Lots of unripe berries in here, not just acidic, but sour. Drinkable but needs food. This is party/pizza wine so drink up. Not an impressive showing from TJ.

Paso Robles Syrah Blend, Syrah more

I really like this one from nose to finish. It's very fruit-forward and has a pleasant level of perceived "sweetness" all around, though its bone dry. I like the black berry tones in front, tempered by some nice licorice and hints of dried beef. Mouth is rich, round and supple. Finish brings in some nice herbal characteristics, but the fruit keeps it's place front and center.

I can enjoy this on its own or with food. Good stuff and just gave it about 1 hour decant. Enjoy for several more years at it seems youthful.

2008 Charles Smith Syrah Royal City

Columbia Valley more

5/1/2015 - tp096255 Likes this wine: 91 points

Not getting all of the amazing features in my bottle...

The first thing I noticed is that the color is quite brick-ish, making it look like a 10-year-old wizzened CdP. The nose also smells like old, crushed leaves with some raspberry liqueur drizzled on them, then a little pepper cracked on top. The mouth is nice and rich, decent red fruits and a lot of garrigue. Then the garrigue takes over on the finish.

My first Royal City and I have to say I am not impressed. Perhaps something was wrong with this bottle, but it arrived in pristine shape and I cellared it perfectly until now.

This is prob the most accessible Lillian Syrah I've had. The nose hits a nice balance between berry liqueur and dried berries, licorice, herbs and smoke. The mouth is more black-fruit driven, which I enjoy, and then the finish picks up the structure again. It's tannic but velvety. I suspect it would go well with heavier foods, esp fatty ones. Is this 100% Syrah? It just has that pungent berry top-note that reminds me of ripe Grenache. Maybe they threw some in there.

Good stuff. Ready to go out of the bottle and gets a little better with about an hour decant. Drink from 2015 - 2020+.

5/1/2015 - tp096255 Likes this wine: 91 points

A bit heavy on the black pepper and smoke, but this would be good foil for grilled/fatty meats (ribeye, bbq ribs).

Alcohol is well under control, allowing the fruit and structure to duke it out on their own. The structure wins out right now and seems like it will keep winning over time, but it still has decent fruit.

Give it a few hour decant. Probably best enjoyed between 2016-2020.

3 years later and this is still a serious Merlot. I don't think it will improve any. It's on the oaky side still, but the tannins don't clamp down as much as I remember. Prob best with a grilled piece of meat and not just by itself.

2008 Buccella Merlot

5/1/2015 - tp096255 Likes this wine: 93 points

This has improved/integrated in the last two years. It's quite pleasurable to drink on its own. The tannins and acidity have tamed a bit and it's not quite such a beast. Still drinks young, but becoming more sexy and hitting its stride.

This is the second Coravin sample from this bottle in two months and its just nice juice. Ready to go now on pop-n-pour but benefits from at least an hour of decanting. Make sure to serve it a little on the cool side.

Prob has a good 5 years of life ahead of it.

2002 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard

Oakville more

5/1/2015 - tp096255 Likes this wine: 93 points

I'm not going to do a big old note on this one because it might be slightly flawed, not sure. This is the only bottle of this I have ever tasted and after 3 tastes via Coravin I come to the same conclusion that it's either too old or it has a little funk a-la-Bordeaux (esp in the nose).

It just doesn't smell, taste or finish like a typical Schrader. It's not bad, just not very inspiring. The 93 points is a little generous.

The nose has more funk than fruit, then the fruit tries to burst through on the palate only to disappear beneath the funky structure in the finish. It's a well-made wine but perhaps well past its prime. Drink it up if you have it.

Another hit from the same bottle using my Coravin. This thing is still going strong now over 3 months of accessing it. Same tasting note/score.

This wine is more intriguing and Schrader-like than the 2002 RBS (also rated by WA at 100).

Best Reva I've ever had! Wow this is supple, rich and expansive on the palate. So in balance everywhere, sip after sip, and it does not alter.

Some Revas have just been overwrought and imbalanced, like I was sucking the wine through a charcoal briquette. Not this time. This has all the fruit and structure in perfect balance. I'm being conservative with a 95, may go higher.

I agree with Niagara. I'm not getting all the hoopla either. I usually love RBS but I tried it over a few hours and it was good but not Schrader-good. It has the great aromas I always look for in the RBS but the palate and finish were lean and short compared to all other RBSs (or any other Schrader I've had over the past 7 years). I don't think time will help or hurt this much. Oh well, you can't hit home runs every time at bat.

