Super chinon. Nose of bright crushed red fruit, maybe cranberries, with real depth and complexity in mouth and nose. Medium length. Good balance. Tannins are present but integrated. Dry but not noticeably acidic. Probably a 91-92 at first; lost some complexity and excitement after 30 minutes (but not tired). Has 5 years aching potential but excellent now.

might be the best plain Bourgognes I've had. A great purity of red fruit, slightly tart at first put putting on a little sweetness and weight after 2 hours. Good length. Extremely elegant - surely there is a fair amount of chambolle here? Puts many 1er crus to shame. Gorgeous now but should have the stuff for at least 3-5 years.

(This had been opened and aerated several hours prior, so notes may not be indicative.) At first seemed to have a fading, dusty nose but nice sweetness on palate. After an hour, built and opened up to be very pretty.

Very bretty at first, but improved. Tannins seemed slightly hard at first but softened. Light and elegant once the tannins faded. Think this will be better in 5 years.

Superb, but fairly closed at this point. Began opening up at the very end after 2 hours. Sweet fruit. I'd wait a long time before revisiting this.

Tighter than the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (and a bit overshadowed by it). Floral nose (honeysuckle). Elegant, feather light. Lots of potential but not approachable yet.

Wow! Simply superb, and surprisingly accessible now. The nose leaps out of the glass and grabs you. Very complex and layered aroma & palate -- palate-staining, long, full without being big. A bit of pineapple and caramel (there's oak but very well integrated already). So much potential.

Possibly a flawed bottle? Not obviously oxidiized, but seems flat, short, and lacking acidity. Didn't develop at all.

4/8/2015 - ccn Does not like this wine: 86 points

Northern Rhone tasting (London): The opposite of what I look for in a Cote Rotie. Super-ripe, forward, fleshy, hot, stewed fruits. Unbalanced -- lacks acidity or tannin structure to balance out the fruit. Doesn't have the stuff to age, either -- suspect this wine will fall apart over time. Some pleasure to be had for those who like big, phenolic, ripe wines -- not me.

2005 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie

4/8/2015 - ccn wrote: 88 points

Northern Rhone tasting (London): A very disappointing bottle (from my cellar, so I can't blame the storage conditions). I don't think the bottle was flawed in any technical way. The wine hasn't developed well since I last checked in -- the fruit is fading and there's beginning to be a very slight green, stemmy streak. It's still an interesting wine that's more on minerals and earth, but not showing any of the interesting Cote Rotie funk or meatiness, or the aromatic complexity that Jamet is capable of. To be fair, this wine suffered by comparison to some very big, ripe, open competitors. I'm going to check in in a year again and see if it was a bottle issue, or if the wine is on the decline, but if I had to judge by this bottle, I'd be worried about the potential.

4/8/2015 - ccn Likes this wine: 93 points

Northern Rhone tasting (London): I am not generally a fan of the LaLaLas -- more a Jamet kind of guy -- but if any wine is going to sell you on Guigal, it's this one. Wide open, ripe, fruity, funky, sweet, great length, big without being heavy or phenolic. A distinctly ripe wine but not unbalanced at all, or cloying. In a great place right now -- probably "pre-secondary" peak -- but has the stuff to age further.

2001 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle

Syrah more

4/8/2015 - ccn Likes this wine: 92 points

Northern Rhone tasting (London): In our northern rhone tasting, this was the most "burgundian" of the Hermitages, in the sense that it was relatively (ie, relative to the other wines, not in absolute terms) light, distinctly mineral, with well-integrated tannins, more on the nose than on fruit or power. Enjoyable already, it's somewhat reticent and will likely enter a better drinking window over the next 5 years.

4/8/2015 - ccn Likes this wine: 94 points

Northern Rhone tasting (London): This bottle was singing -- the wine of the tasting. (Thank you, Thomas!) Fully mature but not showing any signs of decline, the bottle was still holding up well 3.5 hours into the tasting. Funk, length, depth, delicacy and lightness ... what you want in a mature Cote Rotie. As Thomas said, with mature reds at this stage it's not always easy to distinguish claret, rhone, and burgundy -- but for me this was unmistakeably northern rhone.

4/8/2015 - ccn wrote: 92 points

Northern Rhone tasting (London): While in Cuilleron's modern style, which isn't my favorite, this was a very elegant wine. Medium concentration, good length, interesting flavor profile with apricots and honeysuckle but also some minerality. Seems like it will continue in a good place for a while. Quite expensive, though.

2004 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles

4/4/2015 - ccn wrote: 87 points

Hard wine to score as it mixes great qualities with significant defects. Worth noting that I've experienced a lot of bottle variation with 2004s and while there's no indication that this was an atypical bottle, I can't rule out that possibility.

Orangey rim.

Immediately upon opening: noticeable '2004' character to the nose (whether you call that coccinelle/ladybird/ladybug taint or pyrazine). This faded over 2 hours to be a minor note of complexity and not unpleasant

Wine was at first short with metallic elements both nose and mouth. After 15 minutes the wine was at its best - sweetness, light red fruits, good length. I would have scored it 82 at that point.

After 60 minutes the hard/ metallic element started creeping back in to ultimately dominate by which time we abandoned the wine.

It seems to be declining based on my TN from 4 years ago. This was my last bottle but if I had any more I'd drink up.

What a disappointing development in this wine -- I clearly called it wrong 6 years ago and should have drunk up my remaining bottles. Dark red fruits, brambly, even slightly bretty. Nose is of wild raspberries. Extremely fruity & forward, soft. No acidity to speak of, so flabby and flat within minutes. Lacks freshness. Some ripe (though very slightly tooth-furring) tannins at the end. Flavor profile rapidly develops towards raspberry compote / stewed raspberries. After 20-30 minutes, wine begins to fall apart, with the alcohol becoming very clear (a hot wine!) and separate from the rest of the flavours. Is there a tiny hint of gout de coccinelle (ladybird taint) at the end? We abandoned the wine at this point -- too flabby and alcoholic to drink. Perhaps a fan of new-world pinot would like this. Drink now and enjoy in the first 10 minutes.

Interesting to see how tasting notes from 2011 and prior reflect one thing, and more recent notes another.
