2009 Domaine Pichard Madiran

Tannat Blend, Tannat more

2/7/2016 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Yup, this works. Lots of dark broody fruit, but there is a tingly spine of cool metal running through this that snaps it into an upright position - good posture, shoulders back, head straight. Can't ever have a madiran without tannins, and this has them but they are no ugly bruisers but rather more sophisticated. Your teeth will feel the tannins, but what you need to do is marry the wine up with some fatty casserole and you have yourself a perfect match. Excellent balance - a big wine, but not big like a sloppy new world fruit bomb - more big as in big and chiseled from rock.

Much more advanced than the 07 and 08, this shows a lot of softer plum and chocolate notes with a touch of green leaf. Nice balance, but it really needed a bit more grip for my palate. Decent enough and this has aged well. Probably on the down slope now. No rush to drink though.

Stonkingly good value as usual - the 2013 has a touch more freshness and zip than the 2012 - a nice little streak of acidity ontop of those deeper brioche and struck match notes. Excellent and insane quality for the price.

2007 Domaine Pichard Madiran

Tannat Blend, Tannat more

Needs a bit of time to open up - a touch soggy and flat at first. Air brings out the synergy of this Tannat-Cab Franc marriage of bliss - a touch of herbal tang, soil and cherry and grippy tannins. There are a lot of Madiran producers who try and flesh out and tame the Tannat with Merlot and the like, but Cab Franc just seems perfect to me - who wants a Madrian that tastes like a Toro or a Cali Cab? Get some grip in there and cook that duck and drink this.
Edit: 1 hour later this has really bloomed - grippy but with more lavender and dry soil notes. This REALLLY needs duck.

Exactly what duck needs - deep and dark wine but not a nasty tannic beast, this has a touch of grace underneath all that muscular fruit and tannins. Good balance - in truth I was hoping for more grip. Well made, balanced. Food wine. Isn't that what they should all be?

Loved this wine - showing quite a lot of maturity but in a pleasing way to my palate. Some would say borderline-shot, but of the 6 bottles consumed 5 were excellent - one on the edge. Lots of soupy, feral notes with a tangy cherry, meaty finish.

Absolutely bang on the money - has the depth of 2005 and the freshness the keep this an honest lunchtime claret. And it is classic claret - all balance, not showy. All the talk of the exalted wines from this region sometimes drowns out that great wines such as this can be snapped up for a relative bargain.

4 bottle over the last month - 1 was decent, but the rest are shot. Still drinkable, but better to get something with some life in it - over mature fruit and a saggy palate.

Bang on point - this has all that loose knit Sangiovese character oozing out - mid weight with enough maturity to bring out the tertiary aromas of tea leaf, cherries, mushroom and undergrowth. 30 minutes of air really kick this up a level. Excellent.

Now here is an interesting observation - this wine is already showing a touch of maturity/oxidation - not much, but enough to dull the minerality and the palate. This wine is sealed by cork, not Diam.
Compared to a St Aubin 2013 from Paul Pillot I had last week which showed zing and verve and depth this is flatter and more buttery.
I'd not leave these long if I had any in the cellar - and I'm much more inclined to buy whites from Burgundy sealed by Diam

A superb St Aubin and a fantastic white Burgundy that is infused head to toe with a tingling, vibrant freshness and minerality that has lift and poise. Very refined and never blowsy - a touch of richness for sure, but always always in control and never overdone.

2000 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chapelle-Chambertin

Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

1/15/2016 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

Always a lighter style of Grand Cru from this area, this pretty much sticks to type - quite feminine in style at first and a little disjointed. There is a sticky cherry and mushroom tang coming off the wine at first, but an hour later this has smartened up a bit into a tighter, more upright wine. Perfumed rather than muscular, there are some cooler black fruit notes and minerals flowing out of the wine. Better than expected - I've had some shockers from this producer/vineyard in the past - and if given a little time to open up is quite a decent drink. No rush to drink, but good to go now.

Is it Grand Cru quality? Not really - but the price I paid reflects that.

Nowhere as earthy as the 2011, this has that New Zealand soft pinot structure going on at first, with softer, darker fruit. I'm not sure it benefits this wine - the black tangy fruit works well when it is reigned back a bit and has a bit of bite on it. For now a decant is recommended, or better yet 2-3 years in the cellar. Still a good wine - but I'd seek out more crunchy vintages.

Cabernet Franc more

1/10/2016 - pjaines wrote: NR

This has really picked up some weight in the last year, and has a richer, plumper, more plummy palate - very rich for a Chinon. It still has that green Cab Franc tang which stops it being a bit of a flabby mess. Drinkable now, no doubt, but probably entering a grumpy stage, and lacks the sheen it had this time last year. Hold for now - there is certainly good material here.

Heavy - a lot of oak on this that is a long way from being ready to drink to my palate - very heavy with dense tannins and the vanilla all cranked up to 11. I would have hated to try this on release. Long life ahead - should be decent if the oak gets soaked up in the wine.

Losing some of its sheen now, leaving a bit of a hollowed out core - I like my wines mature, but I feel this is starting to fade and should be enjoyed while there is a bit of fruit left. Some green, grippy tannins in there and a touch of pencil shavings and red fruit. Decent enough but shows its 2nd wine status quite clearly.

2012 Château Recougne

Bordeaux Supérieur Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/21/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NR

An absolute belter of a Bordeaux Superieur - perfect right now with that whole "lunchtime claret" feel about it - strikes the perfect balance between not too much oak, not too austere, not too hot, not too green. Certainly for those who like restraint in their wine making. I'm on a bit of a Bordeaux Superieur phase of late and I'm getting more pleasure from these than the more exalted estates. Comes in at a whopping £7 - lovely little wine that compliments food rather than dominates it.

This one shifts around a little - at first quite drying, but over time opens up and puts on weight, before drying out a touch again. Very classical notes of grilled meats, a slight metallic twang on the palate - iron filings and orange. After an hour more rounded - very much Northern Rhone Syrah. Dry finish with the acidity keeping this on the tarte side. A food wine. Decent enough.

At £20 per bottle this is a steal - deep black fruits with cherries and minerals coming through - very much in the Pataille style, with a long, nuanced finish. Drink or hold - this will get better with more time but its going to be hard to resist. Some iron and blood coming through on the finish - what a great value Burg.

Drinking beautifully right now, showing calm but elegant fruit - a touch cooler than the 2009, this has a touch of green notes pushing through, but this drinks waaaaay above its humble Bourgogne level. A bit of air really gets this going, with black fruit, some coconut/vanilla notes peeking out - broad, deep and excellent value for money. I actually preferred this over the riper 2009

If there is a better Bourgogne rouge at this price (£14) then bring it to me now. This is sensationally good - approachable now with a broad palate of soft red fruit, undergrowth, mushroom, meat - feels beautifully loose knit with a cut of cherries and soil coming through. Excellent balance. No one has any right to expect pinot this good from Burgundy at this price, but somehow they've done it. I loved it when tasted En Primeur and love it even more now.