---
COLOR: Deep ruby-garnet, translucent
NOTE: This is "all-up-in-yer-business" Schrader. Oh yeah. While the alcohol is present from nose to finish, this starts out with wonderful elements of blackberry compote, Saigon cinnamon, rosewood dust, grated nutmeg, saddle leather and bourbon vanilla. And this is the third time I've accessed this bottle via my Coravin! Such a wonderful device. I never talk much about "legs" because they only indicate alcohol. But when the legs have color that's a different story. That means there is a boatload of flavor dripping down the edge of that glass, and this has it in spades. The mouth is somewhat deceptive because the tannins are so sweet, pure and supple, but they are in full force and even at 12 years of age they still have some grip! I love the raspberry and blackberry fruit elements in the mouth, more of fresh fruit than preserved. Unusual for a Schrader and seems to indicate a higher level of acidity than I expected. It's really refreshing. It actually makes it more of a food wine than one to have on its own.
The finish is just as remarkable, with the black fruits taking over along with the baking spices. It does come across as mature, but not tired. I would not wait a moment longer to try this for fear it could head down hill any moment and its current glory lost forever.

Enjoy all you Schrader freaks! Good to be me today!

2010 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

3/2/2015 - tp096255 Likes this wine: 96 points

Yep, this is the real deal. Marc Estate Chards always seem to hew to the smoky, flinty side, but this one has fantastic balance. I'm not a big hazelnut guy, but the nose on this is just chock full of hazelnut, caramelized sugar, lemon curd and browned marshmallow. It's lovely. Not a hint of heat anywhere even though it's a very ripe wine. The mouth is opulent, rich, round and full of citrus. It is sweet with glycerin but fully dry and gratifying. I accessed this bottle three times prior in the last 4 months via my Coravin, so I think this proves you can at least get away with accessing up to 50 percent of a bottle over 4 month's time and not adversely affect the wine.

The finish is sublime and of the same character as the mouth of this wine. It's just a hint acidic, which makes it a good candidate for aging but actually costs it a point today.

Great juice.

COLOR: Opaque garnet with medium-garnet rim
NOTE: Just such a lovely specimen that so perfectly captures the essence of Cab Sauv. This is my third glass in as many days thanks to my Coravin. I just can't stop hitting this bottle! This Old Sparky is equally thought-provoking and pleasure-driven. Perfect nose of blackberry liqueur, Saigon cinnamon, leather, beef jerky, black pepper, all drizzled on hot cracked granite. That's always my best definition of a Schrader Cab and it has it in spades. There's a lot more going on in the nose, but I don't care. On to the mouth... Where there is just a beautiful opulence, a rhapsody of ripe black fruits, no heat, just clean, pure fruit pumping out every second. I might as well just lay down in the vineyard and suffocate myself in these magnificent berries. So good. And then the finish, oh my. Sweet, succulent, just a hint of drying tannins, but they are so ripe and resolved. The fruit just lingers and lingers for over a minute. No wonder why I can't stop worshiping this bottle with my Coravin. Like a moth to a flame. Sigh...

COLOR: Deep garnet with medium-garnet rim, translucent
NOTE: Lovely wine from one of my fav new producers. Sweet little Grenache berries just sing from the glass, full of pompous red berry fruit essences and baking spices. Mouth is rich, round and opulent, bringing sweet kirsch, raspberry liqueur, Saigon cinnamon, rosemary and leather. The finish is just a little hot, but full of the same red fruits and it lasts for 45+ seconds. This is great by itself but would go well with any grilled meats. 1/30/2015 - tp096255 Likes this wine: 90 points

Good Syrah-dominated wine, lots of blueberry liqueur throughout and a bit of brambly blackberry. Hints of garrigue in the mouth, then the finish gets a little wonky, somewhat bitter but not in a pleasant way, sort of green. Drinks best with a 2 hour decant and is ready to go right now, but have it with food so you don't get slammed by the angular aspects.

I used my Coravin to taste this 4 times since Sep 2014, and today I popped the cork. This Chard has underwhelmed on each occasion. Given its pedigree and professional ratings I expected a lot more. It's a decent chard to be sure, but it's full of matchstick from nose to finish, strong oak influence that always gets in the way of the fruit. It has nice glycerin, but that smoke just butts right back in. I rated it 90 points to start but went as high as 92. I had my friend try some and he was kind enough not to say anything negative, but he also didn't have anything positive to say. Bottle seems to be in fine shape.

If you want to try a real knockout Marcassin Chard, then try the 2008 Estate bottling. Now THAT is unreal stuff and what the legend is all about!

COLOR: Opaque ruby-purple with slightly lighter rim
NOTE: Yep, this is my wheelhouse from nose to finish. The nose is a bit hot with alcohol, but the deep blue/black fruit just shines through into the unctuous palate of kirsch, raspberry liqueur, garrigue, tar and tobacco. Such an ample and pleasure-driven wine, what a treat. Wish I had more. The finish just brings on more of the same, with a bit of a bias toward the structure (tobacco, tar, crushed leaves, garrigue). If I could get more of this at $70 I would.

Same as last Nov. And I Coravin'd this too at least once in between, but it's in fine shape right now.

The 2011 just has this beat. This wine is a little imbalanced with too much oak on the nose and palate. It's still much better than most Chard, but it's not the elegance I look for in a Lauren. It still has good acidity, but I suggest you drink these up if you have them. This is not a nice food Chard.
