2012 Kumeu River Chardonnay Village

Superb for so many reasons. This is the equal of many a 1er cru Chablis but for less than £10 - crackling with energy, minerals, ripe fruit this coats the palate without ever feeling heavy or flabby. This estate really are turning out some incredible wines. This has that lemon-curd tang on the palate but with taut minerals crackling away on top. Good acidity, great value.

Ridiculously good value for a wine that is layered with quality all the way from the first sniff through to the deep, layered palate and long aftertaste. Flinty, with clotted cream aromas, buttermilk, lemons - but this is no glop-bomb, it has a zing and freshness to it that sits brilliantly on top of the fruit. Impressive now, will age. Very very impressive wine that would stand in for a very high quality white burgundy.

It is places like Givry, Marsannay, Mercury and the like that are providing shelter from the higher prices across the board in Burgundy, and that means exploring brilliant producers like Lumpp - this is already impressive with a firm, taut spine of iron, red fruits but a touch of development and depth. Plums, some orange peel and mineral-loaded palate - a definite keeper and very good value. Approachable now, will keep 10+ years easy.

The fruit is pretty-much up front and centre right now, all slutty and sweet but there is some very good quality lurking underneath. Lots of rich cherry and black fruit - but time in the decanter lets the sweetness back off a touch and the more rigid elements poke through. This is a lovely drink right now, if a little forward. I reckon this could be lovely in 5 years or so - I've stuck plenty away in the cellar.

Like smacking together two pieces of flint - minerals, stones, rain water. Green tinge, very mineral, sheer palate. I like it. The anti fruit bomb. A lot of sediment in the glass but a crunchy, angular wine that works well in summer. Probably a bit too spiky for some.

Fairly hollowed out middle of the road Bordeaux starting to show some age. Usually a pretty decent wine that hangs on well into its second decade but this one is a bit empty. Classical but lightweight - nevertheless, excellent value at £12. Gives up that classical Bordeaux palate before things were all dialled up to 11.

BOOM. Real chablis - taut, lean, mineral, slate but with some peach and lemon notes. Really good stuff for the price - classy wine. Our new house Chablis. If this is your bog standard house wine, then life is good.

Impressive, richer style of Muscadet with a softer, rounder feel - lots of nutmeg and a dash of tropical fruit and wet cotton sitting on top of seashells and fresh acidity. Impressive.

Jadot Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais (London): Signature black fruit and fine tannins - impressive depth for a stupid stupid low price - again, I would struggle to name Gamay as the grape - this is more pinot noir from Marsannay. £13 of utter "i am pretending this is £50 burgundy" pleasure.

Jadot Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais (London): I like it? I love it. Much more open than the 2006 Clos de Rochegrès from the same producer - deep black fruit with a compact cool fruit feel with very sweet tannins - very fine, confident with a feral under current. These Chateau des Jacques do somewhat challenge what is accepted as Beaujolais - in and of itself this is great wine. I'm drinking this as a £20 replacement for awesome Burgundy. Great stuff - still young, let it rest. Or drink the ass of it and buy more - you wont find this price/quality up the road in Cotes de Nuits.

Gamay more

5/31/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Jadot Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais (London): Very fine boned fruit and texture with the black fruit giving up a compact, cool feel - needs time in a decanter to open up the palate, but even then this is reserved. I like it - very nuanced, very Corton-like at time. This is a lot of wine for the money. Beaujolais disguised as extremely good Burgundy. The secondary characteristics are peeking out but this needs more time.

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Some Grand Crus are more equal than others - this bears that out with a pinched, clipped finish. Decent enough and showing some evolution from a couple of years back but this shows the limitations of the terroir in relation to other Grand Crus. Red fruit, cherry and funky little streak running through it - nice enough but there is a touch of drying tannin in here that adds some bitterness to the finish.

