3/13/2021 - JuniorSamples wrote: 89 pointsSolid if unspectacular effort. Nose of cooked cherry and kind of earthy. Solid purple color and no bricking. Kind of a one-note palet. Red fruit and decent acidity. Not sure that it has any upward room for improvement. |

11/21/2020 - JuniorSamples wrote: 89 pointsSlowly drank it down over the last week, courtesy Coravin. Color was a dusty red, not too pale but clearly mature. Nose was a little musty but still had clear leather and plum. It was very soft but still had some red fruits, a little oak and cigar box to keep it interesting. I’d say it seemed a little past it’s prime so if I had another, I’d drink it soon. |

4/4/2020 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis is an excellent wine. Decanted about an hour and then drank over two days. Floral and cooked cherry nose and then red fruits, a little licorice and an earthy finish. Balanced and nicely integrating tannins. I plan to wait a couple of years before opening the next bottle but definitely drinking solidly now. |

12/31/2018 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 92 pointsDrinking very well. Popped and poured. Solid but translucent purple. Classic CDP notes of cooked cherries and earth on the nose and nice red fruits and kirsch on the palate. Low acidity and well integrated tannins. |

8/26/2017 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 94 pointsJust very enjoyable. Acidity has declined to a better place and tannins are resolving nicely. Opened and bottle decanted over a couple of hours. Had with grilled steaks. Not sure there's much room to improve from here, since the body seems to be as evolved as it can be. |

2/11/2017 - JuniorSamples wrote: 93 pointsDrank with grilled steaks. Opened and bottle decanted for an hour. Ruby colored with a little bricking. Aromatic, with cooked cherry and leather on the nose. Medium bodied. Cherries, plums, blackberries, spice on the palate. Not very tannic, and a little acidic, but not unpleasant. Solid finish. Drinking in a good place right now, but has at least another couple of years. |

1/29/2016 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 90 pointsNo detailed notes, but popped and poured. Very pleasant, solid tannins, red fruits and earthy on the palate. Medium to full bodied, with legs to cellar another 3-5 years. Retail priced in the mid to upper $40s, it's pushing the QVR a little, but a dependable wine for a nice meal. |

1/23/2016 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 92 pointsRemarkably youthful at 12 years. Solid garnet, with just a little bricking. Blackberries, cooked cherries, smoky on the nose. Dark fruits and earthy palate, good balance, solid tannins on the palate. This is an enjoyable wine, and seems capable of cellaring for another few years to let the tannins resolve and soften a bit more. |

2010 Twomey Merlot Napa Valleymore |
9/1/2015 - JuniorSamples wrote: 82 pointsPopped and poured, so maybe it gets better with more air time. Solid garnet color. Not a strong nose, faint blackberry. Somewhat astringent and raisiny on the palate, almost like there some fruit trying to bust through but just not getting there. It's not plonky or anything, just not a lot to commend it. Disappointing because I've enjoyed earlier vintages. |

7/20/2015 - JuniorSamples wrote: 94 pointsRed fruits dominate this wine, but in a very good way. Medium body, rich tannins, and a solid finish. Really a lovely wine. Much better than the bottle of this that I opened a year ago. I don't know if it will get better with more age; I will check back on it in a year. But there is nothing wrong with it right now so don't feel compelled to wait. |

5/14/2015 - JuniorSamples wrote: 89 pointsGood wine, though definitely showing some age. Decanted about half an hour. Solid garnet, no noticeable bricking. Graphite, plum and a little cigar box on the nose. Black cherry and gravel on the palate. Medium bodied, still some tannins. Ok finish. Got better as evening went on. Can't imagine that it will get much better. |

2006 Caymus Cabernet SauvignonNapa Valley more |
10/17/2014 - JuniorSamples wrote: 91 pointsDecanted 1/2 hour. Solid garnet, slightly lighter on the edges. Heavy red fruits on the nose, with a little cedar, very engaging. Fuller bodied than I expected, and tannins are still quite noticable on the palate; this must have been quite chewy on release. Smoky cherry, cigar box on the palate. Solid finish. Kinda simple but tasty. I'd guess you could count on a couple more years of solid performance, and would be better if tannins resolved more. One more bottle in my cellar, so I'll sit on it another 18 months or so. |

