2010 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino

Sangiovese more

5/17/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

There is a LOT of potential here - and to be fair I'm not feeing too guilty about opening a bottle now. Time in the decanter really is required right now - 2hrs seems to do it - and brings out the firmer cherry notes. Layered, complex but quite rich at the moment. A lot of fat on the bones right now.

2013 Domaine des Pasquiers Gigondas

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

5/15/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Yes yes yes yes. Southern Rhone for sure, but the vintage has eased off the throttle a little and there is a good wine here with all that tangy, garrigue-laden palate layered across a red-fruit base. Loose knit with some olive tapanade and meat coming through - lots of black cherries and pepper. Really great stuff - approachable now and drinking well in its youth.

This is the Spinal Tap of gin.
Served in large bowled wine glass with ice and Fever Tree tonic.

Best served with half a small bottle of Fever Tree tonic and no fruit, this really lets the smooth, powerful junpier aromas to really shine. Brilliantly full and smooth with a touch of aniseed and milky soft.

Eschewing the usual fruit addition, my wife hit on the fantastic idea of dropping in crushed juniper berries. BOOM! Turn it up to 11.

2011 Domaine Coillot Marsannay Les Boivins

5/4/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Superb value, with a massive whack of terroir here. Lots of black fruits but layered over a soily, gritty, earthy base - it smells like damp soil and dirt and the touch of the winemaker. Great stuff.

A touch acidic at first, then stewed, then open......then 4 hours later a hint of musk and cork. Damn it - I thought it was a slightly dumb bottle until the cork taint crept out - by which point most of the wine had gone. A shame because the underlying ingredients are very impressive.

2013 Saint Verny Pinot Noir Vin de Pays du Puy de Dôme

more

4/30/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

This is the perfect midweeker for next to nothing (7 meagre English pounds, m'Lord) that gives a nice little pinot hit without the Burgundy price tag. Very lean and clear and tight, but give this 2 hours of air and it starts to unfurl to reveal punch little cherry notes, dry soild and a firm spine of acidity - certainly the equal of a lot of Bourgogne level reds - perfect summer red. Excellent value.

2010 Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent Château des Jacques

Gamay more

4/26/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

I like this but would be really pushed to spot it as a Gamay - it has that Bourogone level Burgundy twang to it, but smoother (and better?). Is it a bad thing? Well, I'm getting a lovely Burg/Beaujolais zip going on for £10 so in my opinion it is not a bad thing. From a purist point of view I am not so sure. Lovely stuff though.

The more I drink 2007 Burgs the more I like them - this is bang on point - light, clear, refined but with a firmness that sits well with the taut fruit. Firm cherry stone and minerals sit well on top of the tannins and structure. Good to go now.

1996 Château Latour Grand Vin

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/17/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

At last! A Latour that was not entirely shut down. This is quite stupendous - compact, linear, brooding with so much elegance compressed into a lithe frame. There is absolutely no fat on this, just taut black fruit with a rigid spine. Quite brilliant.

2009 Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon Les Blancs Manteaux

Cabernet Franc more

4/15/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Still quite firm, showing some dense matter that needs time to resolve. Decanting very much required at the moment, which lets the aromatics come to the fore - a touch of raspberry juice, black fruit and some tangy minerals - a bit of a chalky note in there too. Slowly ageing - great value. Hold for now.

4/10/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

This is ROCKING right now - this has that Something-From-Nothing vibe going on, with the translucent liquid powering out some incredible aromas - BOOF. There are some cherries and some sweet-black fruit aromas - really treading a nice line between elegant and feral-funky-sweet-decaying nose. There is still quite a bit of fat on the bones here but it is all relative - the frame feels as though this should be feather light and dancing on the tongue. It must may get there - this is superb. 2007s are really clicking into place.

2009 Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon Pierre de Tuf

Cabernet Franc more

4/10/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

I was ready to write up about how this is quite angular and scratchy and needs more time, but after leaving half the bottle in the kitchen over night this has transformed into a different species altogether. This has depth of fruit with a liquorice-meets-green fruit tang layered ontop of lovely silky tannins. Some raspberry notes gives this a sweet and deft touch as well. Off the nose alone you would nail this as a Cab Franc heavy Bordeaux. But the palate - BOOF - now you are back in the Loire and it has a lovely clipped, fresh finish.

The previous night this was rather angular with pinched, clipped and harsh notes but a tickle of raspberry and showed a bit of promise.

Excellent, although does need both more time in cellar and time in a decanter.

2008 Château Figeac

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/8/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Based on previous differing tasting notes on this wine (and subsequent discussion) I thought I'd give it a go. This was much darker and meatier and previous bottles - there is a lot of matter here that will take some time to come round. Black fruits smashed together with rock and minerals - taut but certainly not lean. A lot of blackness to this wine - broody with a touch of oak coming through. This will take quite some time to come round and really open up but I found it excellent and much deeper than expected. Good stuff.

This stuff is confidently striding into its drinking window now, much more open than ANY other bottle of ANY vintage of this wine I've ever had. Still slender and discrete, but now it has that extra dimension where the fruit and soil are coming through the structure. Fine boned, as always, with some darker cherry notes coming through. Really really beautiful right now and with years on it.

Well after 8 hours in a decanter this really plumped out - all those classic Nebbiolo notes with some richness coming through. years and years it will take to develop into some secondaries. Nice stuff already and if you have the patience, then decant 8 hours - if not, then decant the day before.

A beautiful, elegant, refined and delicate wine with a transparency that is pleasing on the eye and provides a wonderful, lacy mix of aromas and textures. Cherries, pomegranite, soil, brisk acidity - takes some time to get its boots on but after an hour this was starting to click into place. Cracking value. Lightweight, fine, very good.

Superb all the way - very linear and tightly packed with notes of iron fillings, black fruit, blood. A very clean and tight wine - beautifully balanced, not showy, more regal and refined. Shows its Grand Cru class here.

This is absolutely superb - straight out of the bottle this is all meaty hung game, sweet cherries, sous bois, mushrooms - feral and earthy. Great tang on the palate - some time brings out some coconut elements. The finish does fade off a bit but overall this is excellent.

This bottle was absolutely singing (of course it is the last one - it always happens like this) - a mash up of a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Bordeaux and Burgundy in places - this is all layer black fruits over garrigue with some spices and herbs and liquorice coming through.
These bottles can be a bit up and down, but if you get a good one then they are excellent.

2012 Leyda Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Las Brisas

Leyda Valley more

3/19/2015 - pjaines Does not like this wine: NR

A Pinot Noir for people who would prefer to be drinking new world Shiraz. Full throttle, heavy and sweet. I like the standard Leyda Pinot which is less full on and carries some personality. This wine, however, is just foot-to-the-floor fruit extraction. The result is, well, .... is it Shiraz or is it Pinot?

Now this is not what you expect - light colour and a reserved nose with some funk far off in the distance. Pretty red cherry fruit with strawberry - fine boned with some tarte elements and acidity sweeping up the palate. I like this - good value as well. It has a nice little bit of stink in there - simple on the finish at the moment, but it feels like something is lurking in there that needs a bit of time to come out. Very good.

Very pure and clear here - quite upfront and fruit driven but you can't doubt the quality. Ripe black fruit with bacon - Northern Rhone slapped over a Southern Rhone frame. £10....say that again....ten...quid. Bargain. Better than a lot (or most) of the Cotes du Rhone at the same price. A repeat purchase for me - a bit of a crowd pleaser with a touch of quality about it.