There is a LOT of potential here - and to be fair I'm not feeing too guilty about opening a bottle now. Time in the decanter really is required right now - 2hrs seems to do it - and brings out the firmer cherry notes. Layered, complex but quite rich at the moment. A lot of fat on the bones right now.

5/15/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Yes yes yes yes. Southern Rhone for sure, but the vintage has eased off the throttle a little and there is a good wine here with all that tangy, garrigue-laden palate layered across a red-fruit base. Loose knit with some olive tapanade and meat coming through - lots of black cherries and pepper. Really great stuff - approachable now and drinking well in its youth.

This is the Spinal Tap of gin.
Served in large bowled wine glass with ice and Fever Tree tonic.

Best served with half a small bottle of Fever Tree tonic and no fruit, this really lets the smooth, powerful junpier aromas to really shine. Brilliantly full and smooth with a touch of aniseed and milky soft.

Eschewing the usual fruit addition, my wife hit on the fantastic idea of dropping in crushed juniper berries. BOOM! Turn it up to 11.

Superb value, with a massive whack of terroir here. Lots of black fruits but layered over a soily, gritty, earthy base - it smells like damp soil and dirt and the touch of the winemaker. Great stuff.

A touch acidic at first, then stewed, then open......then 4 hours later a hint of musk and cork. Damn it - I thought it was a slightly dumb bottle until the cork taint crept out - by which point most of the wine had gone. A shame because the underlying ingredients are very impressive.

This is the perfect midweeker for next to nothing (7 meagre English pounds, m'Lord) that gives a nice little pinot hit without the Burgundy price tag. Very lean and clear and tight, but give this 2 hours of air and it starts to unfurl to reveal punch little cherry notes, dry soild and a firm spine of acidity - certainly the equal of a lot of Bourgogne level reds - perfect summer red. Excellent value.

I like this but would be really pushed to spot it as a Gamay - it has that Bourogone level Burgundy twang to it, but smoother (and better?). Is it a bad thing? Well, I'm getting a lovely Burg/Beaujolais zip going on for £10 so in my opinion it is not a bad thing. From a purist point of view I am not so sure. Lovely stuff though.

The more I drink 2007 Burgs the more I like them - this is bang on point - light, clear, refined but with a firmness that sits well with the taut fruit. Firm cherry stone and minerals sit well on top of the tannins and structure. Good to go now.

At last! A Latour that was not entirely shut down. This is quite stupendous - compact, linear, brooding with so much elegance compressed into a lithe frame. There is absolutely no fat on this, just taut black fruit with a rigid spine. Quite brilliant.

Still quite firm, showing some dense matter that needs time to resolve. Decanting very much required at the moment, which lets the aromatics come to the fore - a touch of raspberry juice, black fruit and some tangy minerals - a bit of a chalky note in there too. Slowly ageing - great value. Hold for now.

4/10/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

This is ROCKING right now - this has that Something-From-Nothing vibe going on, with the translucent liquid powering out some incredible aromas - BOOF. There are some cherries and some sweet-black fruit aromas - really treading a nice line between elegant and feral-funky-sweet-decaying nose. There is still quite a bit of fat on the bones here but it is all relative - the frame feels as though this should be feather light and dancing on the tongue. It must may get there - this is superb. 2007s are really clicking into place.

2009 Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon Pierre de Tuf

Cabernet Franc more

4/10/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

I was ready to write up about how this is quite angular and scratchy and needs more time, but after leaving half the bottle in the kitchen over night this has transformed into a different species altogether. This has depth of fruit with a liquorice-meets-green fruit tang layered ontop of lovely silky tannins. Some raspberry notes gives this a sweet and deft touch as well. Off the nose alone you would nail this as a Cab Franc heavy Bordeaux. But the palate - BOOF - now you are back in the Loire and it has a lovely clipped, fresh finish.

The previous night this was rather angular with pinched, clipped and harsh notes but a tickle of raspberry and showed a bit of promise.

Excellent, although does need both more time in cellar and time in a decanter.