6/20/2014 - JuniorSamples wrote: 93 pointsFirst 2005 CDP I've opened from stash. After 20 minute decant, deep garnet in the glass. Aromatic nose, with cherries, licorice and coffee. Medium bodied. Cherry, spice and raspberry on the palate. Noticeable alcohol content and tannins not yet resolved at all, but still pleasant. Solid finish. |

12/31/2013 - JuniorSamples wrote: 86 pointsLooks nice in the glass, but I found it to be a little thin tasting for a CdP. Some red fruits on the palate and an ok finish save this from a lower grade but I'd drink up if you have them. |

12/19/2013 - JuniorSamples wrote: 93 pointsRich gold color. Pear tarts and honey on the nose. Mouthfeel is thick, unctuous. Pears, apple pie, sweet nuts on the palate. Low, low acidity. Very smooth and very tasty stuff. Still seems young. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

9/19/2013 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 89 pointsWorried when I opened it, since the cork broke during removal. After emergency oenoectomy, decanted for about an hour. Good, solid ruby color out of the bottle. Cedar, graphite, plum on the nose; about the same on the palate. Solid finish. Very sound right bank wine; seems like it has a few years to go. |

9/14/2013 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 92 pointsDrank with friends over old fashioned grilled ribeyes and baked potatoes. No detailed notes, but this went really fast around the table. Very lovely in the glass, with a balanced palate and long finish. Wished we had another bottle! |

2001 Paolo Scavino BaroloNebbiolo more |
8/2/2013 - JuniorSamples wrote: 88 pointsDrank from 375 ml bottle, so my results may be funky compared to full bottles. Cork in pristine shape. Strong chocolate and oak aroma on the pour. Translucent ruby color. Oak, menthol, chocolate, cherries on the nose. Kind of thin palate, a little acidic, but cherry predominates. Solid finish and medium body. A good wine, and I'm no Barolo expert, but there's little depth here. Would be surprised if this improved with more age, since I'm working with a 12 year old half bottle. |

2004 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valleymore |
7/19/2013 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 89 pointsBottle decanted about 45 minutes. Still dark colored; not inky, but opaque purple with no evident bricking. Oak, cassis and blue fruits on the nose. Plums and raspberries, and a little gravel, on the palate. Balanced acidity. Good stuff but I kept thinking this should be better for the price. Still has life to go before it peaks, I think. |

6/8/2013 - JuniorSamples wrote: 91 pointsDrank with steaks at home. Bottle decanted about 45 minutes. Translucent ruby in color. Vanilla, oak, plums, spice on the nose. Decidedly plum and cherry on the palate, a little thin/light bodied, but well-balanced. Fully resolved tannins. A nice, solid CdP that is probably as good as it is ever going to be. If I had another, I'd drink it now. |

2004 Joseph Phelps Cuvée d'HospiceCalifornia Red Blend more |
5/26/2013 - JuniorSamples Likes this wine: 91 pointsBought this on a lark five years ago, unsure of what kind of Rhone style Phelps might make. Decided it was time to open. Surprisingly youthful-looking on opening, solid purple in the glass. Initially had a very CdP like barnyard aroma, but that blew off fast. After about 30 minute decant (so I'm impatient), nose of cooked cherry and spice. Palate was also cherry with plum, earth and leather. A little bitter on the way down but a strong finish. Medium to medium-heavy body. Don't know what the percentage blend is, but Mourvèdre seems to predominate. I think this has several years left before it hits its stride; sorry I opened this now! Well, it's good so I'll enjoy it! |

2002 Caymus Cabernet SauvignonNapa Valley more |
10/14/2012 - JuniorSamples wrote: 92 pointsSurprisingly fresh and youthful, with loads of fruit still dominating the palate. It's not particularly subtle, but it's not overwhelming either, having achieved a good balance that is neither too tart nor too flabby. This is a very enjoyable wine right now, but I've got two more bottles that I will sit on for a couple more years to see if there's anyplace up to go. |
