an hour or so of aeration), but certainly no hurry.

To me the aromatic and flavor profile of this wine was at once both juicy/ripe and savory/rustic with licorice, black raspberry, violet pastille, spice box, and herbal/earthy notes. Lighter to medium bodied with good nerve/tension, and a smooth, moderate length finish. This drank beautifully over the 90 minutes it was consumed. Purchased off the list at Girl and the Goat.
