Medium expressive nose of round and ripe sweet red and black fruits, tree bark, dark spices and Gevrey earth. Excellent concentration, sweet ripe dark fruit driven palate impression, good acidity and nicely integrated tannins. Once again very concentrated style but pure. Not terribly complex but perfectly enjoyable. Still quite youthful and need another ten years of cellaring.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This is a wow wine for me. Very polished nose displaying perfectly ripe red fruits, cherries and a hint of raspberry, sweet spices, cinnamon and mineral. Medium concentration, quite precise and refined palate, fresh red fruit driven palate impression, good acidity and lovely long finish. Really a pleasant surprise. I am not too familiar with Montille. This is so exceptional I wonder what the 05 les Malconsorts Christianne is like. I highly recommend.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This is a pleasant surprise. Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe crunch red and black fruits, flowers, strong mineral presence, cremini mushroom and limestone. Excellent concentration, generous fresh crunch red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and long clean finish. This very youthful wine is very pure and mineral. It is really enjoyable but can still benefit at least ten more years of cellaring if you love sous bois like I do. Wonderful against some tough expensive competition.

Exceptional concentration, generous fresh dark fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long finish. This is a youthful big scale wine that still needs time. It is really impressive and reasonably ready to be enjoyable. Love to taste this in ten years.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This so beautifully demonstrates “An iron fist in a velvet glove”. Very precise nose displaying pure red fruits, raspberry essence and cherry, truffle, grilled meat, flowers and strong presence of mineral. Very good concentration, lean and precise, strong presence of mineral, just right amount of acidity, nicely integrated tannins and clean seamless finish. Quite youthful but more mineral than fruit driven. Very polished wine.

2005 Richard Manière Echezeaux

Echezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

5/22/2015 - dcwino wrote: 91 points

Ken told us that it was 2005. Served blind, my first guess was Faiveley clos des cortons as it displayed crushed red fruits and strong presence of tannins. He then told us Echezeaux so my guess was Forey. The nose displays ripe crunch red fruits, red cherries, licorice, mushroom, strong presence of mineral and red flowers. Excellent concentration, ripe red fruit driven palate impression, strong mineral presence, bright acidity, slightly coarse tannins and good mineral driven finish. This masculine wine is still very youthful. Not much finesse but pure and mineral. Need another ten years minimum.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Pop and pour, the fruit seems a bit too ripe and no stem note. With air, this is become incredible delicious. Beautiful opulent nose displaying sweet red and black fruits, now noticeable stem which as nice complexity, sap, caramel, Vosne spice and strong presence of mineral. Excellent concentration, opulent sweet blackberry driven palate impression, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and seamless lovely finish. Displaying perfect balance and harmony. Very youthful but perfectly enjoyable. This improved with air where the 02 didn’t.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This bottle is starting to browning at the rim. The nose starts with strong DRC stem note which need to a hint of green impression, sweet decadent red fruits, raspberry jam, flowers, a slight hint of soy and sweet Vosne spices. Medium concentration, lovely silky palate, mineral, ripe sweet red fruits, good acidity and finish. I initially liked it a lot but deducted a couple points towards to the end for not having vibrant energy. I wonder the stem inclusion was the right decision as the stem note is quite strong and a bit out of sync as the fruit concentration is not there. Further cellaring could help lessening the stem note but the wine seems to be close to the peak. If you enjoy the DRC stem note, you may enjoy this a bit more. DRC signature is quite strong and it is very enjoyable.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Not premoxed but very mature for a 2007 GC. Ripe yellow pit fruits, honey and mineral. Medium concentration, ripe yellow fruit, medium acidity and medium finish. It got fresher with air. Need a bit more freshness and precision. I have had great bottles from the 90s. Although I like the wine, poor QPR.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Incredibly youthful color with a hint of green. There is a hint of something off, TCA perhaps. Incredibly youthful nose displaying yellow fruits, lemon curd, smoke, oyster brine, honey and mineral. Perfectly balanced palate, beautiful cool yellow fruits and lovely long sweet finish. This closely resemble the 92 Leflaive Batard in that despite not showing much acidity, it magically maintain exceptional balance and precision. I noticed a hint of TCA in the beginning which bothered two other winos. If clean, I bet this would have been in the high 90s. It is interesting that one of Mr. FCLARITY’s bottle was also TCA tainted.

5/21/2015 - dcwino wrote: 94 points

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): One of those unicorn wine. Pop and pour, it feels like an intense version of the Clos des Mouches, deeply toned and mineral but pretty straightforward especially compare to the other wines in the flight. However with air, it really improves by gaining weight and mineral expression. Ripe deeply toned yellow pit fruits, lemon, slightly unripe yellow peach, mint, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, mineral and steely, sweet deep yellow fruit driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and lovely long mineral finish. Though not showing a lot of GC finesse, it displayed the perfect balance. Incredibly mineral wine. Started around 92 but ended up a couple points higher.

2002 Lucien Le Moine Montrachet

Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay more

5/21/2015 - dcwino wrote: 96 points

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Just like D’Yquem, there is something magical about Le Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet in that the wines display exceptional concentration and density without compromising freshness and concentration. The texture is to die for. Tightly coiled nose displaying intense yet cool yellow fruits, lemon, lemon curd, olive oil, mint, crushed white pepper, oyster shell and sesame/a hint of oak. Incredible concentration and density yet almost airy texture like a great D’Yquem, oil, perfect amount of acidity and very good but not great finish due to the oak clipping the finish a bit short. Hopefully another ten years of cellaring will further reduce the oak. This could have flirted with perfection if it wasn’t the oak.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Beautiful full body champagne that clearly expresses the Krug collection style, ie decadent sweet yellow fruits, exceptional concentration yet fresh and no noticeable oxidative note that Vintage Krug often shows. Lovely bright yellow color hints very fresh example. Expressive decadent sweet yellow fruits, golden delicious, lemon curd, light honey, ginger, a hint of brioche, smoke and limestone. Exceptional concentration, dense yet precise, decadent sweet yellow fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and lovely long sweet finish. Drinking exceptional well and perhaps at the peak but no need to hurry.

My dear friend, Mr. Francois Mauss, always tells me that CDP is a winter wine that goes well with game, except Rayas! This definitely would have shown better in winter with a game based stew, perhaps venison. This is at the second stage where the fruit has settled down and the tertiary notes are starting to emerge. Ripe dark fruit, dry black cherry, raisin, plum, black spices, licorice, leather, strong tobacco note and garrigue. Very good concentration, dry dark fruit driven palate impression, warm and noticeable tannins that is slightly dry/coarse. This seems to be in slightly awkward stage and a bit more tertiary notes will enhance overall expression. I would recommend cellaring for another five years and served with a hearty dish or a fat piece of grilled meat.

Ravenau is the go to producer to lift my spirit and make me happy. Unlike the last bottle which showed tropical fruits, this is once again very precise and lean. It is all about saline, lanoline, honey and mineral. The fruit is white and cool, mountain stream, wax, strong presence of mineral and honey. Very good concentration, mineral and saline, cool citrus fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and clean cool long finish. Not necessarily complex but just incredibly enjoyable.
